Re: Sports Allegiances

The second of my two choices is now the only one that applies. ;)

Re: Sports Allegiances

Somehow I think it would be fascinating here if, short of writing essays, there were an easy way for everyone to explain why they pull for the teams they do.
Brevity is not my strong suit, but here goes:
(More or less) In order of Importance:

NFL: Packers Born into the Wisconsin teams. Despite growing up in the Twin Cities, I came from a Wisconsin family. Most of my relatives (including myself) are UW alums. Old man is from West Allis, mother is from the Nakoma neighborhood in Madison. Deep ties all round. Went through a phase where I pulled for the cowboys, simply because I got teased A LOT in grade school for being a cheesehead. They were just an easy, popular, non-Vikings choice I could make.
CH: Badgers
NHL: Wild I became attached from the moment they showed up. Despite their best attempts, I haven't found a reason worth abandoning them.
CF: Badgers
MLB: Brewers, soft spot for Twins What can I say, I sort of have duel citizenship and I was never teased as a kid by a Twins fan.
Int'l Soccer: USA, then Germany, Austria and Norway when the US isn't involved Citizenship and heritage.
Club Soccer: No real allegiances, just a general dislike of most of the top teams not called Bayern I don't like the Yankees or Lakers. Why would I like their soccer equivalents?
CBB: Badgers
NBA: Apocalypse, then the Bucks and T-Wolves. I'd feel conflicted if I actually cared.

Soft spots for:
NFL: The Steelers, if it weren't for their fans. The Lions, out of pity.
NHL: Edmonton, I guess. Maybe Montreal, for the history.
CH: The smaller WCHA schools (namely Tech and UAA). Miami (almost applied there). Any school in the NCAAs that doesn't have a lot of NCAA success.
MLB: Meh.
NCAAF: Penn State (love JoePa, and all he represents). Indiana (brother-in-law works in their AD)
NCAAB: Indiana.
Soccer: There are loads of teams I like, but not enough that I could cheer for them without feeling like a poseur. Preferably teams with lots of history but aren't thought of as HUGE MEGA MONEY CLUBS. (See: lots of German clubs, since there's actually parity there, AVFC, Fulham, Stoke, West Brom, etc.). International? Costa Rica (long story), Jamaica and Netherlands.

Hate list:
NFL: Bears, Vikings (obvious reasons), Cowboys, Patriots and Jets (for the obnoxious coverage they get).
NHL: Sharks (one of the reasons the North Stars left, one of the reasons Milwaukee never got a team), Blackhawks (North Stars rival, another reason Milwaukee never got a team), Ducks and Canucks (for the same reason: I can't stand those goons, or their fans)
CH: Minnesota and North Dakota (duh)
MLB: Yankees and Red Sox (for the same reasons 4/5 of every free-thinking person hates them). White Sox and Cubs (screw Chicago. I'll take your music and your Italian beef and leave the rest of you to rot)
Soccer: Mexico. Italy. Same reasons as everyone else. Man U, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barcelona, everyone in Italy. Same reasons as everyone else who doesn't like them.
NCAAF: Ohio State, everyone south of Big Ten territory, most Pac-12 schools. Obvious reasons.
NCAAB: Everyone, I guess.
NBA: Lakers, Celtics and LeBron. Just like the rest of the world.

For me, the oddball would be the Jacksonville Jaguars... In the early 90's, I had family that lived down in Jacksonville.... My aunt and uncle were fairly involved in getting support for the team drummed up on the grassroots level while the team was being created... Through that, they always seemed to get some Jaguars gear to me for Christmas, Birthdays, etc...

Well, when the 1996 miracle run to the AFC Championship game happened, people around Chicagoland seemed to notice that I had Jags gear... With the Bears being so-so, I just started passing myself off as a Jaguars fan... As my interest in sports grew, so did my fandom... I liked players like Jimmy Smith and Fred Taylor, so that helped along with some success for the team overall... Lately it's been frustrating and dissapointment, but my mind is made up :o

Re: Sports Allegiances

Already explained my Sharks' allegiance

My interest in Florida State goes back to a Michigan-Miami game in 1988 in which the Wolverines blew a 30-14 lead in 7 minutes. As an 8 year old who was playing his first year of football, I learned some things that day. A number of new curse words from my father and the belief that he really, really, really hated Miami. This had the unintended consequence of my mother cutting back the times I was allowed to watch Michigan games when my father was around. Those teams seemed to frustrate him more then make him happy.

Miami did go on to lose to Notre Dame later that year, but I could tell my dad really didn't like Notre Dame either, so they were out. The next time I saw them lose a game, it was at Florida State the next year. That FSU team was almost as full of trash talking and taunting as the 80's Miami teams, and the Warchant was impressive to a 9 year old. So, here I am.

Re: Sports Allegiances

Against:

NFL: Packers
NHL: *Rangers and *Flyers (used to be Blackhawks, but when the North Stars left, that died out)
MLB: obligatory Yankees, but it's more of "I'm sick of them" than actual hatred, White Sox (although Ozzie Guillen is so entertaining)
NCAAH: SIOUX, then the Badgers (holy f* I f*ing hate the *ing Sioux)

I suppose it is a different story for those of us in Alaska. Keep in mind, we have no major professional sports teams. This makes things a bit more open ended when it comes to choosing teams.

Going through mine:

CH: UAA. This one is self explanatory
NHL: Stars. Modano has always been my favorite player so I followed the Stars. Now it's most parts love developed and a small part of "people in Minnesota don't like them".
NBA: haha no. I can't stand the NBA these days, long live the lockout!
NFL: Seahawks if anybody. I'm not much of an NFL fan. I like football but it's not high on the list. I root for the Seahawks because I went to school in Tacoma and I have a lot of friends who are Seahawks fans.
CFB: Washington. This is different. My Mom went to school at UW so I grew up watching UW football. Now my parents live in Seattle and are season ticket holders.
MLB: none. I just don't care about baseball.
MLS: Seattle Sounders. When living in Tacoma, going to school with little money, being a soccer guy, the easiest option was driving to Qwest Field, paying $5 to park, buying a ticket for $8-10, and watching the old USL Sounders. That love carried when they went to MLS. I used to root for Dc United (because of John Harkes and Eddie Pope) but always said "the minute Seattle gets a team I'm out".
Soccer: USA, don't like the Euro teams. I'm American and I just can't get behind the Euro teams, club or country. In fact I have a serious hate for Eurosnobs, people who will watch Man U but can't be bothered to watch an MLS team. * them.

Re: Sports Allegiances

Why Gustavus?

Grandfather was a coach in several sports, grandmother taught there, mother, father, brother, uncle, aunt and a nephew went there, used to spend two weeks in the summer in St. Peter and would attend several events during the year on weekends.

As for a rooting against list - I don't have one but there are occasions when it will happen.

I thought it was a "hate" list, not root against. I only root against teams as it pertains to my team.

Re: Sports Allegiances

I've seen the word, "against" used several times. If you replace it with, "hate" I don't get the concept.

Well, some people want (insert team) to lose all the time, no matter who they are playing. Some just want that team to lose when that result harms "their" team. Slight difference, but I felt it needed to be pointed out.

The teams I listed, I hate. But, I'm not one to go and root for the Sioux to lose to Denver, if it has no bearing on where MN stands (say, the PWR rankings in crunch time).

Re: Sports Allegiances

Still don't get the concept.

You must not have any such teams then:p

There are a few different options: For example, I'm a Cardinals (MLB) fan. This means I hate the Cubs. There's no real reason for it now, but the two clubs have a rivalry going back 100+ years. I couldn't tell you the real reason for it offhand, and nowadays it's more a good-natured, fun rivalry than anything, but there you have it: I always want the Cubs to lose, except when it helps my team for them to win.

On the otherhand, a rivalry between the Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds has popped up in the last few seasons, and it has a specific cause: toward the end of the season last summer, there was some trash-talking before a game, and it caused an issue during the game which turned into a nasty brawl. The animosity was compounded by the fact that the Reds ended up winning the pennant the Cards had been favored for. It's carried over into this season, and gives fans of either team a new team to root against, due to the recent bad blood between them, and might fizzle out in a few years, unlike the Cards-Cubs feud.

Re: Sports Allegiances

Still don't get the concept.

Prime example:

The *ing Goddamm Sioux (who should be hanged by a lynch mob; wait, too soon?) vs the Gophers: * THE SIOUX. LOSE YOU AHOLES!

(MN is locked into their seed for postseason, nationally and in-conference; Sioux are playing MTU, a known soft spot team for me):
Well, I hope MTU wins, but overall? Meh.

That's "against"

Hatred is the first statement when (insert team) is playing ANY other team.

Re: Sports Allegiances

Teams against/I hate/if they never won a GD game that would be just peachy with me:

CH: UMich, LSSU
CF: UMich
NFL: Bears, Broncos
NHL: Anaheim
NBA: Every last farking one of them.
