Utica University 2024-25 - Retooled and Reloaded

Here we go again with the smoky room.

The PW was just fine- there haven't been "cliffs" for years- but the D-3 selection committee just has to get its greasy fingers all over the process.

It's utterly ironic that a sport in which nearly every team loses money is less transparent than the sports which turn a profit.

What is so non transparent about a mathematical algorithm? That's as transparent as it gets. And you know before the season exactly what that algorithm is.

Yeah, I have an issue that every D3 sport can tweak the NPI calculations to suit themselves (and I did not like how D3 football overemphasized record over SOS), but those tweaks can't be changed during the season. So, you still know exactly what is needed for that season. In that sense, it's no different than the PWR. But whatever calculation they use (other than, obviously some are better than others), that's as transparent as you get.

I have no idea what your b*tch*ng about. Other than you just love to b*tch.

Get with the program, Russell. It's time for the NCAA to start awarding an AQ tournament berth to any team that has a "signature split" with Adrian!

edit: Fish, I'm just poking fun and this is a joke - please don't get super defensive and all agro on me. It's important that us few dozen D3 hockey supporters nationwide stick together...

I'm not sure what Fishman is all worried about. Since Utica is a "perennial national power" they should be a cinch to make the tournament.

Well, I'm not the only one on this board who's a reactionary. (I'll send you a mirror for Christmas.)

Still, once I actually reviewed the process, it looked OK. I was under the impression that the tweaks would come during the selection process, which was what used to constitute the smoky room.

For once, I was wrong... There's a first time for everything.

I don't know what "agro" means, but I'll assume that it has something to do with being an online AH..?

I'm much nicer in person. Everybody says so.

My point was "If it ain't broke..."

Still, I suspect that the PWR and this new one will likely yield the same field, so why tinker with it?

(And, BTW, any legit statistician would endorse the KRACH, my top choice, even though it would likely switch only one or two seeds.)

Thank you for the links. These are exactly what need to be read to understand the new data criteria/process.

The only thing I could not track down was the field size. For some reason I remember reading that it was increasing to 14 this year, but I couldn't find anything to confirm or deny that.

It's still 13 as far as I can tell: 10 conference champions and 3 at-large selections this year with the MAC getting their own bid

It was the ratio I believe. It was one spot for every 6.5 teams but now I think it dropped to one spot for every 6 teams. 6.5x13 is 84.5 and 6x14 is 84 and there's what 85-86 d3 teams now

I count 87. 88 next year when St. John Fisher joins.

So 87/6 = 14.5, so it should go up to 14 this year. (One thing to note is they will not round up anymore.)

Thing is, they said that they'd update and publish the rankings weekly, but I can't find them on that site (nor anywhere else).

Biggest weekend of the RS for UU, and likely for Genny as well. Utica appears to be healthy, so we'll see what they can do. Hope we have Landsberger in net tonight.

Utica takes it 2-1 in a shootout. Geneseo dominated the first half, Utica took over the second half. Good game all around.

UU was on the PK for most of the 1st

I can't opine about the officiating with much of any insight, because the camera man appeared to last have worked on The Blair Witch Project. But it certainly looked like good old d-3 home cooking.

Just the same, a "quality tie" ensued.

I'm fairly confident that Utica will have the upper hand tomorrow night. Just a hunch.

Yes just a tie but take the extra point in the standings. Home ice will be big come playoff time with Geneseo. Like Fish said, some questionable officiating. Giving the home team a 5 on 3 less than five minutes into the game is outrageous.

I didn't see either "infraction" that lead to the protracted 5x3, but I had to run out to buy some Dramamine somewhat later.

Can't wait to see decent production values, and hear a PxP person who has a clue, tomorrow.
