>>> RIT Tigers 2011-12 -- Now then, where were we? <<<

Re: >>> RIT Tigers 2011-12 -- Now then, where were we? <<<

As far as I know, the official position on this continues to be: "Not a matter of if we are going D-I but when." When is still TDB.

And just because a team goes D-I, it does not mean it will keep all of its players. The men's team cut 4-5 players from the returning roster when it went D-I and probably kept a few seniors who were over their heads around out of loyalty and because it was a transition year. The team that won the AHA regular season title two years into the move was made up of less than half of the former D-III players, while that freshman class were seniors when the team went to the Frozen Four. A vast change in talent.

Chris,
As a longtime supporter of both teams you've failed to mention that when the men's team was moved up to D1, they certainly were not a high caliber D3 team and were struggling to get out of their own conference let alone be NCAA contenders. Different story for the women as they are proving again that they are going to be a contender in March.
Now I'm not saying there won't be players cut but these players have played and experienced games that their male counter parts never came close to experiencing during their transition out of D3.

Easy on that talk. I would hardly call RIT struggling to get out of their own conference. Sure they had a down year in their final year of DIII but that was by far an anomaly rather than the norm. RIT had been at the forefront of DIII hockey for well over a decade and a national powerhouse year in and year out

That's exactly my point, RIT mens were clearly on the way down during their last two seasons of D3. Both 13 win seasons, certainly not typical RIT. And that's why players from those teams were cut when they moved up. RIT women on the other hand aren't in the same boat.

BTW, keep up the good work on the stories for women's D3.

Maybe they have and those that need to know already do?

And I agree with another poster that RIT personnel have been nothing but honest with respect to this situation. I say this from first hand experience.

Touche!

Re: >>> RIT Tigers 2011-12 -- Now then, where were we? <<<

Most likely in the next year or two. IMO, the school is waiting to see what happens with Hockey Easy. If HEA takes RPI or any other school from the ECAC then RIT will apply to the ECAC for both men and women, which the ECAC would like since all 12 schools in the conference now play both men and women's. Now if HEA goes with an non-ECAC school like Holy Cross or UConn and the men have to stay in the AHA for now, the women would most likely apply to the CHA. The CHA would be a good fit geographically and the men already play in the same league as current CHA members Mercyhurst, Robert Morris and Niagara. I believe that RIT has gotten assurances from the NCAA that they can move up, even if they are of the wink-wink, nudge-nudge variety. I think RIT is just waiting to see what happens on the men's side before making a decision for the women when there is no rush to do so. Plus they know the men's stuff will be cleared up in the next year so it is not even that long of a wait.

That is a lot of speculation. Why would RPI leave the ECAC ?. And is HEA expanding ?. Holy Cross tried to get into the ECAC before, so they might get that spot before RIT.

If RIT is indeed going D1, would it not make more sense for them to join the CHA?. Closer for travel, and a chance to be competitive with several of those programs right away.

BTW...Did they start that new rink yet ?.

Not yet, they are still a bit shy on the $15mil goal. They did just complete a major reno onto Ritter c/w 2 massive change rooms for Men's and Women's. Women's room is as nice as you will see at any level.

As I am to understand, the rooms are identical to each other. I was surprised at the extent of the reno's given that the new arena was in the works. It was explained that the dressing rooms and offices will be used by the Lacrosse teams when the hockey ops move to the new arena and that the time frame for the new arena is for the start of the 2014 season.

Good road trip for the Lady Tigers, going 4-0 :)

Big weekend up in Plattsburgh for the Ladies! Should be two good ones.

But next weekend at the Ritter should be an exciting weekend as well.
RIT Women's Hockey Pay Tribute the the United States Armed Forces

Those uniforms look amazing!

EDIT: Here's the online auction website: Wounded Warriors Project

Well done Ladies!

I was wondering if they were going to do something like this again last year like they did with the black out heart disease weekend against Plattsburgh. You can't beat the set-up and personable photos on the auction.

Great work RIT. I'm sure you'll see a large amount of donations again this year.

Re: >>> RIT Tigers 2011-12 -- Now then, where were we? <<<

I'm glad they got the loss out of their system now to a good Plattsburgh team.

I bet there is some major refocusing in Tiger land this weekend. The talent is clearly there. I'll be interested to see how they bounce back this weekend and then they'll get another big test with Elmira twice in a few weeks too.

I don't think refocusing is needed. When it comes to when RIT, Plattsburgh, and Elmira play each other you'd be better off flipping a coin to decide who wins. Theses are the games all three teams circle on the schedule since it will most likely be one of their toughest games all season.

True. I just think that maybe RIT got lulled into a fall sense of security/sleep with only playing a handful of games against good teams (Norwich/Amherst) and came into Plattsburgh to play a team that had a major chip on their shoulder that needed a marquee win.

The only reason I disagree with this statement is because they play each other every year so they've come to know what to "expect" from each other. I think it was more of a we can't lose attitude, almost like an arrogance.

Fair enough. :)

Re: >>> RIT Tigers 2011-12 -- Now then, where were we? <<<

All we need now is to see how RIT plays against Elmira. I'll save all my possible worry till after those games.
