Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

So the Taylor bourbon I previously mentioned - the first couple glasses were meh. After 48 hours of rest, the third glass was really good. I'm holding the rest for Christmas, so I'm hoping that by then, it will be excellent. I've heard that letting bourbon "breathe", like a red wine, is good for the flavor.

This weekend, back to basics with KBC Widowmaker.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

I also picked up the Leini Vanilla Porter which is fine for a Leine (and at a decent price) but nothing I will be in a hurry to buy again.

I was sitting in generic Denver sports bar last weekend, and saw that they had the Leinie Lemon Berry Shandy on tap. I asked for it since it was new and I enjoy the other Leinie products. The bartender says "Are you sure? Have you had it before? Would you like a sample?" God bless her, because that stuff is awful. She said she learned to offer that sample because it is so different from the other beers.

I
Took the tour of Stranahan's Colorado Straight Whiskey distillery today. Unlike many beer tours, it was NOT dumbed down. They were explaining the chemical reactions (with proper scientific names and such),etc. Darn good whiskey too. Worth it.

Also had Bristol Brewery X-Mas Ale. If Christmas had a taste, this is it. Excellent offering. Unfortunately, it is only available in- house (CO Springs).

Just found out that Bristol Brewery is releasing their Winter Warlock (oatmeal stout) today.......except it is the cask style......awesome.

Drinking a big bottle of Epic Brewing Brainless on Cherries. Ho. Ly. ****. This is intense ****.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

So, my brother-in-law asked for a couple of different bourbons on his Christmas list.

He listed:
Buffalo Trace
Bulleit
Wild Turkey Rare Breed

Looking through this thread, I've seen recommendations for:
Four Roses Single Barrel
Elijah Craig 18
Elmer T. Lee
Woodford Reserve (Double Oaked)
Black Maple Hill Small Batch

So, now it becomes a question of whether he's attached to one of those three brands, price (~$25-30 range), and availability (although I do have some decent store choices here in Buffalo). But, really, the reason I'm bringing it up is, if you could only recommend one of the above, what would it be? Thanks, guys.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

It's a toss-up between Elijah Craig 18 and Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. I used to say EC18 was my favorite but the WRDO has effectively tied it in terms of all-time favorites. It depends upon the mood I'm in really.

If he likes something sweeter with a more pronounced vanilla flavor, EC18.
If he likes something more complex and smokey flavor, WRDO.

You absolutely can't go wrong with either.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

If he likes Buffalo Trace there's no shame in getting him that. I like the Woodford Double Oaked as well but for a similar price I prefer the Blanton's Single Barrel.

You're going to hate this answer, but it's just like beer and wine - it really depends on what he prefers in a bourbon. Some are sweeter/milder than others, some are much more 'oaked' or 'complex'. Still others are smooth, while their counterparts have varying degrees of 'bite'.

Buffalo Trace is younger and a lot sweeter than the other two your brother listed. The first year or two I drank bourbon I used to be pretty dedicated to it, until I discovered Elmer T. Lee, which is a much better bourbon in the 'sweet/mild' vein for a bit more money. In the last couple of years, I've gotten into the tougher, more complex bourbons. Bulleit isn't much, if at all older, but it's got a pretty distinct bite that many would dislike ("Frontier Whiskey" indeed), and it's got a lot more rye in the grain bill than BT, which gives it more of a bitter, spicy taste - rye is not everyone's cup of whiskey. It's been awhile since I've had Rare Breed, but I recall it's nothing like the original Kickin' Chicken 101 - a lot older, considerably more complex taste, with less (though still pretty noticeable) mouth/throat burn.

I'd stick to his list - it's what he asked for. In my opinion, if he's tried a lot of whiskey before and can handle some burn and flavor, I'd probably go with the Bulleit. Somewhat experienced, then get him the Rare Breed. Otherwise, Buffalo Trace is the safe choice. At the end of the day though, I'm sure he'll be happy to drink whichever one you get. ;)

I grinded my gears about my ferry ride last night. So, I had some Johnnie Walker Gold to relax. I really like that stuff.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Picked up some Leinie's Snowdrift Vanilla Porter. I have to admit, their normal run of beers is unimpressive, but the seasonal stuff (especially the Big Eddy series) is really good.

Grand Traverse Distillery Vodka is simply outstanding. Completely changed my opinion of vodka.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Our good friend GLM has recommended Ommegang's 15th Anniversary brew; I think I know where to find it, so I'll be purchasing that, maybe saving it for the F5.

For the locals, I stopped by Liquor Boy (SLP, near Toby Keith's, but across the street in that mini-mall). Prices weren't as great as what I had heard, just a tad cheaper. The beer selection was below average. However, the liquor selection was impressive, especially the scotch section. One could probably drop a few grand quite easily in that section alone. LOTS of variety in there. If you want to pick up a bottle of something, that's where one should probably go.

If you're in the area, a hidden gem of a liquor store of Top Valu in Columbia Heights

250 single malts.

...Ommegang's 15th Anniversary brew...

WANT

Will have to make the 30-minute drive to the store that has every beer you could want soon, so I can look for that. Of course, being a limited anniversary release, it'll probably cost $20-25 for a bomber.
