Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Agreed on the Islays. My eyes were opened when a bartender my first night in Glasgow slid me a dram and said "try this, on the house". It was Lagavulin 16. I rarely drink my Glengoyne or Auchentoshan anymore because I always go for one of the Islays, and that's not taking anything away from those two single malts, they're both very, very good in their own right.

Thought I'd never get to have Fat Tire again for awhile, after the last family visit to Iowa. I was wrong - found it at my favorite beer store in MI today. Distribution seems to be creeping eastward each year. :)

Sure it's a bit overrated, but I think it's a great, balanced beer you can easily drink a lot of.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

I've got a bottle of 18 year old Bunnahabhain single malt to sample this weekend for the get-together at my house. Here's my updated whiskey/liquor list:

Single Malt Scotch:
Islay
Lagavulin 16
Bowmore 12
Bunnahabhain 18
Laphroaig 18
Highland
Glengoyne 17
Lowland
Auchentoshan 18
Auchentoshan Select (7 year old)

No Island Scotches? I would highly recommend Highland Park, Isle of Jura, and Talisker Scotches.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Highland Park is actually my second favorite scotch and my vote for best value - it's got qualities of both Islay and Speyside whiskys, and I can usually grab a bottle of the 12Y for under $50. I do want to try Talisker in the future though.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Ive been trying to get into Scotch more but the selection around here is poor and the one or two places that do have some decent choices I can't afford...oh the life of a poor grad student. I can find Glenfiddich and Glenlivet of course. Ive been wanting to get a few people together to purchase and split one of the better choices but everone I even mention scotch too gives me that "ewww gross" face.

Lagavulin is the scotch of choice for Ron Swanson.

I haven't bought any Island Scotches yet. I have considered some, but have never had a recommendation one way or another for a particular distillery, so I have always gone with something else that has been recommended. If I buy anything, it most likely won't be younger than 15 years.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

I highly, highly recommend Talisker. It's my favorite of the Islands and one of my favorites overall.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

So, the clerk at one of the liquor stores by me mentioned to me last week that he was getting in some Templeton Rye Whiskey in this week. He said he was only getting 8-12 bottles, and he was giving a couple of his bourbon-drinking customers a heads up about it. Apparently this Rye is tough to come by around here (it's mainly in IA, IL, NY, and CA IIRC).

I stop in tonight, and apparently I got the last bottle. He said one guy asked if he could buy ALL the bottles. Clerk said no, limit was 2.

I must say it's.....interesting. It's good, really good, but just.....interesting. Can't quite explain the taste.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

My birthday: other people paying for my drinks. Tonight I got three glasses of Riesling wine, a 24 oz Young's Double Chocolate Stout, and the bar I went to has their own Irish Stout, so I'm feeling pretty good right now.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

I picked up for the weekend NB Red Hoptober, Leine Wee Heavy Baltic Porter and SurlyFest.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

It's not special or good but I'm enjoying some Molson tonight.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Oh and tonight I'm having a Mic Ultra

I, however, am not drinking water.

And Molson Canadian is odd. Smells really skunky*, but isn't bad at all.

*Buddy: it smells like sh*.
Us: It's supposed to smell like that. It's normal. And it tastes pretty good!
Buddy: *ing Canadians.
