World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

For next year...

A 34-game unbalanced schedule. Top 5 teams from each conference make the playoffs. Two legged semis and conference finals. Higher seed hosts MLS Cup.

I like all of those changes, particularly the last two, though it could throw up a headache or two if a team that shares its ground with an NFL team makes it. (Or if San Jose does).

Interesting, but they will still make some silly rule that will allow the Red Bulls to get into the playoffs :D

Well, I guess that works......

Any thoughts and speculations as to who gets the 20th team to smooth things out schedule wise??? I would wager that they would hold at 20 for quite a while.

Yeah, they definitely expanded the playoffs from 8 teams to 10 because they knew the Red Bulls were going to finish 10th, just like in 2010 when they finished.... oh wait. In fact, there hasn't been a season since 2002 where the Metrostars/Red Bulls just missed the playoffs and would've benefited from that rule change. But yeah, they definitely did that so the Red Bulls would get it.

Seriously, do you ever not have no idea what you're talking about?

It's going to be in NYC, just a matter of finding a stadium site in the city. The league has a full time staff working on that.

And, Twellman IS replacing Harkes, per Grant Wahl.

In other news, Spurs 2 - 0 Villa at the half, Spurs currently 3rd with a game in hand.

Great abuse of the English language, jmh. :D

It gives more opportunities to teams to get into the mix. 10 is too many. Makes the regular season meaningless. Plus, more casual people will get in if RBNY is there because of the so-called stars that play there. If LA weren't playing, there would be hardly anyone watching the final. The league will do anything it can to get the stars into a situation where they can succeed.

I can't wait for the 20th team to be in NY and run RB into the ground.

Here is a great piece today by Martin Samuel in the Daily Mail.

For all of you City haters because of the money....maybe FINALLY this will wake you up. If it doesn't...nothing will.

I have no desire to rehash the City thing again, but moving beyond that, this article is important for what it says about clubs like Everton, Blackburn, Bolton, etc. Rather than sitting and chuckling, thinking the Financial Fair Play rules will negatively affect City and help them, supporters of those clubs should be absolutely HATING the new rules that are going to confine them to their current positions for just about forever.

I'm not sure I agree with that. Movement within the football league and lower echelons of the premiership does occur without enormous cash injections. Look at Stoke City. They were playing in the third tier ten years ago, and now they're in Europe. Norwich were in the third tier two years ago and made in through the second last year with a squad that was much cheaper than their competition. Now they're having a reasonably solid start in the premier league with a squad made up mostly of players purchased from lower league teams. Good management, prudent use of money, and the right team spirit does actually mean a lot up until you hit the top six or so teams in Britain.

What this regulation does is prevent teams from doing what Chelsea and Man City have done: buy their way to elite status. There is a huge gap between competent mid-table teams in the top league and the small elite group. I think that the problem lies in the very inequitable distribution of funds in which Champions League teams get enormous payouts that aren't shared throughout the pyramid. If that gets smoothed out to a more reasonable differential teams like Man City wouldn't feel that they have to operate at a 200 million pound loss in order to break into the club.

You might be right about what he meant. The thing is, he's so far beyond the benefit of the doubt at this point. Not to mention, he literally opted for the "I have black friends" defense, and posted this picture:

As an absolute best case scenario, the man is a buffoon. But hey, he's our buffoon, right Sunil Gulati?

I believe it's important we note here that the man pictured at right has one of the best names in recorded human history: Tokyo Sexwale.

That article was so poorly written (I mean in terms of the actual sentences, not necessarily the author's reasoning) that I couldn't get more than halfway through it.

Is he named for where he was conceived like Kobe Bryant and Brooklyn Beckham?

The first paragraph is debatable, the second, well, you're in for a surprise. The FFP rules won't effect City at all, just like the article says.
