World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Curious about this since I am very new to EPL -- is this because the cost of relegation is just too high to justify a mid-table team from risking it? Or is it because all the top players are already clustered among teams with a shot at finishing in the top four?

I believe players have a harder time meshing with the rest of the team on a midseason transfer, too.

Most of the time, if someone needs to be moved, it happened over the summer. When it comes to teams looking to make a move now to shore up some sort of deficiency, well, they really have to worry about whether their new player will actually accomplish that.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

I have doubts that United will do much in the January window. I just don't see many teams selling top players. I think City may add 1 or 2 more faces to add depth for the murderous run in through February.

United may not be able to get a top player, but saying United can't do this but City can do that does sound a bit like wishful thinking. ;)

That assumes both clubs will be looking for similar things. Not necessarily true.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Uh, no it doesn't. They undboubtedy are not looking for the same things.

Okay, good. We agree.

That means it's not really wishful thinking to think City can add depth while it may be tough for United to add a real top player, no? Or are those the same thing after all?

Are you really not able to read through the lines? The point was he assumes much - United aren't going into the crapper especially if they let Rooney play more up front instead of back, and they don't HAVE to land a premier player to improve their chances at catching City. And I think it's pretty safe to assume what dubbie wants to happen.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

I don't mean to go all TBA on everyone, but holy **** is Chris Foy terrible. This remark from the BBC live commentary today is very fitting I think:

1808: A summary of the controversial incidents in that match, then; Peter Crouch's 'handball' in the opening goal, Luka Modric's penalty given, a 'foul' on Younes Kaboul not given, 'handball' from Jermain Defoe's shot not given, Emmanuel Adebayor's pefectly good goal ruled out, Younes Kaboul's red card... have I missed any?

HM on Twitter: "As an Arsenal fan I would like to lead the plaudits for the Chris Foy. Top performance from a top bloke."

I never said anything about a top player...I mean SQUAD PLAYER. Players for depth purposes. Top players are bought in the summer...

City doesn't need any top level players this January...just need to add to the depth of the squad.

United are in DESPERATION for top players. Cleverly and Jones are good but not great. Nani is brilliant for about 10 matches in a season, Chico is injured for a while...Vidic is done...your goalkeeper is a seive who faces way too many shots. Smalling is good for a mid table team. Rio is passed it. Evans is possibly one of the worst defenders in the Prem. United has severe issues. They gotten by on 1-0 victories until yesterday...it will be interesting to see how well they do without the top players that they have had.

Saw that...shocking performance. The offside call on Adebayor wasn't Foy though...it was the assisstant.

'Arry post match:

"I don't talk about refereeing decisions, never have done in 30 years of management, but I will today"

Well....

"I just question the referee’s overall performance which I thought was inept. Every game I see this season has seven or eight bookings. I think it’s frightening."
On Andy D’Urso’s performance at Wolves in February 2008

"I never walk in after games and complain about a referee but this guy is scary. He’s a poor referee and I’ve seen him make a mess of so many games. He’s really not good enough."
On Steve Tanner’s display in a 2-0 defeat at West Brom in December 2008

"He’s got a hand on the ball – it was a terrible decision. It was a gift that United didn’t deserve and it put them back in the game. Without that bit of help from the ref, I don’t think United would have come back."
On Howard Webb, for giving Manchester United a controversial penalty at Old Trafford in April 2009

Ouch. Rough day for Clint Dempsey yesterday. Didn't realize the Sinclair goal was practically an OG by Clint.

Villa:
3 of next 4 against Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. (without starting GK)
March 24-April 14: 4 of 5 against Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and ManU.

A while back I mentioned that Villa better make hay while they can...they didn't capture the points they should have against a weak early schedule. With a new manager it could have been worse to play the top of the table early but they didn't insulate themselves very well for what could be a few rough patches.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Good job Chelscum! :D

City still clearly the team to beat though.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

I know FIFA love a good empty threat, but this would be ridiculous.

Manchester United could make a surprise return to the Champions League after Fifa threatened to ban Swiss teams from all football. Uefa said it would review who would replace Basel in the knockout stages should the club be prevented from playing.

The Swiss Football Association has until 13 January to follow Fifa's instructions on the registration ban imposed on Sion or face a suspension, which would mean Basel's expulsion from the Champions League. Uefa confirmed this could lead to Sir Alex Ferguson's side returning to the competition as they finished third behind Basel in the group stage. Another option could be that Bayern Munich, drawn against Basel in the last 16, are given a bye.
