Emergency officials responded today to reports of white powdery substances being found at two government buildings in Boston, but no injuries have been reported so far, and in one case, initial tests indicated the powder was not dangerous.
The substances were found at Attorney General Martha Coakley's office at One Ashburton Place, a state office building, and the JFK federal office building, both in the downtown area.
Authorities responded to Ashburton Place at 11:58 a.m. to investigate a powder found on the 20th floor. Initial tests found no readings from the powder, the Boston Fire Department said, but the substance was to be taken to the state lab for further testing.
Attorney General Martha Coakley said her office had received a letter that contained a “white, powdery substance.”
“Initial field tests have been conducted and the results do not indicate that the substance poses a risk. In an abundance of caution, additional testing will be conducted,” she said in a statement.
Authorities responded at 12:33 p.m. for another report of a powdery substance at the JFK Building, on the 24th floor, the fire department said, and hazardous materials technicians were on the scene investigating.
