Death By Wigan.
Opinion elsewhere is that said "sniped" PAOK player was actually fouled hard by Defoe and the ref missed the additional assistant calling said foul. (Said elsewhere opinion opines that Defoe should have been cautioned or sent off for the foul, in fact.)
The "electron baton" is actually a two part system. It's a key for his microphone to talk to the referee and basically a buzzer that sends a signal to the referee to get the referees attention.Yes, that's what the Guardian match report says (final paragraph). You can also see the video of the whole sequence on 101 Great Goals.
I suppose I buy that explanation, but why can't that 5th official get a flag or something, rather than the little electric baton he currently carries?

Giving the extra officials a flag is too distracting for a the referee when the wireless mics will suffice.
And the baton is the same thing the ARs use just with flag removed.
So, now will the English stop whining about their draws?
I feel bad for Ireland and Denmark.
It's not inconceivable, but that group is brutal. Holland and Germany are #2 and #3 in the world (after Spain, the FIFA rankings have Holland ahead and the ELO ratings have it the other way), and Portugal is #7/#8 depending on which system. The Danes aren't crap, certainly, and I think they have a better shot of advancing than Ireland, but that group is just terrible.Denmark actually does well in these tournaments...I'd look for them to pull off an upset.
