Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

So its pretty clear to me now that athletes should not be allowed to use Twitter without supervision.

Indeed. So stupid.

I had a thought after listening to talk radio today...how huge, after their mission was completed, is that adrenaline rush for the SEALS? Man that had to be one hell of a feeling.

Odds are no one will ever know the identity of the man who pulled the trigger. I'll bet they're keeping that under wraps for classification reasons, and probably for their own protection. It'll be kinda like Deep Throat, only revealed posthumously.

It'd kinda suck to get OBL and have no one be able to thank you properly. Even any ceremonies for awards you'd win would have to be done in secret. Probably a CMoH coming their way that they'll never get to wear.

Wonder what pithy one-liner the trigger man came up with. Hope he made it a good one.

That map will be amazing. I hope you have to shoot your way in (like the Seals had to) Go room to room, floor to floor, but on the way out have the Pakistani (or whatever its called in the game) close in on you as you are leaving. I also hope it involves a cut scene of a burial at sea.

The guys who do this sort of thing aren't in it for personal glory. In fact, a guy who IS in it for personal glory would be washed out. They're team players. Mission oriented. And knowing they fulfilled their mission, with no casualties, in their minds, is reward enough. Not to quibble here, what they did does not qualify for Medals of Honor (there is no "congressional") it simply does not rise to the standard of "above and beyond the call of duty." More likely Navy Crosses, richly deserved. As far as recognition is concerned, their situation is analogous to the wall of stars at the CIA. Each star represents a fallen hero, but we don't know their identities nor the circumstances of their deaths.

These guys are professionals in every sense of the word. You won't find them getting into fights and breaking up bars. Guys like that would also be washed out. You're dealing with some of the most closely held secrets we have and with training that would tire out most people just reading about it. And mental toughness that in other contexts would be scary. These are very special people. I read a great description of their mission: "find the tallest guy in the room and shoot him." Mission accomplished.

I know the parents of a SEAL team 6 member - he's one proud papa. :) Since your average terrorist is too much of a chickensh* to go after a SEAL I hope for the sake of the team's relatives their identities are never made public.

I don't see how any rational human being can argue with the disposing of the body. Lindsey Graham must be sucking on the funny stuff again.

It was a tactically brilliant decision. The house should be destroyed, too.

I've had this rolling around in my head since Sunday night. I know, old fashioned flag waving is so passe. I'm hopeless in that regard. Still, this captures the moment for me. Just remember, this great lady never had a singing lesson.

That is a very poor choice. Seriously. They don't call them Native Americans for nothin. The first gaffe of the campaign.

Whether Obama handpicked the name or not is a big unknown.

I seriously doubt the CIC picks operational names like that. I expect the force commander just picks something. Probably never expected even that to get published.

With most SEALs missions, most of these details never come out. If they do, it's 25 years later on the Military Channel, then five years after that on the History Channel.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

The administration has said it was a pretty long time after. At any rate, the length of time doesn't really matter. What people don't seem to understand about waterboarding is that it's not a scenario in which you pour water down someone's throat while yelling questions at them. It's a technique designed to turn uncooperative detainees into cooperative ones. In the kase of KSM, I'd say it worked pretty darn well.

I've heard at least two different analysts claim they believe the most pertinent intel came from the "soft" FBI approach rather than the "hard-core" CIA approach. Doesn't matter because you and I will never know. But I suppose it does provide a talking point for those (on either side) more interested in, "I told you so" rather than, "We finally got the mother fukker".

Kudos to everyone involved in the operation. I only wish the bastard had a bit more time to suffer before meeting his demise.

Great link Old Pio, thanks for sharing.

Or in the most recent Flynn or Clancy novel. ;)

Any other Twin Cities residents hear Vince Flynn with Sooch yesterday? I guess Bush was a big fan and had invited Flynn to the White House several times. During one of his last visits they were in The President's private study off the Oval Office when Flynn noticed a Glock on the credenza. When has asked Bush about it The President replied, "it's a little present from the Delta boys, it's the gun Saddam had on him when they dragged his *** out of the rathole" Good stuff. :)

Its only a gaffe if you are a grievance artist like yourself.

Wiki...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geronimo#Biography

During his career as a war chief, Geronimo was notorious for consistently urging raids and war upon Mexican Provinces and their various towns, and later against American locations across Arizona, New Mexico, and western Texas

Sounds like a comparison to OBL may actually be apt.... but i guess he's a hero to an oppressed minority... hey, just like Osama bin Laden... or so muslims would have you believe.

"Grievance artist." Perfect. Wish I'd thought of it. Sorta reminds me of the old joke: Shrink is administering the ink blot test. And with each one the patient describes increasingly more lurid sexual activities. Shrnk concludes the test, tells the guy he's got the worst sexual mania he's ever encountered. Guy says: "I've got a sexual mania? You're the one who's be showing me the dirty pictures."

I can't take credit, but its nice term.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

As for the Geronimo thing, this may be why (direct from the Star Tribune link):

He eluded capture for nearly three decades.

Just sayin'.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

People who think codename Geronimo is offensive are just looking for controversy to complain.
People who think OBL is still alive are also looking for controversy to complain.

My favorite is that Obama would never order the killing of a foreigner on foreign soil. Really? Candidate Obama said he'd do exactly that and everyone from Hillary Clinton to Sean Hannity accused him of declaring war on Pakistan.
I also enjoy that the explosion in Kabul was immediate proof that OBL was alive. It turns out that whoever it was blew up the equivalent of a vacant lot. How scary!

The White House shouldn't bother to release the photo(s) because the conspiracy theorists won't shut up anyway (the picture is photoshopped, you know?) and it's bound to be gruesome and I don't think too many people really want to look at it. I'm happy just knowing he's dead. I don't need a picture and I'd rather not have that image burned into my brain. It's going to be virtually impossible to avoid if it is released.

Imagine the uproar if the code name had been George Washington, I mean, that ******* was willing to murder you on christmas morning when any reasonable person was holed up for the winter.

It does make sense as Brent pointed out, Geronimo did elude capture (for way longer than Osama), but there are plenty of people the code name could have been, and the same people dismissing this would have been falling over themselves to see who could be more outraged.

Couldn't agree more. We've had the argument. And apparantly we're not going to waterboard any more. I'm sorry to always relate things to movie scenes. But in "Day of the Jackal," the courier for the French bad guys who want to assassinate DeGaulle is captured and tortured. In his agony, he utters the word "chacal," and the plot begins to unravel. I don't care how we got there. We got there. And some mightly persistent brilliant people made it possible for some mighty brave dedicated people to blow his fukkin brains all over the wall.

I want to see those photos. And I want to see them now.

Uh, did you read what I wrote? The "hard-core" CIA approach is designed precisely to soften uncooperative detainees sufficiently for the "soft" approach (which, it ought to be noted, some people still have problems with) to work. The "hard-core" approach is not supposed to produce the answers. It's supposed to enable interrogators to get the answers later.Read this. Pre-waterboarding, uncooperative KSM. Post-waterboarding, KSM is leading "terrorist tutorials". Could it have been due to a simple change of heart or perhaps the cafeteria getting his favorite brand of ice cream? Sure, I suppose. I'm not hanging my hat on that theory though.

You are of course correct in saying we will never know. I do think it rises above mere "talking point" status though. I mean, KSM isn't going to be the last scumbag we capture; don't you think we ought to know the best way to deal with such detainees going forward? As much as it may look like it, it's not a mere dick measuring contest.
