World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Apparently Manchester teams are not all powerful, as both City and United look to be crashing out of the Champions League unless there are incredible last minute theatrics in ManU's game against Basel or the Napoli match against Villareal. I wonder what odds you would have gotten on that pair of results before the group stage began?

Was just gonna ask if I had this right...wow.

Suddenly that Cup tie holds a heck of a lot more meaning.

Welcome to the Europa League, Mancunians!

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Ajax got screwed twice against Real Madrid, although maybe it wouldn't have mattered in the end.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Can someone explain the Europa League to me? I thought it was for teams that didn't qualify for CL, but it seems like it's for CL teams that don't make the knockout stage? Is there a league for teams that don't make the CL at all?

There is no cup I am aware of that excludes all CL teams.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

City's exit from the CL this season really wasn't shocking yesterday in that the Blues needed Villrreal to take a point and that wasn't happening.

That being said, City were drawn it what was clearly the toughest group in the CL. They were the first team in 5 or 6 years to gain 10 points and NOT reach the knockout round.

City made mistakes which cost them dearly in the competition, but they showed heart a guts last night and our fans did us proud last night.

Just a few years ago when we were waiting for results in other grounds, it was to find out if we'd be playing in the Premier League or not. The club has still come a long way and I am excited for what is to come for City.

Winning the league is the target for this team. They had their taste of the CL and they will be there next year. Now the focus turns to winning the league and doing well in Europa League. The EL will be a good opportunity for younger players and fringe players to make an impact and force their way into Mancini's plans.

The Blue Moon is still rising!

CITY TIL I DIE

Teams that finish 3rd in their groups in the CL drop down to the Europa League. They will be drawn agains the lowest seeded remaining teams in the EL for the knockout stage. No english teams will face each other until possibly the round of 16.

It's both, and more. There's also some fallthrough to the Europa League from one of the pre-group-stages in the CL.

Is there a league for teams that don't make the CL at all?
No.

If Mancini gets knocked out of the Europa League before the final and loses the FA Cup game, how long before the Shiek takes Mancini out back and caps him? (Honest question)

He won't. People get the idea that Monsour is the 2nd coming of Abromovich. Sheik Monsour has stated that the main goal for this season is winning the league. If City does not win it, Mancini will be on the hot seat next season. The Europa League will be used to give young players a chance to play.

As far as the FA Cup is concerned, Mancini is under no pressure.

He will not be under pressure unless City fall flat on their faces the rest of this season. Monsour knows that this is still a work in progress and he will back Mancini.

Hughes was on a short leash as he was NOT the pick of Monsour or Al-Mubarak. Sheik Monsour leaves most of the business decisions to the Chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak.

An owner being sane? That's a shock. If that's the case, Mansour has some understanding of football. I'm just used to the reactionary (or over-reactionary) nature of chairmen. If people reacted the way they do back then, Sir Alex would've been fired. Even the most ardent City fan can't deny what SAF has done in his coaching career.

Oh I'll agree with you. United fans were calling for his head though in 1989 after they lost at Maine Road 5-1. How times changed after that.

Monsour and Al-Mubarak will give Mancini every chance to succeed.

More bad news for United...

Manchester United are worried captain Nemanja Vidic's knee injury could rule him out for the rest of the season.

The club are awaiting definitive news of the scan on his right knee, damaged in Wednesday's Champions League defeat against Basle.

But one of his representatives, Silvano Martina, said: 'He has ruptured his cruciate ligament. He will be out for several months.'

Severe bruising and swelling is thought to have made the procedure difficult..

If the news is true....United will be is desperate trouble.
Vidic is the most important player on that team.

No denying that Vidic anchors the D. United could be active in the winter window for the first time in a while. I expect a couple of moves.

I started following United when I was 11 back in '91, but I did familiarize myself with the past and fans wanting Sir Alex gone. Glad they didn't pull the trigger like a Roman would have done.

I think United will do ever so well to qualify for the Champions league next year. A lot of it obviously depends on other teams but it's going to be hard in the second half where United have to travel to eastlands, white hart lane, stamford bridge, and the emirates. United should abandon the Europa league as quickly as possible. Who would you go for in the transfer market? I'm not sure Cahill would want to come where we have Jones, Smalling, and Evans. I'd like Hazard but think he moves to London or one of the spanish clubs.

I have doubts that United will do much in the January window. I just don't see many teams selling top players. I think City may add 1 or 2 more faces to add depth for the murderous run in through February.

If City get through January with a 5+ point lead in the table, I think they will take the title with ease. United is in dire trouble. I have never seen a team ravaged this badly with injuries. They had depth issues before the season....now its really bad. The midfield is toothless...even with Cleverly...the back 4 will have issues without Vidic. No one to rescue Wio when he bollocks up the situation.

Curious about this since I am very new to EPL -- is this because the cost of relegation is just too high to justify a mid-table team from risking it? Or is it because all the top players are already clustered among teams with a shot at finishing in the top four?

Unless a team is hurting financially, or they have a player who is about to be out of a contract, they wont be too inclined to sell a player. The higher you finish in a season, the more money you get. You also might have a shot at Europe or another honor and you want to keep your players.

As for City, I see Tevez going to Juve for 20m...with sell on fees for the next 3 years and I see Mancini getting a Central defender and a central midfielder for cover.
