Sayonara - Wayne State

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

The philosophy of D-III athletics is centered around athletic participation as part of a well-rounded education, while D-I promotes a more focused emphasis of competition in one sport. I believe that the D-III schools themselves feel that it is somewhat contradictory to such a philosophy to then offer a sport that places a D-I level importance on competition at an otherwise D-III institution.

This ban wasn't initiated by the D-3 Schools. This was initiated by the DI schools. There are some DIII schools that feel that way, but they can just choose not to play up. No skin off their backs whatso ever.

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

What exactly is the rationale that the NCAA gives for their irrational dislike for play-ups? It makes no sense to me. I think the NCAA's response to RIT is going to be "You have a title IX problem? All you have to do is send your men back to DIII, and it will go away."

Which does make one wonder about today's CHN tweet of a D-III program being added in the Rochester area. :D

Heard a rumour it was University of Rochester. Is it just a Men's program or Men's and Women's?

Be nice to have both. Especially considering the fate of the ECAC West on the women's side could be in grave danger if the SUNYAC women's league forms in the near future.

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

Here we are a week later, and i still cant believe my lady warriors won't be on the ice this winter.
I was hoping i was having a bad dream,but i now know it's not a dream, but real,it's over.
Thats it for me as far a wayne state sports goes,i have no reason to go back there, except the few occasions
my beloved GVSU Lakers come in to whup up on wayne state in the other sports.
I wanna wish all the best to the current players and coaches, and hope they all find new places to play and coach.
I wanna thank all of my past warriors for giving me great thrills and memories that will not fade over time.
I'm gonna miss all of you,I will always be your # 1 fan.
God bless you all, love you !!

I believe it will be Nazareth College adding both.
It's a very nice campus and a small school but doubt they'll build a rink on it.

I feel for you man...I can't even comprehend the exact opposite of how I've felt for the last several months. :(

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

I don't get the shock of the players about this announcement!!! The woman's program was doomed when the men's program folded. They started off on the right foot with
Bill Wilkerson as coach and a well-healed alum, Pete Karmanos, supporting a fund raising campaign to build a new rink.

Are you kidding me? 3 weeks after the annual awards? 10 days after naming captains and you don't see the shock? Recruits were set and ready to come and you don't get it? Come on man. That makes no sense to say you don't understand the shock. No one expected it. No ONE!

BTW, it's WILKINSON and the Karmanos link to a new rink never came full circle. I agree with you that it started right, but when the AD doesn't back a program it's only a matter of time. Especially when you're pouring money into the football and baseball programs and stadiums.

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

Hey scally,enjoy your program.
This hurts now,but it will really hit me this fall when i used to look forward to
those friday nights and saturday afternoons,it will be a real empty feeling.

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

One thing that's always confused me: I see hockey as small enough where it's maybe easier to be competitive from an institutional standpoint (purely on the smaller number of DI schools than other sports), yet big/popular enough to get something if you are competitive - a school like BU or North Dakota has some mainstream recognition despite being complete non-factors in football/basketball.

If I were a school like a Wayne State, I would dump everything into having a good hockey program, even if it meant not having a football program at all.

That's the idea for many of the schools, such as Minnesota-Duluth (men's 2010-11 champs). They're a pretty small DII school but hockey is their main sport (although they are also do have a really good DII football program)

Unfortunately, women's sports don't get much mainstream recognition, only the top few women's NCAA teams in any sport are semi-mainstream. The way Wayne State supported their men's program it was inevitable the women's would one day go too, but the way they just dumped the program after announcing 2011-12 captains, schedule, etc... is appalling!

North Dakota also had some success in other sports at the D-II level, winning a D-II national championship ten years ago in football and three straight in the late 90s in women's basketball. While they aren't likely to make a splash as far as being competing for D-I championships, it isn't because they ignore the other sports.

It's not about ignoring the other sports - I appreciate the value of a broad-based athletic program. It's more a matter of 1. spending what you have to spend to be competitive, 2. if you're short, understanding the value (actual or potential) of each program to your school when looking at cutbacks. If it's accepted that WSU was willing to do #1 (I don't know their situation enough to comment), then I think they made an error on #2, both now and when they cut the men's team. Okay, maybe women's hockey isn't the centerpiece of anyone's athletic department, but men's and women's in tandem? Sure.

I think of someone like UNO, who had to make a tough choice with football and wrestling in order to go DI for their non-hockey sports. Not the most popular move in the short term to drop two of the most popular sports in that part of the country, but probably the right one.

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

Check out WSU's new facility: http://wsuathletics.com/photo_gallery.aspx?gallery=244
Not bad for a school that has "no" money... it's too bad that buildings appear to have more value than the 24 student-athletes who worked hard to make and play hockey for WSU (as a side note, WSU's women's hockey players is proud to say it had a 3.40 GPA, AND had over 1300 hours of community service). These young women have pride, they are ambassadors of the school and athletic department, they are leaders, and will go on to be leaders in the community. It's a shame... The one positive thing to come out of this, is that these young women have become fighters, to keep this program alive and to find a spot "out there". But, WSU, keep building new facilities, keep putting up cement "W" statues, and keep plastering the brick walls with some fancy decal... and while doing so, you can be proud to say that "we cut athletic programs here and thus force aspiring young professionals to seek other schools". I guess WSU is not afraid to lose tuition money... seeing as a good majority of these players were not on full rides! After all, why would all 24 want to return to WSU after being treated with little to no respect from the instant the decision was made to cut the program? WSU, you are throwing away great students, great athletes, great people!

Trust me, nobody cares about any FB in that part of the country except for UNL. UNO going DI in football would be an incredible resource drain for absolutely no gain. At the DII level it was controllable, but at the DI level whether it's D1A or D1AA, the increased cost would eat their lunch. (I know they call them something else, but I'm not sure why.)

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

It's nice to see support for the program. Even if successful the damage is already done with recruits scrambling to find other teams and the CHA and other 11-12 opponents rescheduling the now open dates of the WSU schedule.

It's HORRIBAL how the university cut the program shortly after announcing the 2011-12 captains and schedule. I don't like to see any sports cut, esp hockey, and this was not the way to do it. besides appealing with Wayne State’s Board of Governors these girls and their families should get a good lawyer!
