Thinking back on it, I can't tell you the last time I saw an actual breadbox. It had to have been when I was a kid, when my one friend's family used one. Nobody my age seems to use them in their homes these days.

They're still around, they're just really country goose like Hummel figurines or those stupid wall stars. Half the homes out in my neck of the woods have bread boxes, preserve jars, the works.

My mom had Hummels, and now my brother has taken them since she passed. He's a good bit older than me, turns 56 this year. Canning/jarring your own preserves, however, are making a comeback around these parts. Families are looking for ways to cut costs since wages have been stagnant for so long, and some lady friends of mine talk about getting together in a group to make big batches of them and then each taking X jars home. Jellies and jams have gotten expensive, I'm told, if you're looking for something with actual fruit in them and not loaded with extra sugar.

(nice sidetracking of a thread.)

My Mom's family had so many preserves jarred in the basement that it looked like one of those demonstration about critical mass.

I'm wondering if that's not because of <strike>two</strike> three things: 1. Lower consumption of breads. 2. More widespread use of anti-staling agents. 3. People just use the fridge now*.

*With the exception of fresh-baked. I don't think I would put homemade bread in the fridge. Just tends to ruin the "artisan" structure of the bread.

Problem is, a proper jam usually requires sugar to set up properly. Though I'm sure nowadays there's some fancy designer pectins or binders that require less sugar.
