Wayne State discontinues women's hockey

Wayne State announced today that it has discontinued its women's hockey program, effective immediately, a result of "continuing reductions in state appropriations to higher education."

The move comes three years after the school dropped its men's hockey program and decided to continue operating the only NCAA Division I women's hockey program in the state.

Wayne State director of athletics Rob Fournier, who was tasked with cutting more than $250,000 from his department, recommended cutting the team with the largest budget. There may also be cuts in administrative staff in the future.

"Simple economics," Fournier said of the decision to end the women's hockey program. "It's our most expensive operating sport. It was even more expensive than football. So for basically 23 kids we were spending a majority of our operating dollars."
Fournier said the women's hockey team's budget was about $250,000, a large chunk of that due to its travel budget.

The football program, which has more than 100 student-athletes, has a budget of about $175,000.

Women's hockey coach Jim Fetter said he was surprised by the news.

"I had no idea this was coming," Fetter said. "I know we had talked about some cuts in the athletic department, but yeah, I just got blindsided.

"We've all seen what's going in the state of Michigan with the economy. With the cuts in higher education being 20%, it obviously affected us in the athletic department, as it has in all the other departments at the school. It's unfortunate it's my program, our program, the women's program that is being let go. What can you say? When there's no money, there's no money. That's the way our economy is today."

Fournier said existing scholarships will be honored. Those who wish to transfer can do so without having to sit out a season.

Fetter said a few players have indicated a desire to continue their education at the university. Fetter said his first priority is to find the others a place to play, whether it is in Division I or Division 3.

Fournier said eliminating football was not considered for a number of reasons.

"We've just put in turf; we've fixed up the locker room; we've just won a divisional title," Fournier said. "We've got people now engaged in coming out. We've now picked up some momentum, and we've got our own facility here on campus....

"We're the only college football team in the city of Detroit. We have 93 years of football history here."

The women's hockey team compiled a 138-209-29 (.406) in 12 seasons.

"The WSU Women's Hockey Program was cut and announced on 5-26-11. As a team and staff, we were notified on the same day, without any warning. We were speechless. Without wanting to be anywhere else but here, we figure we ought to find a way to fight.

WSU hockey has not only touched its members and alumni, but thousands in the university and the community. This program embodied every characteristic of excellence Wayne State and the athletic department fosters. These women were leaders academically, in the community and on the ice.

We are fighting to get recognized by the athletic department. The cut came as a result of reduced state funding to higher education institutions. It is a sad day when quality education programs get cut as a means of pouring more money into a counter-productive prison system. Eliminating this program rejects the values of female student athletes who believe in the promise of a better Detroit, a better Michigan and a better world.

Please join us in making a statement and raising awareness to get funding back for our program, so we can continue what we started out to do."

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

Anyone care to estimate the potential effect...or fallout that could possibly result from situations like that of Findlay, and now Wayne State, along with departures like Quinni etc. etc. might have on new / start up programs considering becoming a CHA member? I wouldn't think these type of situations would encourage say, OSU jumping to the CHA as some have speculated in the past. Penn St.?

Step backward obviously. Bid implications. Quinni, what do they have to do with it?

In California we had a similar problem at UC Berkeley. Last year they eliminated rugby, women's lacrosse, men's gymnastics and baseball. They said if they would raise X amount of dollars per sport the would re-consider re-instating the sports. All sports raised enough money to be re-instated. So it sounds like it is all about $. So ask the AD how much money would they have to raise to re-instate the sport. The auto industry is making a come back. Maybe they could be the first one's asked? Just a thought.

Also, Quinni is going no where as they have a very viable men's ice hockey program and the women's program is on an up swing.

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

Quinni, what do they have to do with it?

In 2004-05, the Quinnipiac Bobcats joined College Hockey America. After one year in the CHA, the Bobcats joined the ECAC and have been there ever since.

The bid implications and general movement in the wrong direction are the obvious ramifications. The inquiry was more geared towards opinions of long term affects and whether these multiple occurrances could contribute...or lead to the failure of the CHA to ever reach the number of teams to obtain that auto-bid.

Contribute, I am an optimist. We'll see. :)

Like CanHG an optimist. One step backwards will hopefully lead to two steps forward :)

Well yes, I think all would agree hopefully. Unfortunately if your counting, there has been more than one step backwards in the CHA history. Historically, not a tremendous amount of stability...which is where / why one could imagine some difficulty in achieving the auto-bid threshold.

Your... my goodness Brooky, I'm shocked. All kidding aside, "your" league is the best. :) We certainly would not want to go "backward". Trust me, I'm just as bad.

Re: Sayonara - Wayne State

Always sad to see a program go, but hell, one would have needed to think that they should have seen this coming right after WSU dropped Men's hockey. Politically, it would have been really bad to drop both of the programs at the same time. Dropping men's hockey first made it easier politically, but just prolonged a lot of suffering. Honestly, Women's team probably should have been working on getting enough individual funding and endowments to insulate themselves from being cut. If it was self funded, not from the Athletic department, then there really wouldn't have been a need to cut Women's Hockey at WSU, and would have helped to keep the dream alive of bringing back the men's program as well.

One thing, the football team was Co-champions of the South Division of the GLIAC, and somebody at WSU commissioned a trophy for them to celebrate with, after their last regular season game. That means it was made before the game.

And as for the bold part there, clearly thats the one thing thats contributed the most to WSU dropping Hockey with the lack of an effort in getting ice facilities on campus.
