Re: Sayonara - Wayne State
You can always argue anything in filing a suit but the great majority of the caselaw that I have read has ruled against the plaintiff when contractual arguments are made to extend scholarships beyond 1 year. The NCAA and most if not all schools clearly state that scholarships are for one year only and a renewal procedure is generally clearly stated. Now maybe Wayne State can out of some sense of fairness provide the athlete with other financial accommodations but I don't think they will get a "athletic" scholarship beyond this upcoming year for a sport that no longer exists at the university. There might be some type of due process argument to be made here but again I don't see a claim for damages when the scholarships are being honored for 2011-2012. Regardless, I think you are talking about an expensive endeavor for all if this goes to court.
Generally (and I believe in this case also), the athletes that have scholarships are honored for the rest of their 4 years at the school. So the current freshman can finish out college under whatever scholarship arrangement they had with WSU.
