Sayonara - Wayne State

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

Condolences to everyone involved in the Wayne State Women's Hockey Program. A very sad time indeed, and shocking that the AD would choose to ignore the needs of those in the program by announcing the decision so late. A pox on him! No reason this could not have been communicated in March, to give everyone a chance to make the right decisions for their future.

P.S. I also really wish everyone would stop picking on Brooky. It definitely gives Canadians a bad name. We need far more non-parent fans interested if women's hockey is to thrive. I've been fortunate to meet quite a few like him, and really admire the special dedication and passion for the teams they support. Definitely enhances our own experience as parent-fans.

I suppose it's possible that his superiors did not give him much notice that he must cut the budget by "x percent" by a certain date. In that case the school administration should have let him know a lot sooner. But if in fact he know this was coming when the season ended or shortly thereafter then for sure the blame lies squarely with him.

Totally agree here and, like Brooky, I go to the majority of Gopher womens' games, and for me nearly all of the mens' games also. Have always been a huge fan of amateur hockey (the NHL not so much) since my own playing days ended quite a few years ago. Anyway I can attest that the Gopher women draw quite a few "regular fans" who do not have daughters or close relatives on the team, and I've gotten to know quite a number of them, including Brooky. I only wish there were a lot more just like us! Instead of the arena being consistently just one third to one half full it would be great if they could attract a lot more non-parent fans who simply enjoy watching great hockey. I'm sure fans of other teams here feel the same way, so what happened to Wayne State doesn't spread to any more schools.

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

With a National debt at 14 Trillion $ and counting (expected to be 20 Trillion $ by 2015) is it reasonable to think that this may not be the last institution that makes drastic cuts in their athletic programs due to "continuing reductions in state appropriations to higher education"?

A few years ago, Minnesota announced that they were getting rid of men's gymnastics and both golf teams for budgetary reasons. Outside funding was found to save all of these programs, so it is possible that WSU delayed announcing the decision to explore possibilities for saving women's hockey. Likely not, but I hate to condemn those responsible when I don't know the constraints under which they were operating.

In any case, not good news for any of us.

This is rich. Your friend Brooky just trumpeted a few posts ago how he hasn't paid to watch a game in two years. How is that supporting women's hockey?

The national debt has virtually nothing to do with state budgets.

A number of schools in the east don't charge admission for women's games.

It's all symptomatic of the same rot that permeates the global financial system with the underlying cause being the opaque and unregulated world of over the counter derivatives with the USA and their "1 plus 1= 13" FASB being at the heart of the problem.

The USA is a bankrupt country. Many states, cities, towns and counties are following suit...many of which are already there. The global economic downturn that has been brought on by unhealthy and worse, dangerous, financial practices that have been allowed to grow for at least a decade pervades all entities...at a very minimum through the trickle down effect. To think that any financial entity is immune from it is to not have a clear understanding of what is taking place. It's akin to thinking that air doesn't cross state lines or international boundaries.

This valid question is directly related to a thread I started back in March about the quality of D1 play as it may be affected by financial belt tightening due to the worsening economic circumstances in the USA. Not sure if the link will work...it's been deleted with last season's threads.

Because as a Friend of Gopher Women's Hockey I am sure he monetarily supports the program to a far greater extent than the amount of a ticket, or 17.

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

Depends on what football games. The simple reason regarding hockey is in the Detroit area unless it's the Wings they don't support hockey unless they have some connection to that team. It's not the same hockey culture as say Can or MN. Wonder if they sold beer at the WSU games since it's not on campus?

No beer was served {:< ( So true about the hockey culture here in Motown. Just across the river in Windsor....THAT'S where the hawkey madness really begins. (Interestingly, not at the university level, though. They must take their edumacation seriously..) To me, the prospect of hockey at WSU, while kinda neat, was a bit of a head-scratcher. Basically a commuter college. A good chunk of the students are part-timers who have jobs, families and mortgages. No rink on campus. I mean, if you drive by on a typical football Saturday, their 6,000 (six) seat stadium/field is about 1/3 full..and they've been winning! I think 10 and 2 last year. Not a real surprise but really bummed for those girls.

Correct mostly a commuter college, even with the med school, people live else where. Last year was good for football but they did not make the playoffs and are up and down in the GLIAC. The women's team was not promoted well, and it's not like they really needed an on campus rink. The rink was close enough, seemed to work well, and others used it so the word could have been spread.

Curious now as to why they didn't fold the women's team when they did the men's? Wonder if there are any Title IX implications?

Beginning with the 1997-1998 season, thru the completion of the 2008-2009 season, I purchased a ticket for literally every home game, and anywhere from 40% to 80% of road games depending on the season. That's just the tickets for admission to a game. I've also regularly attended the annual GWH summertime rally held at the Minnesota State Fair. GWH has had a number of events / games at Ridder Arena which were free to the public and I snuck into all of those as well. I personally characterize that as supporting the team. In those aspects alone, I'd bet I've supported women's college hockey significantly more than many other fans within this very forum...bet I've bought more tickets and attended more games than many others. The parents, family, friends and relatives of the players...when the careers of their daughters, sisters, friends, nieces, etc. etc. are done, they're gone...rarely, if ever to be seen at a game again. Doesn't work that way for me. I'm back every season.

I know that I owed this explanation to the resident inquiring midget minds...so there it is.

A number of schools in the east don't charge admission for women's games.

Sean
So, those that attend these games free of any admission charge, they aren't supporting the sport then? They most definitely are...and it's a post that makes a relevant and valid point. Not too hard to understand if your judgement isn't clouded by a ceaseless childish, angry motive.

Here's my point.................................................................................................................................here's you.

Here's a person of reason.....................................................................here's you.

Because as a Friend of Gopher Women's Hockey I am sure he monetarily supports the program to a far greater extent than the amount of a ticket, or 17.

Sure...you bet.... and the away games?

It's indefensible.
On average, probably an absolute minimum of tickets purchased for road games would be 50%...much closer to 100% for other seasons spanning the years from 1997-1998 thru 2008-2009. A lot of travel expense comes with buying tickets for and attending those road games. It's been well worth it...enjoy the hell out of watching GWH.

Your completely typical uninformed personal focus of unfounded attack on my own credibility as a supporting fan is the true indefensible position.

You don't want to hear the facts, maybe you should keep your mouth shut with your infantile disparaging personal attacks full of nothing but yourself and misinformation. I'll pray that someday your brain develops beyond the level of a four year old.

Really guys, I am in favor of all of you having your posts blocked. Who cares!!!!! Come on, we come here to follow what's going on in girls hockey, support the girls, period whether we have kids or girls playing hockey. My daughter is going to an ecac school but we live in a cha town. I goto their games and support their team too. I want to see all of women's hockey improve. And I want to see USA beat Canada but I don't dislike my canadian friends and I appreciate great hockey and a good player when I see one. can we stop this madness and post what's Germaine to the topics at hand????
