>>> RIT Tigers 2011-12 -- Now then, where were we? <<<

Re: >>> RIT Tigers 2011-12 -- Now then, where were we? <<<

No team will leave the ECAC until the 13-14 season. That's because Notre Dame (and anyone accompanying them, if there is such a team) is joining the HEA for the 13-14 season.

I know nothing will happen until 13-14, but what I am really wondering is whether or not RIT would screw the CHA over by leaving after one year if the opportunity came up to join the ECAC (not that I'm saying it will, but the possibility is still there).

You got me curious......Did I miss something big ?

Are you suggesting Notre Dame is adding both Men's and Women's Hockey for 13-14 ?.
R we talking about the Fighting Irish school from the Mid West ?

I'm sorry. I missed the "or one year" and just wanted to point out that they would not be leaving the CHA before playing in it.

In my biased opinion (grew up in Rochester, attended RPI), I believe that either RPI or Quinnipiac will be leaving the ECAC for Hockey East and will start playing in that association in the 2014-15 season and RIT will be very strongly considered as a replacement for the ECAC. It is almost a certainty that any men's team joining the ECAC will also have to have a women's team.

The "anyone accompanying them" part refers to an unknown at this time 12th team.

There is no certainty that HEA will have 12 teams in the conference for the 2013-14 season. They may play with 11 for one (or more) season(s).

I was not intending to imply anything about Notre Dame's women's team (which I now realize was silly, since this is the women's sub-forum).

I wouldn't worry too much. I was told by a well placed source in both the CHA and AHA that there will be "massive change," on both the men's and women's sides, in the very near future.

To me, that would mean one of two things:
1. The CHA and the AHA merge and compete under one banner, most likely the AHA or
2. The AHA splits and the western pod becomes the men's division of the CHA and the AHA is the eastern pod with all the cost containment they desire.

Scenario 2 seems more "massive" to me but Scenario 1 wouldn't shock me at all but is not really "massive"

I would be very surprised if Air Force is interested in any scenario that has it playing in a conference that does not include Army.

I've come up with a couple scenarios to go around this:

1: CHA(AHA-West) and AHA(AHA-East) have an agreement that teams have to play each other at least once a year
2a: CHA gives AHA Canisius in favor of Army
2b: AHA gives CHA Holy Cross in favor of Air Force

Re: >>> RIT Tigers 2011-12 -- Now then, where were we? <<<

I have a question and I appologize if it's already been addressed, but is RIT eligible to give scholarships next year, or only beginning the year they actually play DI, 2014-2015? And, if this has been common knowledge for a year or two, was this used as a recruiting tool for the coaches, promising scholarships to incoming freshman in a year or two.

They are not eligible to give scholorships at all unless they a) Move all the rest of their programs up to at least D2 or b) Get the NCAA to make another exception for them.

How hard could it be for RIT to move D2? I would think conferences would be begging for RIT.

There are few conferences that make some sense geographically but it most likely comes down to money. Does RIT want to spend the money moving up the whole program just so the hockey teams can give scholarships? I think they want to see how well they can compete without them at D1 for both teams, and if the teams struggle for 5-10 years and scholarships are the key reason maybe they will reconsider. I also think they going to try and get a waiver to give the hockey teams scholarships. It is mentioned in Ed's article about the NCAA legislation RIT got pushed through.

D-III is thriving compared to D-II, and there just aren't many D-II schools in upstate New York. Roberts Wesleyan is going D-II in the fall (joining the NCAA for the first time), but other than that the nearest D-II school is, I think, Mercyhurst.

Looking it up, Le Moyne in Syracuse is D-II; Mercyhurst and Gannon are in Erie, 5 hours away; after that you're looking at the Pennsylvania state colleges. The other New York schools are all off to the east or southeast.

I don't really see the problem. Look at Atlantic Hockey for the men. They travel to Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and as far as Colorado every year. They willingly took on games in Vermont and Wisconsin. Having to go to eastern NY schools and Pennsylvania schools doesn't seem like much of a prohibiting factor.

I didn't mean to imply it was a financial obstacle (though busing all 24 athletic teams that far with regularity is different than busing the hockey teams that far with regularity; and even the hockey teams have some close-by road trips to help mitigate the longer ones). It's more of a conceptual one. Fans around here are familiar with D-III and D-I schools, but there are so few D-II schools upstate that it doesn't register on the collective radar.

But yeah, I kinda think it matters to have schools that people in your city have heard of before in your conference. Even if it's just two or three.

Once again drawing from Atlantic Hockey..not a lot of big names there, still manages to be successful. People will know LeMoyne from proximity, and Mercyhurst from hockey. I don't have a list of other D2 schools in front of me, but I find it hard to believe they are less well known than D3 schools across the board.

I didn't say they had to be big names, but come on... when Atlantic Hockey was first being promoted around here, who did all the PR mention most prominently? Army and Air Force, or American International and Bentley?

Local college sports fans are more aware of D-III because UR, SJF, Naz, Brockport, Geneseo, and Hobart/William Smith are all D-III. Maybe nationally, D-II schools are better known, but not locally here in Rochester.
