World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

He said racism wasn't an issue in soccer the other day. Then backtracked and said he didn't hear the question correctly.
As long as he keeps lining the right peoples' pockets, Sepp can get away with saying almost anything.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Well, I'm going to have to find a better source to explain the controversy because this story just leaves me confused.

Reading the reaction means nothing when you have idea what they're reacting to.

He essentially said racism was not a problem in soccer, and most outrageously, said if a player was abused he should just shake hands with the abuser, as part of the game.

In no way do I condone anything regarding racist comments but what I thought he meant was that if in the heat of battle somebody said something offensive, a handshake and an apology could sometimes resolve it. I understand what he meant but, that would be easier if it was just about your mother wearing combat boots.

He should be careful not to imply there is no difference between that and something racist.

I would suspect back in the day he would have been right...you call a guy something 'generic' because he plays for your rival, you shake hands after the game and make sure there is no bad blood.

You use racial insults and I don't think the handshake will suffice.

Challenge is, when does the league get involved? Every insult, only racial insults, what about country, religion, sexual orientation, hair length, speed, skill, salary, wife, personal problems, kids? Again, not condoning any of that...but is every one of those to be brought to the league to adjudicate? If not, where is the line? Is one racial comment worth 5 about somebody's wife having an affair or is it worth 3 about them being from a different country?

My perception is that there are a thousand insults a week and the league can't wade into each of them....so he is making the mistake of using this as an example of that...it is a third rail issue, never use those as examples.

You might be right about what he meant. The thing is, he's so far beyond the benefit of the doubt at this point. Not to mention, he literally opted for the "I have black friends" defense, and posted this picture:

As an absolute best case scenario, the man is a buffoon. But hey, he's our buffoon, right Sunil Gulati?

How does Sepp having a black friend prove that John Terry isn't racist scum?

We should have a caption competition for that picture.

Sepp is such a moron.

He should ask Mario Balotelli about Juventus.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Man City loses 197 million pounds last year. The number speaks for itself.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/nov/18/manchester-city-biggest-ever-loss

This is interesting:

Mansour made it clear when he took over that he would spend the fortunes necessary to make City successful, and since June 2010 he has personally poured a further £291m into the club. Added to the £500m Mansour invested up to May 31 2010, he has now spent an unprecedented £800m on the football club, to bankroll the expenditure on transfer fees and wages the club would otherwise not have been able to afford. All the money has gone in as equity, in new shares, making it permanent, not as loans.

Doesn't that mean that technically Man City didn't lose any money -- one UAE potentate has just dropped some pocket change from his personal fortune?

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

I guess it depends on how you define "lose money". They certainly did in the sense that they had massive operating expenses that weren't covered by their operating revenue, but they didn't take out bank loans to accomplish that (see Leeds). I wonder whether some of Mansour's personal investment was in the form of loans to the club that could potentially prove toxic to subsequent ownership. (For example, some of the money that al-Fayed has invested in Fulham has been in loans, though not nearly so much, and I think a lot of people expect that he will eventually just forgive those debts.)

Edit to add: £197M is currently about $311M. For comparison's sake, the combined operating expenses of all 18 MLS teams are in the ballpark of $256M. (source)

He should ask Mario Balotelli about Juventus.

A better approach might be: "Soccer doesn't have racism, the world does. That soccer is the world's game and mixes players of all walks of life is a strength. If some use that strength as an opportunity to express their racist feelings, it is not the fault of soccer and soccer should not be blamed. That being said, soccer has spent many years speaking out against racism and will continue to everything it can to promote harmony among soccer fans, teams and players around the world. A person that cannot view other fans or players as equals is not a soccer fan nor soccer player and we should not allow them to tarnish our great game, our great competitors or our great fans with their bigotry."

Sepp, remember this, in order...think, then speak. Repeat it with me, think, then speak. Again.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

I enjoyed this line from the City financial report:
The loss for the financial year was £197,491,000 (2010: £121,300,000). The Directors do not propose a
dividend.

Still, not at all worried really.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Taylor Twellman has been a riot on the MLS Cup pregame.

Max Bretos: "I'm sitting next to some guys who know about MLS Cup. 2002 winner Alexi Lalas, a winner with 3 different teams Alejandro Moreno, and..."

"Oh yeah! Thanks!"

Predicting a winner: "I lost 2 MLS Cups to both these teams! I want a 0-0 game with 17 OTs and then have them call the game and no champion! I hate these teams!"

Gotta give him points for honesty! It's very refreshing. Hope ESPN thinks the same.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

So LA wins MLS Cup 1-0, Donovan scores the only goal, and all ESPN wanted to talk about was Beckham. Ugh.

Anyway, somebody is finally closing in on DC, LA is now almost .500 in MLS Cup Finals, and Houston actually lost something. Weirdest sight though? Phil Anschutz actually make a public appearance to help accept the trophy with his name on it.

Finally we can look forward to next season. Montreal comes in, meaning an unbalanced schedule and plenty of players saying "you're leaving me unprotected?" tomorrow.
