Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Eyes on the prize: what happens with the relationship with Pakistan now. That's one helluva high wire act for the diplomats.

"This of course was the end of someone who was violently subverting democratic governments in the region," U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Marc Grossman, told reporters after a three-way meeting also involving Afghanistan.

The Afghanistan-Pakistan relationship must be a lot of fun now, too. Throw in the Pakistani-India long game, past Russian and future Chinese ambitions in the region and you have a place even more complicated than the Middle East.

With Nukes.

People complain about him because he's relevant. When he becomes irrelevant like Savage, Beck and the rest they won't care anymore. I don't listen to him (don't listen to any radio since the surgery) but when he says something particularly vile (like yesterday) it catches attention. The world will be a much better place when right-wing hate radio goes the way of left-wing hate radio.

That's my point though. Why is he relevant? Because he has lots of listeners. Many of whom are like Scooby in that they profess to hate the guy, but then just can't resist turning the radio on to listen to him.

He's an entertainer who is very good at what he does. Any attempts to look for anything beyond that is just silly.

For crying out loud how does 5 minutes a week make me a listener?

All those guys who fulminated against Jane Fonda were actually her ardent viewers.

I love the argument that because the guy stokes hatred and exploits national tragedies for money that makes him beyond criticism. Here I thought it just made him a whore and a con artist.

Could you point out where anyone said he was beyond criticism? You're totally free to criticize the guy, but for me, I have better things to listen to, and more importantly, much better things to worry about.

We hold every advantage to gain cooperation there and I trust Obama and Clinton will continue to press it. It will make a world of difference in the big picture.

It will, though we also have to think about the causes of recalcitrance. Some of the Pakistan leadership (especially in the ISI) are actually in cahoots with AQ. Others, even though they may be in full agreement with the need to hunt the terrorists down to get their country under control and stop the threat of bombings, have to contend with the threat of civil war, coup d'etat, popular revolt, etc. That place seems to be, in technical political science language, bonkers.

If you don't like the guy, scrounge up a tiny bit of willpower, just one tiny bit, and listen to one of the other hundred programs on the radio. If you can't do that, then I think you have deeper problems than what some mean guy on the radio is saying.

How about your own quote for a start:

Your argument is Rush is a monkey and getting excited by what a monkey does says more about the person who is upset than the monkey. That's shielding the monkey from any responsibility for its actions -- after all, it's just a monkey.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

After 9/11 this was my preferred method... people all over the Mid-East world would just disappear... the thing is this was too closely associated to the problems of the CIA's past in the 60s and 70s (as far as i understand).

This has been Israel's modus operandi for decades.

The difference is, Israel doesn't give a crap about world opinion. Israel only cares about survival.

Mmm. That certainly wasn't the point I was trying to get across. Like I said, you can totally blame the monkey for its actions - it's totally responsible for them. Again though, for me, I don't give two ****s about the monkey. If you choose to, bully for you.

My comment was more directed at those who see conspiracies in what's on the radio or on TV news. It's about finding a niche, filling that niche, and making money. Any attempts to make it more than that are silly.

Edit: For example, I don't get any more angry at Limbaugh making fun of Obama than I do at ESPN for their "Heat Index" or for covering the heck out of Yankees-Red Sox. Both are doing things to get viewers/listeners. If you don't like it, make use of the literally thousands of other entertainment options. If you don't have the willpower to do that, I don't know what to tell you.

Just got word back from the Alumni office. David was injured on a deployment and had to retire from the Navy early, so it wasn't him who put the bullet through bin Laden's head.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Two years ago, a class of UCLA undergrads pretty accurately predicted the the location where Osama Bin Laden was hiding out. The students, working under UCLA geography professors Thomas Gillespie and John Agnew, used geographical theories and GIS software to hone in on the world's most wanted fugitive.

Science Insider explains:

According to a probabilistic model they created, there was an 80.9% chance that bin Laden was hiding out in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where he was killed last night. And they correctly predicted that he would be in a large town, not a cave.

Here's the kicker. Gillespie focus isn't national security or terrorism or intelligence or any sort of political geography. He works on ecosystems. Said Gillespie:

It’s not my thing to do this type of [terrorism] stuff. But the same theories we use to study endangered birds can be used to do this.

Gillespie's class focuses on using remote sensing from satellites to study ecosystems, and one common challenge is to find where endangered species would located within an ecosytem. As a class exercise, Gillespie introduced the Bin Laden search. The students used a geographical theory called "island biogeography" to hone in on what turned out to be Bin Laden's real hideout. Gillespie was so impressed by his students' work, they published the findings in the MIT International Review (PDF). To be clear: the class identified the nearby city of Parachinar as being the most likely hideout.

Now that his work is being celebrated by the intelligence community, will Gillespie be working with the FBI to track down more of our most wanted?

Nope. Says Gillespie:

Right now, I’m working on the dry forests of Hawaii where 45% of the trees are on the endangered species list. I’m far more interested in getting trees off the endangered species list.

That is unfortunate on two counts. Is he alright?

He's fine now, just not fit to be a SEAL anymore. Of course, I fail to see how anyone is - the stuff they do is mind-blowing. He's running Oxford Plains Speedway for his wife's dad (the CEO of TD Bank). He landed on his feet. :)

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Here we go

HAZMAT - 1 ASHBURTON PL HAZMAT COS O/S REPORT OF WHITE POWDER FROM ENVELOPE DELIVERED TO OFFICE #HAZMAT

I hope this is just a hoax and not the beginning of something.

Edit:
Fire & Police Haz Mat techs on scene. Area isolated. Field tests underway to identify powder.

Meters had no readings from powder. Will be taken to State lab for further testing. Fire units clearing. State Police to investigate.
Does that mean they read nothing harmful, or that there were no readings at all?
