Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue
He essentially said racism was not a problem in soccer, and most outrageously, said if a player was abused he should just shake hands with the abuser, as part of the game.
In no way do I condone anything regarding racist comments but what I thought he meant was that if in the heat of battle somebody said something offensive, a handshake and an apology could sometimes resolve it. I understand what he meant but, that would be easier if it was just about your mother wearing combat boots.
He should be careful not to imply there is no difference between that and something racist.
I would suspect back in the day he would have been right...you call a guy something 'generic' because he plays for your rival, you shake hands after the game and make sure there is no bad blood.
You use racial insults and I don't think the handshake will suffice.
Challenge is, when does the league get involved? Every insult, only racial insults, what about country, religion, sexual orientation, hair length, speed, skill, salary, wife, personal problems, kids? Again, not condoning any of that...but is every one of those to be brought to the league to adjudicate? If not, where is the line? Is one racial comment worth 5 about somebody's wife having an affair or is it worth 3 about them being from a different country?
My perception is that there are a thousand insults a week and the league can't wade into each of them....so he is making the mistake of using this as an example of that...it is a third rail issue, never use those as examples.
