Sports Allegiances

Re: Sports Allegiances

NFL: Vikings
NHL: Wild & Wings... Gosh, I should try to put Buffalo on that list just to be a dork. :)
MLB: Twins
NBA: What is this NBA of which you speak?
NCAAH: Gophers & Tech
NCAAFB: Gophers
NCAABB: Gophers, Oakland University, and the underdogs during March Madness
DIII: St. Olaf
NASCAR: Don't care anymore
Golf, Tennis, Soccer: Don't really care, but whoever I happen to pick up on while watching is who I want to win

Re: Sports Allegiances

MLB: Phillies, Dodgers (although it is difficult anymore to root for the LAD)
NHL: Redwings, Islanders (although it is downright impossible anymore to root for the NYI)
NFL: Eagles, Lions (although it has never made much sense to root for the Lions)
NBA: When I cared, the Lakers and the Sixers. I haven't cared since the early 1990s
NCAAH, NCAAFB, NCAABB: Notre Dame
I also root for North Carolina in NCAABB. No idea where that came from, just remember liking them as far back as the pre-Jordan days, and that Dean Smith was an even better person than he was a coach.

Re: Sports Allegiances

Is there really trash talk going on between US soccer teams?
I'm just floored to find out that there are more than 2 soccer fans in this country.

Mine should be pretty easy to figure out.
MLB: Twins
NHL: Wild
NFL: Vikings
NBA: Don't care
NCAAH: Tech
NCAAF: Non-BCS conference schools
NCAAB: Don't care, but during tournament time I cheer for the small schools
Soccer: I couldn't name a single team or player, I care less about soccer than I do about basketball
Golf: Rory, Tom Watson, Tiger, anyone not named Phil
NASCAR: I don't watch it much anymore but back when I did I liked Mark Martin and Sterling Marlin

Re: Sports Allegiances

FOR -
NFL: Patriots; Eagles;
MLB: BoSox; Phillies
NHL: Flyers
NBA: Sixers
CH: BU
NCAAB: BU, Notre Dame, Temple
NCAAF: Notre Dame; BU
EPL: Aston Villa
MLS: Philly Union
NCAASoccer: BU

Against -
NFL: Colts; Cowboys; Giants
MLB: Yankees; Mets
NHL: anybody playing Flyers
NBA: Lakers; Lebron
CH: BC
NCAAB: Duke
NCAAF: USC; Florida; Ohio State
EPL: Man City
MLS: Everybody but Union

Reasoning: I've lived in 2 regions in my life, mid-atlantic 2x and New England 2x. Both times I moved to New England the Pats and Sox were at low points and there was no access to Sunday ticket or sports networks...you watched the local teams and since there was no competition with teams I grew up with (Phillies and Eagles) it became 'easy' to follow the local team and end up rooting for the hapless Pats and the bridesmaid Sox. I was in Boston in the early to mid 80's so got to experience the miracle of the Pats going to the SB and then getting killed and the loss to the Mets in the WS. Both events helped create a bond with the team that might not have persisted had they won.

Not the same with NBA and NHL where fierce rivalries existed throughout my travels and constant battles kept me from ever taking a rooting interest in the Bruins or Celtics (although I don't root against them unless they are playing 'my' teams)

Add to that, all of my kids were born in NE and grew up watching the Boston/NE teams...they are solely loyal to the Sox, Pats, Bruins and Celtics. ESPN, MLB network, internet and Sunday ticket allow them to maintain contact with those teams.

Earliest football memories are of watching ND highlights after church on Sundays. Growing up Irish-catholic in a family that all played football cemented the affinity for the Irish. BU killing football allows me to root for ND without guilt.

MLB: Brewers
NFL: Packers
NHL: Oilers
NBA: Yeah, right
CFB: Navy, Wisconsin but that's fading, whoever is trying to upset the apple cart in a given year (TCU, Boise, etc.)
CBB: Wisconsin, sort of; Indiana
CH: Wisconsin, though it's waning
MLS: Portland (seemed proper when trying to figure out who to support considering I despise everything about the greater Seattle region)
Int'l Soccer: USA, Netherlands

I also love cycling even though I rarely post in the thread here about it. Don't really have a favorite rider or team, though.

And since sports schadenfreude is so fun (and the topic of a hilarious article by Steve Rushin from some years ago):

Against -
NFL: Vikings, Raiders
MLB: Cubs, Cardinals
NHL: Red Wings, Canucks
NBA: Yeah, right
CFB: Notre Dame, Ohio State, the entire SEC, Florida State
NCAAB: UCONN, anywhere John Calipari is currently cheating
CH: Boston College, RIT
MLS: Seattle, obviously

And the only team I legitimately hate? The Mexican national soccer team.

Somehow I think it would be fascinating here if, short of writing essays, there were an easy way for everyone to explain why they pull for the teams they do.

Why Gustavus?

I have a slight soft spot for them as well. I have a lot of friends that went there and visited often, seeming my school was 10 miles away.

Oh yeah that reminds me. I root for the Purple Mavericks in NCAAH when they aren't playing the Gophers.

Re: Sports Allegiances

CH: Clarkson
MLB: Red Sox
NFL: whomever the Redskins are playing
NHL: Washington
CFB: USNA, ND

I agree, but I think 95% of why people cheer for certain teams has to do with where they grew up, where they went to college, or where they currently live. It's the out of left field ones that would have the fun explanations (for example: Brent the Minnesotan cheering for the NJ Devils and the Buffalo Bills)

Yep, that is exactly it for me. I cheer for the teams that I watched growing up, the teams that my dad took me to games to see, and the Wild. The Wild weren't around when I was growing up, and after the North Stars left I just quit paying attention to the NHL instead of adopting a new team like Brent did.

Ditto for me.

And, as for my completely random ones (Raiders and Portland)--my dad would work Sundays when he was young, and he'd get home in time to watch the late games, which usually involved the Raiders. Since my mom liked football as well, we'd watch it as a family on Sundays, and the fandom was passed down. The Portland thing? Pretty much the same reason you've seen me around the Michigan Tech fan contingent over the last few years-- FM is a fan, and instead of just rolling my eyes at it I'm trying to understand and join in.
