RIT used to play here.

Re: RIT used to play here.

Tough way to go down especially after a referee error and bouncing one of the crossbar that had the goalie beat just minutes later.

I'm assuming your referring to the "goal after the whistle"? If so, here's my view of it:

There was delayed penalty being called against Miami (a good call, too). When the goalie made the initial save, it went off his chest, and then he attempted to clear it away by kicking it with the pad. As soon as he touched it with that pad, he (a Miami player) had played the puck, and thus play was dead due to the delayed penalty. Does it suck for Michigan? Yes. But would the Michigan team want the Ref to do his job THAT well (IMO, the only good officiating moment of the game) if the roles were reversed? You bet your ***!

Re: RIT used to play here.

It is beyond me how anyone in the DIII universe can not be pulling for RIT at this time???

The kid is from New York and claims to be a Michigan fan. That should tell you about everything you need to know.

Now, I'm from Wisconsin and initially thought I'd pull for UW over RIT but now I'm not so sure. Oddly, I'm not sure I'll know where my allegiances lie until my gut points one way or another come puck drop.

Aside from that, I most certainly wanted RIT to smash DU and UNH.

Re: RIT used to play here.

DIII rivalries are one thing, but bitterness in the face of outstanding accomplishment is quite another matter.Go RIT!

In Prez's defense, Elmira would probably have a National Title or two if it hadn't been for RIT getting in the way. There was, and to a great extent still is, a fair amount of bad blood between these two teams.

The all-time record of 31-30-4 in favor of RIT speaks wonders.
The fact that each team had a habit of winning when the other team needed the W the most says even more.

Re: RIT used to play here.

Clearly you don't understand what the Elmira/RIT rivalry was then.

That was a great rivalry. But it also was then.

There's a whole crop of RIT hockey fans who have no clue who Elmira even is. And while for many RIT fans there's still a feeling for that rivalry, for many others, it has faded to a distant memory.

And for others, that dislike has merely been transferred toward Canisius.

If you think M'ville and Elmira are rivals, that didn't hold a candle to what EC/RIT had.

Prez,

I understand and remember the rivalry as well as you do. Heck I hated EC so much I wouldn't let my daughter wear purple. Then RIT moves to DI, and my son goes to Elmira for his masters. I went to his graduation and didn't even feel like I had to disinfect myself when it was over. :) I looked all over campus even, and couldn't find the tractor parking lot. I even root for EC in the playoffs after Utica is eliminated. Which has been way too soon the last couple of years.

It's time to let the old prejudices fade. Heck, the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association now has Japanese members. If they can let go of the hatred, so can you. :)

Anyway, I distinctly remember a post where you said that you'd root for RIT as long as they weren't playing a DIII team. Of course maybe that was P&G10 that said that. I always get the two of you confused.

BTW, What the heck are you doing in G'ville??? I figured when I married my wife I was pretty sure I took the last good thing out of that town.:D

Re: RIT used to play here.

My kids really enjoyed the weekend and begged me to let them sit with the RIT fans on Friday (so I did). They begged me to get RIT jerseys (next Rochester trip) and then begged to go back on Saturday (we did).

It was great hockey and you could really tell who the "uptight" teams were. The best line was an RPI fan who told us Denver had 14 draft picks on their roster and RIT had 0. Perfect. I guess UNH may have also had a draft pick advantage.

I also read the D&C stories on-line and it looks like the writer that covered the tournament was into it, even if his editors might not be. Tough to be a one-paper town. People in Albany are lucky.

Good luck in Detroit.

The new crop doesn't know who Elmira is because those students only know RIT as a Division I team and nothing else. It has been five years. Only the people that attended during the time they were Division III or still live in Rochester.

I certainly respect everything RIT has done this year and my hat is off to them but I'm sorry...too many bad memories to bring myself to root for the team.

RIT broke my heart more than the Bills and Mets ever could all those years they ended Elmira's season.

You guys would seriously cheer for Elmira if they were in the National Championship eh?

Lets just say I hope we get to see the day that happens and I'll personally outfit the RIT crew with purple and gold jerseys if ever occurs.

EDIT: I will say my next goal is to work in the Rochester area whether it be for Sports Information or for the D&C. Maybe you'll have a much better chance to finally break my purple and gold blood down then :)

I guess I can see where the Prez is coming from and I will grant him an exception as he certainly is no bandwagon jumper.I find the underdog too much of an attraction to cheer for especially when it's a dog you once played with.

Re: RIT used to play here.

I was thinking more along these lines....

Hey Lama, how about a little something, you know, for the effort....?

Re: RIT used to play here.

Why not? I root for that whole league when it's NCAA time.

I'm a Plattsburgh fan, but I root for Oswego against everyone except Plattsburgh, Potsdam & Morrisville - then the rest of the SUNYAC, then the ECAC-West, then those crummy schools from Vermont ;)

Re: RIT used to play here.

The flip side is once all the hoopla dies down the team can refocus and prepare for meeting Wisconsin (who incidently will be on RIT's schedule in 2 years I believe). They are beatable, but it will take RIT bringing their 'A' game.

One this is for sure, the Wisconsin fans don't seem to be thinking the game will be easy. I'm sure the Badger players will be the same way.

I don't think anybody's expecting this game to be easy. They certainly brought their 'A' game to Albany, and I'd go so far as to say their 'A' game can beat ANYBODY right now. If both teams bring their A game, we're in for a really entertaining hockey game. Whoever wins this game on Thursday (I'll be rooting for RIT) will be the one I root for on Saturday. I can't bring myself to root for a team with "Boston" in its name, and I just all-around dislike Miami.

The sad part is, I think there is a strong possibility that RIT will still be vastly underestimated in Detroit. I'd say this is a good Frozen Four... any of these Four teams are capable of winning it all. And again, RIT is trying to complete the Divisional Trifecta... who wouldn't want to watch THAT happen? ;)
