Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

How many of those do you think are sarcastic questions?

My guess would be: all. I don't think the author is familiar with adolescents' need to be caustic about everything.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

I've heard at least two different analysts claim they believe the most pertinent intel came from the "soft" FBI approach rather than the "hard-core" CIA approach. Doesn't matter because you and I will never know. But I suppose it does provide a talking point for those (on either side) more interested in, "I told you so" rather than, "We finally got the mother fukker".

I used to work with a guy who was once an Airborne Ranger. As a Ranger, you go through anti-interrogation training.

He once told me that it is a fact that you get more information out of being nice to your suspect than from any form of harsh interrogation.

He also told me that to get into any special forces (he applied to the Army special forces, but decided to leave the military before they acted on his application), you must be able to speak a second language fluently. His mother was from Spain, so he spoke Spanish.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

So Osama's daughter, taken into custody from the compound awhile after the remaining chopper was full and gone, has told the Pakinstani press that Osama was "captured" alive and unarmed, then shot in the face before being loaded up. I don't doubt it. At that point, who wants to waste time explaining the situation to him if he's dragging his feet or throwing a tantrum? I don't want to say they were looking for anything they could reasonably call resistance, but I wouldn't blame them.

I read something to the effect that with one copter left it was hard to take people out of there alive, so they iced Bin Laden and left the rest behind. Whether that's true or not, the other factor is time. Didn't they have to get out of there as quickly as possible? If that's the case struggling with the guy the whole way out (and you wouldn't know if he was wearing some sort of suicide vest, signal device to call in more of his followers, etc until you searched him) might not have been worth the trouble. Anyway, who cares? It was a military mission and that's the objective.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Oh, you knew this was coming.

The UN Human Rights Commission is also now making noises about the killing. If you're scoring at home that's the same Human Rights Commission that's set to allow Syria to join.

I think of these things like a defense attorney filing motions on behalf of some serial killer. Everybody (particularly the defense attorney) knows the guy is a sociopath who you wouldn't **** on to put out if he was on fire, but we all also agree that there should be institutions that at least go through the motions to see that people's rights are observed.

I think it's good that there is somewhere an organization that make a plea like this, just as I think it's good that having had it put on the record we can all just ignore it.

We probably blew away Osama so that we wouldn't have to bring him to trial and lose him because of a procedural violation. The reasons for protecting that process are still sound, though.

I'd assume he was wearing a few coils of dynamite as a booby trap and just shoot him. Why take a chance like that?

On other matters: Mendenhall's blog

I appreciate those of you who have decided to read this letter and attain a greater understanding of my recent twitter posts. I see how they have gotten misconstrued, and wanted to use this outlet as a way to clear up all things that do not truthfully represent myself, what I stand for personally, and any organization that I am a part of.

First, I want people to understand that I am not in support of Bin Laden, or against the USA. I understand how devastating 9/11 was to this country and to the people whose families were affected. Not just in the US, but families all over the world who had relatives in the World Trade Centers. My heart goes out to the troops who fight for our freedoms everyday, not being certain if they will have the opportunity to return home, and the families who watch their loved ones bravely go off to war. Last year, I was grateful enough to have the opportunity to travel over seas and participate in a football camp put on for the children of US troops stationed in Germany. It was a special experience. These events have had a significant impact in my life.

“What kind of person celebrates death? It's amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We've only heard one side...”

This controversial statement was something I said in response to the amount of joy I saw in the event of a murder. I don’t believe that this is an issue of politics or American pride; but one of religion, morality, and human ethics. In the bible, Ezekiel 33:11 states, “Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways!...”. I wasn’t questioning Bin Laden’s evil acts. I believe that he will have to face God for what he has done. I was reflecting on our own hypocrisy. During 9/11 we watched in horror as parts of the world celebrated death on our soil. Earlier this week, parts of the world watched us in horror celebrating a man’s death.

Nothing I said was meant to stir up controversy. It was my way to generate conversation. In looking at my timeline in its entirety, everything that I’ve said is with the intent of expressing a wide array of ideas and generating open and honest discussions, something I believe we as American citizens should be able to do. Most opinions will not be fully agreed upon and are not meant to be. However, I believe every opinion should be respected or at least given some thought. I apologize for the timing as such a sensitive matter, but it was not meant to do harm. I apologize to anyone I unintentionally harmed with anything that I said, or any hurtful interpretation that was made and put in my name.

It was only meant to encourage anyone reading it to think.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

I thought that you can do whatever you want with unlawful enemy combatants. He wasn't a head of state or anything. He doesn't get to request due process.

Completely agree. If he blows himself up not only do you lose the SEAL team but all the intel they bring back on hard drives etc.

For the tweets, sure. But the Yahoo searches? Were they searching Yahoo sarcastically? Somehow I doubt that. Especially if they had the middle school history education I did, where every year we'd start with the Indians in the 1600s and by the end of May be at around 1840. Then the next year we'd do it all over again.

In my school we were always in the middle of WW1 with one day to go. So 1917 through 1975 was covered like this: "Wilson, Roaring 20's, Great Depression, Ethiopia, Manchuria, Hitler, Poland, Pearl Harbor, Midway, D-Day, Yalta, Bunker Suicide, Enola Gay, McCarthyism, Sputnik, Grassy Knoll, Vietnam, Woodstock, Watergate." And the only question from the whole period on the history final was "Where was the Sudetenland and why was it important?"

I assume it's the same for today's kids, with the addition of "Hostage Crisis, "Tear Down this Wall," Iran-Contra, Solidarity, Glasnost, 1989, Gulf War I, Monica, 9/11, Saddam in a Hole, Black Guy in the White House." And the only question from the whole period on the history final is "What was the Miracle on Ice and why was it important?" In some school districts the alternate question is "what color was OJ's Bronco?"

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

We usually made it to 1970/Vietnam. By then, it was mid-May and everyone was staring out the window wishing they could be outside.

AP US History, I think we got through the Reagan years two weeks before the AP exam.

That was only 2003, but I feel old.

Thanks, now I have Billy Joel stuck in my head.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Good call on not releasing them. However, somehow someway, I have a feeling they will be released at some point through some leak.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

So the president has decided we can't see the photos of OBL's shattered face, citing among his reasons that we don't need to spike the football. It's fine by me that he's prancing around like he's Alexander the Great or Rommel after this triumph. He evidently didn't know where Ground Zero was on 9/11/2009 or 9/11/2010 but he knows where it is NOW and he's going there tomorrow. This is par for the course. George Bush put on a flight suit and landed on a carrier. But BHO is dead wrong about those photos. Those of us who want to see them have an absolute right to do so. And I hope the usual suspects (ACLU and others) who are always filing FOIA suits against Republican administrations will man up here and drag Obama and his worthless Attorney General (who's reluctant to upset the New Black Panther Party) into court to explain why they think the American people are children who might not be able to sleep at night if they saw those photos.

We don't want to upset people in the Arab world who might be upset seeing the broken remains of OBL's head? Fook 'em. Fook 'em 'till they bleed. To believe this nonsene is to believe there are people who wouldn't retaliate against American interests based on our claims we killed Bin Laden, but seeing the pictures? Well, that's a whole different matter, and they're strapping on explosives and heading to an orphanage. Besides, the photos would make it tougher to argue he's still alive.

This administration, this president, did something important in executing Bin Laden. Now, with their dithering and back tracking over just how the events unfolded on the third floor and this nonsense about releasing the photos, they're reminding us why so many of us think Obama is a weak sister. I don't care if the SEALs killed OBL by hacking him to pieces or by inserting a grenade in his rectum (actually, I rather like that one). We weren't going to bring him back for trial. We were going to kill him. "You kill 3,000 of us, we're going to kill you."

As I've already posted: those pictures belong to the American people. We've paid for them in blood and treasure. And those of us who wish to see them (I'm thinking of a T, BTW) should be able to do so. Where's that p*rick Julian Assange when you really need him?

the stridency of your request for the snuff photos is... interesting.

What's the old joke: Football coach has been teaching American history up to 1900 and is reassigned to teach it from 1900 to the present. He's excited, because he's anxious "to see how it turned out"

Pi*s off with your psuedo psychological arguments. Why don't you try refusing what I argued rather than attacking me? Must defend Obama. Must defend Obama. Bollocks.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Why do so many football coaches teach history? I switched from being a history major a few years in to school. When people asked why, I usually responded with "I don't like football enough to coach it."
