Travel 4: All Around the World Same Song

Hope you're doing OK, Slap. It took me quite a while. Three times.

? for you frequent flyers. Mrs. burd and I are flying ORD to SFO on Saturday, the 11th, for a week-long retreat with kids. It will be the 20th anniversary of 9-11; should we expect much change, time-wise, in the security process?
Yeah, everything is moving waaaaay slower due to COVID plus staffing issues at airports for TSA.

Looks like the White House is going to remove the air travel ban from EU, China, Brazil, etc starting in Nov.

....but not so fast. Vaccinated only, with negative test within a day of departure.

Yet another tool for pushing the unvaccinated out of civilized society.

Them Libs aren't gonna take away your freedumbs thanks to him...

Just returned from a 6-day family retreat near Cazadero, CA at an airbnb called Luxury Estate in the Redwoods. 3 adult kids with partners, Mrs. burd and I. No children. Remote but with access to great hikes, good wineries, and small village markets. Great kitchen provisions and lots of room for individual privacy indoors or out. Recommend if you have a group that is OK with North Bay venue, likely without young children. Much like the Santa Cruz Mountains south of the City, it's far more country than "North Bay."

Sounds wonderful!

Fiance and I are skipping Christmas and taking advantage of the long weekend. All she wants is "warmer than Michigan" weather and a room with a soaking tub. My first instinct was Vegas and there were some decent sales last month, so I grabbed a suite at The Venetian with a refundable deposit. Neither of us are big gamblers though, so I'm looking at other options.

I poked around with San Diego as a possible alternative, but the flights are now just absurdly expensive, even in economy. I've axed Palm Springs and Puerto Rico for the same reason. My parents suggested Panama City or Biloxi, but meh. That leaves me with New Orleans and Galveston.

Does anyone have recommendations for New Orleans? How's Galveston this time of year, and is it easy to get there from either of the Houston-area airports without renting a car?

New Orleans is amazing. Just walk around and hang out with the locals. They are the city. The only touristy thing I'd do is Saint Louis Cemetery. Otherwise just hit the off-peak clubs, nurse an (excellent) cocktail, and listen. A New York or San Francisco 10 street musician is a New Orleans 4. Only comparable city in the world is Paris.

mookie has plans to visit the US for christmas weekend, then return and fly again to athens for nye. girl and the kids will all reach one world platinum with the three segment flights.
considering milan for the long weekend end of feb.

girl and i flew to NO last summer (2020) and not much was open. we ate at peche over in an area that had a lot of restaurants. was a little market type building across the street from there with a beer garden and other small food stalls. next night we ate at metropolitan on bourbon street area. very good. we had a table but they had bar seating too so maybe reservations (we had) perhaps aren't required for that.

New Orleans is overrated even though I've had fun there multiple times. Not Vegas overrated, but still. Yeah there's some charm and vibrancy, but outside of a few blocks it's a shithole and I was there 3x before Katrina reduced it. For music I'd rather go to Austin or Nashville. For food I'd rather go to San Francisco or Chicago. For culture give me New York or Miami. ffs you have to go UP to see the river.

Opinions vary. Of the 8 cities in your paragraph, New Orleans is the only one where I would consider living.

(Though I would live outside of Vegas.)

You can still have a lot of fun without gambling. My wife and I were there Jan 2020 for the Fortress tournament and didn't place a single bet. The over-the-top-ness of it all is fun to experience now and then. I don't know if I'd go there all the time, but the occasional trip in is fun.

Whether either of you were unimpressed with the music in Austin or Nashville doesn't do much for N.O. It remains overrated.
