World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Wow, I know we can't defend, but that was horrific even for our standards. 3-2 now.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Is that scoreline correct or is it a replay of City and QPR?

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

US Soccer really need to update the data in their match tracker; today was Bocanegra's 100th cap, but if you roll over his name in our lineup it says he has 85 (and everyone else's data is similarly out of date).

I think everyone already knew that the US Soccer fed was pretty out of date in general, not just their web site(s). :D

In general, sure, but come on, wouldn't you expect that to be something they could handle?

Also: forgive me if this has already been discussed, but how about the flood of German-American players into the national team picture over the past year or two? Jermaine Jones is certainly the most obvious since he played for the senior German team in a couple of friendlies, but Fabian Johnson and Daniel Williams have now been capped for the US after playing for Germany at youth levels, plus Timmy Chandler and David Yelldell, and Alfredo Morales may be choosing the US over Germany and Peru. Are they all just guys who aren't good enough to play for Germany, or do we have some real young talent here?

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Chandler might very well be good enough to play for Germany—he'd have competition at the position, but I don't think there's anybody who would be shoe-in starter. Apparently, he had some sort of falling out with their youth setup a few years back, and that's one reason why he hasn't seriously considered switching to them.

Yelldell is, I think, just roster filler.

Ireland, Croatia and the Czech Republic advance to Euro 2012. Portugal on their way with a 2-0 lead at home to Bosnia.

Happy to see Ireland qualify for a major tournament after what happened against France. Now, I'm hoping they're in the same group...is that possible?

Not for the Revs.

Just throwing this out there, but Mike Burns is my cousin. I know a lot of people probably have their opinions of him as a player and an executive, but I'm really hoping he turns the Revs back into a perennial contender. He recently got promoted and Heaps is now in place. It's put up or shut up time for Mike.

Depends on the seeding of the teams. UEFA will want to either keep them far apart or draw them together. It will be interesting to see what shakes out.

I meant it more from the coaching perspective. Why would current college coach want to coach at New England? A team whose organization has shown very little regard for wanting to compete in MLS lately.

Nope. 1 team from each pot.

Pot 1:
Ukraine
Poland
Spain
Netherlands

Pot 2:
Germany
Italy
England
Russia

Pot 3:
Croatia
Greece
Portugal
Sweden

Pot 4:
Denmark
France
Czech Republic
Ireland

Could be some very strong groups. Ireland and England being drawn together would be fun.

To be honest, I don't follow MLS that closely. Maybe with the slight shuffling of the deck and a new coach they can turn it around. When you say they really haven't cared about competing lately, have they done things differently from when they had great teams? Or do you think they stumbled upon those good teams?

Only 16? Thought they were expanding? Or is that the next time around?

Yup, this is the last European Championship with 16 teams. 24 next time in France in 2016. Judging by the results of the playoffs this time around, that might be scraping the bottom of the barrel.

MLS has changed a lot since about 2007 or 2008 with the advent of the Designated Player rule and the expansion teams with a change of the way teams market themselves. The term I've seen used is MLS 2.0 vs MLS 1.0. And the Revs have been left behind for the most part. The Revs did a good of drafting well and having a solid core of players. But guys like Twellman got old and injured, guys like Dempsey got sold and the team was broken up. When it came time to replace them, they did like before and drafted and signed role players for cheap. Well when that happened, the league had changed, the DP rule came, the international player limit changed, and the Revs didn't. And their management and ownership has shown no signs of changing their thinking. As a coach, why would you want to coach for a team that thinks its 2006 when it's gonna be 2012?

I dunno... I mean, yeah, Estonia aren't great but they beat out Serbia and Slovenia (both of which didn't embarrass themselves in the last World Cup) to finish second in their group, and while Bosnia and Turkey didn't have great playoffs they're both solid teams. Plus you've got the aforementioned Serbia and Slovenia, and some other nations with some pretty good talent like Belgium and Switzerland and Norway all on the outside looking in. I think you could come up with a 24 team field without any teams that would embarrass themselves.

And Scotland will still find a way not to make it in. :D

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Fantastic story about how Ireland fan Conor Cunningham snuck into the Estonia-Ireland playoff match by pretending to be a member of the Estonian training staff.

Watching Sky Sports. Did Sepp just step in it?
