Sports Allegiances

Re: Sports Allegiances

NCAAH: Ferris State
NFL: Lions
NHL: Red Wings
MLB: Quit paying any attention 30 years ago
NCAAB: MSU
NCAAF: Anyone playing Michigan or Notre Dame
NASCAR: Any "sport" that started out as bootleggers avoiding the revenuers should be respected, but I can't
NBA: If there is a choice between watching the NBA or paint dry, I'll choose paint
MLS: Soccer is a Communist plot to corrupt the Youth of America

Re: Sports Allegiances

(More or less) In order of Importance:

NFL: Packers
CH: Badgers
NHL: Wild
CF: Badgers
MLB: Brewers, soft spot for Twins
Int'l Soccer: USA, then Germany, Austria and Norway when the US isn't involved
Club Soccer: No real allegiances, just a general dislike of most of the top teams not called Bayern
CBB: Badgers
NBA: Apocalypse, then the Bucks and T-Wolves.

Think foe yourself, not what CenturyLink Field's scoreboard tells you to think. :p
Odd comment since any game at CLink I've been to has the score on the scoreboard. The only thing plastic is the field.

Remember kids, Portland Timbers: 4 Leagues, no trophies.

Re: Sports Allegiances

Brent, when did you pick the Bills and Devils?

The Bills: a couple years after Jim Kelly joined the team and just before Thurman Thomas joined, when I started really getting back into sports hardcore. Growing up, I liked the Raiders simply because of Lyle Alzado, but I obviously grew out of that (thank goodness).

The Devils: the North Stars were stolen from MN, so I had to choose a new team. Marty and the Devils it was. I already had been a fan of Claude Lemieux, Ken Daneyko, and Valeri Zelepukin, along with Terreri and Billington, so it made sense.

Re: Sports Allegiances

CH: RPI
MLB: Cardinals
NHL: Blues...and RPI alumni
NFL: Rams? I'm not really a football person...:p

And of course, the Olympics are fantastic. USA! and the underdog:o

Re: Sports Allegiances

Give me a break, we needed one primary team in common if this relationship was going to work. ;)

Well * you, buddy. ;)

I was in the phase of becoming a casual fan, for whatever reason (didn't help that the rest of my family weren't into sports at all), so that "helped." When my circle of friends expanded, the sports fanaticism started up again, and was full-rage when some of my buddies and I got into sports cards/FFL.

Front runner.

Re: Sports Allegiances

Uh, those teams weren't that good when I started following them. They were the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked, but they weren't great.

Based upon your timeline the Bills were 12-4 in Kelly's 3rd season and the Devils made the playoffs 1990-95. No big deal in the end, but...

Like I said, not suck, but not like hopping on the Pats' bandwagon of late, or the more traditional Cowboys/Red Wings/Yankees crap. Based upon the player I liked, I chose my teams. :)

Re: Sports Allegiances

I can sort of accept Brent's choice of the Devils. They were the laughingstock of the Wales Conference for most of the 80s, and hadn't been contenders prior to the arrival of Brodeur and Jacques Lemaire. It's not like he made the easy choice and latched onto the Penguins because of Lemieux/Jagr or the Wings because of Yzerman/Federov.

The Devils were already making the playoffs by the time he latched on, but no big deal either way.

MLB: Twins
NFL: Vikings
NHL: The Wild I guess
NBA: What?
NCAA all: Gophers

Soft spots for: Gustavus in all, UMD/MSUM hockey, PSU football
