World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Tottenham just lost an equalizer at home against PAOK in one of the most shocking decisions I have ever seen (granted they shouldnt be down to PAOK at home, but bear with me):

-A Spurs corner results in a shot beating the keeper, but is cleared off the line.
-A PAOK player on the line goes down after being hit by a sniper at the top of the stands.
-Defoe scores, with the keeper and the player in cardiac arrest behind him.
-The goal is awarded, then taken away with no explanation.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Opinion elsewhere is that said "sniped" PAOK player was actually fouled hard by Defoe and the ref missed the additional assistant calling said foul. (Said elsewhere opinion opines that Defoe should have been cautioned or sent off for the foul, in fact.)

Yes, that's what the Guardian match report says (final paragraph). You can also see the video of the whole sequence on 101 Great Goals.

I suppose I buy that explanation, but why can't that 5th official get a flag or something, rather than the little electric baton he currently carries?

The "electron baton" is actually a two part system. It's a key for his microphone to talk to the referee and basically a buzzer that sends a signal to the referee to get the referees attention.

Giving the extra officials a flag is too distracting for a the referee when the wireless mics will suffice.

And the baton is the same thing the ARs use just with flag removed.

Yes, I know what the baton is and know about how it is tied in to the microphone.

I don't see how it would be too distracting for the referee. Is the assistant referee's flag too distracting?

Watching the situation today, I'd argue that the current system is nowhere near distracting enough. Play was allowed to continue for a good 10 seconds, and then there was mass confusion when the goal was disallowed. That's preferable, really?

So, now will the English stop whining about their draws?

I feel bad for Ireland and Denmark.

Denmark actually does well in these tournaments...I'd look for them to pull off an upset.

It's not inconceivable, but that group is brutal. Holland and Germany are #2 and #3 in the world (after Spain, the FIFA rankings have Holland ahead and the ELO ratings have it the other way), and Portugal is #7/#8 depending on which system. The Danes aren't crap, certainly, and I think they have a better shot of advancing than Ireland, but that group is just terrible.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Think England's group is tougher than it's being made out to be. Not nearly as death-y as group B, but if they get off to a bad start against France (very possible), they face close to must win games against Sweden and Ukraine (in basically a home game for Ukraine). Not to mention they'll be without Rooney for 2 of those games...

Edit: And a likely meeting with Spain/Italy in the knockouts.
