Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

I'm rather religious, and thus I have conflicting feelings, because instantly I was thrilled at the death of someone, but it's kind of an odd situation.

Well, you certainly don't have to be religious to have conflicting feelings about this. Everyone is happy that the tool is dead, but we certainly helped to create that monster 25-30 years ago.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

I'm not the least bit religious, I just feel weird celebrating death jubilantly. I am not mourning his death one bit, but I'm not going to jump around in the streets either. In no way am I going to tell a surivivor or relative of 9-11 victims to tone it down, though. No effing way. This was your day.

He was an absolute pile of excrement, and that is a huge compliment to piles of excrement. I am glad we got him, but that's where it ends. He's dead, moving on.

I have no problem celebrating someones death. Particularly someone who was as horrible as he was.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

I congratulated the prez for preserving DNA evidence by not dropping 10 B-52's worth of munitions on the place. But I didn't even realize that they also were able to retrieve a "treasure trove" of intel on computers. Excellent work, all around. Very well done.

In "Tommy Boy," Dan Ackroyd said: "Savor the flavor." That's what I'm doing. Mmmmmmm, tastes good. I think I'll have another pork chop and will somebody please pass the crab legs? We'll have plenty of time to get back to our customary sniping, let's just enjoy this moment of revenge and redemption. And take pride in the folks who made it happen. Sleep soundly "Dr." Zawahiri.

This.

This was not "eye for an eye". This was an eye to save who knows how many eyes going forward.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that"
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

For some reason, this really hit home with me, and I kind of believe this is quote is my thoughts on everything now. I was so quick to jubilate at the news of Bin Laden's death, when although an absolutely horrific person, he was still one of God's children. Is that truly right? Who knows, just something I was thinking about earlier!

It's a fabricated quote. Just so you know.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

The second said that the wife of a hero who helped take down the plane in PA and she said, "I've found myself feeling guilty about being happy for the death of an enemy. Yes he took many lives, but is should we take an eye for an eye?"

I like to think I err on the side of turn the other cheek over eye for an eye. Having said that, this is indeed a case where justice is important. But I do think we can carry this forward with dignity.

This.

This was not "eye for an eye". This was an eye to save who knows how many eyes going forward.

That's the secondary goal...stop terrorism and limit future life lost. And that's why we treat the situation with maturity and help cya for pakistan.

Having said that, you really have to admire the job done by the US all around on this one...truly brilliant.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

The worst that can happen is a nominally friendly government can be overthrown and replaced by a Taliban-led government which would have access to their nukes and would be wiling to share with their pals in AQ. Paraphrasing Bill Clinton (and meaning no insult): "It's the nukes, stupid."

Its a really tough situation to be in. Pakistan is one of the larger and more important of the "non NATO Allies." Yes, they do have nukes and the ISS does whatever it wants, regardless of the leadership in Pakistan. You cant tell me that some of the senior staff didnt know who was in their town. My professor is from Pakistan and I emailed him and to live in a house in Pakistan, it takes a really in depth form and a visit from a state official. They know who is living there.
Luckily, Pakistan has bigger fish to fry in their eyes in India, more than the USA, India is booming right now and I doubt that they would want to risk that with war.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Doesn't surprise me one bit that the MLK Jr. quote is a fake. Meh, I still admire the sentiment.

Well, half of it at least. I'm not mourning his loss whatsoever.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Obama is doing his part to help reduce the deficit! :D

On Sunday, White House officials canceled all West Wing tours so unsuspecting tourists and visiting celebrities wouldn’t accidentally run into all the high-level national security officials holed up in the Situation Room all afternoon monitoring the feeds they were getting from Mr. Panetta. A staffer went to Costco and came back with a mix of provisions — turkey pita wraps, cold shrimp, potato chips, soda.

Having pizza delivered would have blown the budget.

Seriously though, this story from the Times is must-read.

The code name for Bin Laden was “Geronimo.” The president and his advisers watched Leon E. Panetta, the C.I.A. director, on a video screen, narrating from his agency’s headquarters across the Potomac River what was happening in faraway Pakistan.

“They’ve reached the target,” he said.

Minutes passed.

“We have a visual on Geronimo,” he said.

A few minutes later: “Geronimo EKIA.”

Enemy Killed In Action. There was silence in the Situation Room.

Finally, the president spoke up.

“We got him.”

Since we'll probably never know the names of the SEAL members, do they at least get to collect the $25 million reward?

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

There was a big discussion going on at Andrew Sullivan's blog over whether it was sarcasm or not. Personally, I find the whole thing hilarious. People who moan about Limbaugh, but then just can't resist turning him on in the car, or trolling the internet for info about him. And I bet he just sits back and laughs and laughs and laughs.

and makes money

It's the Howard Stern phenomenon.

Most people listen to a radio station for about 4 minutes before turning the station.
People who like Howard Stern listen to his show for about 20 minutes before flipping around, because they want to hear what he'll say next.
People who hate Howard Stern listen to his show for about 40 minutes before flipping around...because they want to hear what he'll say next.

I think there's a problem with a comment like that. Rush controls the party. No two ways about it. You'd be hard pressed to win a Presidential election without his support. I probably turn him on maybe 5 minutes a week, but that's enough to know that he's just a partisan hack.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

From the AP:
One courier in particular had our constant attention. Detainees gave us his nom de guerre or his nickname and identified him as both a protégé of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of September 11th, and a trusted assistant of Abu Faraj al-Libbi, the former number three of al Qaeda who was captured in 2005.
Detainees also identified this man as one of the few al Qaeda couriers trusted by bin Laden. They indicated he might be living with and protecting bin Laden. But for years, we were unable to identify his true name or his location.

Four years ago, we uncovered his identity....

Mohammed did not reveal the names while being subjected to the simulated drowning technique known as waterboarding, former officials said. He identified them many months later under standard interrogation, they said, leaving it once again up for debate as to whether the harsh technique was a valuable tool or an unnecessarily violent tactic.

I'm struggling to see what exactly my comment said that contradicted that.

You're still part of the problem. (If it can even be called a problem). You just can't resist turning it on, can you? He's very good at what he does.

As for the "controls the party" line, remember how Mitt Romney rocketed to the nomination after Limbaugh endorsed him in 2008? Oh?

People complain about him because he's relevant. When he becomes irrelevant like Savage, Beck and the rest they won't care anymore. I don't listen to him (don't listen to any radio since the surgery) but when he says something particularly vile (like yesterday) it catches attention. The world will be a much better place when right-wing hate radio goes the way of left-wing hate radio.

That's not really what I mean by control. What I mean is that you can't speak out against him. Everyone that does gets destroyed by him on the radio. He doesn't control who wins, he controls who can even run.

And if listening to him for 5 minutes a week is part of the problem then, well, ok if you say so.

What was it?

The point was that Limbaugh had a very bitter, months-long public battle with McCain, and McCain still won the nomination in spite of "speaking out against him". You're giving him WAY too much credit. Sure, he has influence on a certain demographic. But not enough to diminish an already weak candidate. It might have even helped McCain overall.
