Sayonara - Wayne State

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

Really guys, I am in favor of all of you having your posts blocked. Who cares!!!!! Come on, we come here to follow what's going on in girls hockey, support the girls, period whether we have kids or girls playing hockey. My daughter is going to an ecac school but we live in a cha town. I goto their games and support their team too. I want to see all of women's hockey improve. And I want to see USA beat Canada but I don't dislike my canadian friends and I appreciate great hockey and a good player when I see one. can we stop this madness and post what's Germaine to the topics at hand????

The problem with you is you have no idea of the history involved here. This guy has insulted our country and it's people on numerous occasions, it's hard to just let it go. I was serious when I asked him about his passion, but I guess I couldn't blame him when he turtled, he probably thought I was setting him up for something. Problem is, he's too easy. Accepting a guest pass from a player is inappropriate, period.

All my posts are still available for reading. I'd like to see just one of those posts where I insulted Canada and Canadians.

From Wayne state Board of governors meeting march 2011

The athletic "director mentioned ―W‖ Day, a weeklong celebration of the accomplishments of women athletics, paying special attention to the era when there were not opportunities for women to compete."

Way to go

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

No beer was served {:< ( So true about the hockey culture here in Motown. Just across the river in Windsor....THAT'S where the hawkey madness really begins. (Interestingly, not at the university level, though. They must take their edumacation seriously..) To me, the prospect of hockey at WSU, while kinda neat, was a bit of a head-scratcher. Basically a commuter college. A good chunk of the students are part-timers who have jobs, families and mortgages. No rink on campus. I mean, if you drive by on a typical football Saturday, their 6,000 (six) seat stadium/field is about 1/3 full..and they've been winning! I think 10 and 2 last year. Not a real surprise but really bummed for those girls.
Yeah, WSU football has been pretty darn good as of late. They've had a running back who was pretty much just lightning in a bottle. And the kid even managed to make it to a few NFL camps last year, think he ended up the year in New Orleans. A whole lot of GLIAC football fans were glad to see him go on to the NFL, because then he was causing less nightmares for our Defensive Coordinators.

To me thought, one of the things that has always hurt attendence at WSU, mostly at their football games, but at other events as well, was their total lack of a marching band there. Having a band around adds just so much more atmostsphere to any game. And heck, it can easily improve attendence. Not only can you count the band menbers, but they are likely to invite their friends, and family members to games as well. I would wager that a 50 member Marching band should be able to improve attendence at a football game by about 200.

Now, how does that relate to hockey? well, Marching Band during football gives the band kids a good time to come together, to become friends with their fellow band mates. Then, later on when the Marching Band kids break off into smaller pep bands for basketball and hockey games, then they've got a larger pool of friends that are a little more likely to show up for more of the games as well..
Correct mostly a commuter college, even with the med school, people live else where. Last year was good for football but they did not make the playoffs and are up and down in the GLIAC. The women's team was not promoted well, and it's not like they really needed an on campus rink. The rink was close enough, seemed to work well, and others used it so the word could have been spread.

Curious now as to why they didn't fold the women's team when they did the men's? Wonder if there are any Title IX implications?

Wayne's at 33,000+ I believe, and yeah, a lot of them are commuters. Still , with a little more effort, you would think that they would be able to do better with getting attendence there at games. Personally, I think they should add lights to their field, and have a few night games as well. It probably wouldn't hurt to try to get a DPS game of the week there every friday night as well. They've got a pretty nice field turf there, so they would be able to do it.

You don't want to hear the facts, maybe you should keep your mouth shut with your infantile disparaging personal attacks full of nothing but yourself and misinformation. I'll pray that someday your brain develops beyond the level of a four year old.QUOTE]

your not the boss of me... :D

I find these flame wars wasteful of my time, and tremendously annoying.

But that was funny!

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

It's a sad day indeed. The AD could have picked a better time to give all involved a better chance to find a home.

Like earlier, they recently came out with their 2011-12 schedule. lol kinda strange timing to have the team preparing for a season... then "ooops sorry we're ending the program".

Although it's not the same, is there any plans for Wayne State to compete in the ACHA, women's club hockey is shrinking after moves by Syracuse a few years ago, then Lindenwood and Penn State. Travel is easier because there's more women's club hockey in Michigan than NCAA women's hockey.

Everyone should look back to post #23 of this thread and sign the petition. These exceptional girls are putting up a fight to keep this team. Every American that comes to this site should help out, and pass it on to at least ten of their friends. If you read the news reports about this situation, these kids deserve better, as they have represented the city of Detroit well and have worked hard in the community and in their studies. They are what their government preaches. They are proud, please help them out. There could be considerable fallout from this situation. :)

In this case the pen will not be mightier than the sword. However the power of the purse will trump all.

Sayonara - Wayne State

I don't get the shock of the players about this announcement!!! The woman's program was doomed when the men's program folded. They started off on the right foot with
Bill Wilkerson as coach and a well-healed alum, Pete Karmanos, supporting a fund raising campaign to build a new rink.

I think we all knew WSU's women's program would eventually see the same conclusion as the men's team but the shock is that with the men's program there was a longer timetable given prior to the final season. WSU recently announced the 2011-12 captains then schedule, then BAM!!! No program.

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

Not going to happen. Read NCAA 2010-100. If you were playing up in 2010/11, you can continue to play up. Otherwise, no.

First and foremost, I'm sorry to hear that Wayne St. will no longer field a women's team. Anytime a program folds up, especially in the fashion this one did, it impacts literally hundreds of very good people, who now find themselves in a terrible situation of having to make hurried decisions, find new schools, etc. It's truly terrible.

As for RIT women's hockey going DI, that is what the school wants and they made a formal announcement to that effect at the same time they announced plans for a new arena on campus. The school has every intention of putting in the official application. The NCAA has already informed the school of its intention to reject the application. The athletic director and the president of the school have already acknowledged that the school is working with lawyers to discuss their options and to potentially challenge the NCAA's position, should they ultimately deny the application. I also understand that another school, that is in the same boat as RIT, has also contacted the school regarding being a party to the legal challenge. While it is kind of off the radar in general right now, RIT going DI in women's hockey is far from dead at this point.

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

Expect to see more of this in the next few years for both men's and women's program at public universities. If the program is not self-funding, it will be looked at closely in terms of where the support money goes when the scholarship money is coming directly out of the AD budget. Someone sees it in terms of state tax payer money going to international players...and the program is in trouble. It will be a blow to the game, at least in terms of numbers of programs. It will also favor private colleges that will have a deeper pool of players to choose from if public colleges are forced to tone down international player scholarships.

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

Sorry to see any program dropped, but this is probably the first of many to come. I think womens hockey at nearly every school is the most vulnerable ... then mens hockey at about 10 schools.

It's really for another thread but I've been saying similar things about RIT, NCAA rules clearly prohibit it. Their only option is to elevate the entire athletic department to NCAA DII or DI to allow for women's hky to play at the National Collegiate level.

Hopefully RIT or another program will be added, This summer Lindenwood and Penn State announced intentions to move from the ACHA to NCAA but the Wayne State situation is a step back.

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

D1 at RIT is a very dead issue for RIT and they know it.
What exactly is the rationale that the NCAA gives for their irrational dislike for play-ups? It makes no sense to me. I think the NCAA's response to RIT is going to be "You have a title IX problem? All you have to do is send your men back to DIII, and it will go away."

The philosophy of D-III athletics is centered around athletic participation as part of a well-rounded education, while D-I promotes a more focused emphasis of competition in one sport. I believe that the D-III schools themselves feel that it is somewhat contradictory to such a philosophy to then offer a sport that places a D-I level importance on competition at an otherwise D-III institution.

However, not all schools have such a cut-and-dry opinion about athletics. There is a gamut between of philosophies between those extrema. I am sure that you remember the fight against the D-III proposal 8 years ago which would have banned D-III playups from offering athletic scholarships. http://board.uscho.com/showthread.php?28348-Petition-against-DivIII-changes&daysprune=-1

It really isn't that big of an overall operating cost from D3 to D2. As long as you got a few good backers with deep pockets, RIT could afford to go D2. Just that RIT's only problem there's not really that great of a league in D2 right now for them to go to. I would think that the PSAC would be the closest one to them, or with a good share of their schools close to them. The PSAC is now taking private schools in, see Gannon and Mercyhurst, but NY teams as well, CW Post. Just the biggest problem for RIT with the PSAC would be that the PSAC is pretty full and crowded at the moment.
