Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

I find the HOPSHOPSHOPSHOPSHOPSHOPSANDMOREHOPS trend annoying.

Ditto.

Yes, we get it. Now try something new, you know, like creating a "new style" as opposed to trying to advance the Hoprape category.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

The KBC finally made a decent IPA. :)

It's a black IPA, which I find to be a slightly annoying trend, but tasty regardless.

Eh, I don't find a lot of it out here... I know 'cause I looked for awhile just to try it.

A-freaking-men. Its been my theory is that hops tends to be the only axis they have to be creative that hasn't already been done in Europe... but you really have to have a feel for the bitter taste, I don't.

Even then there are styles out there you don't find a lot of. I LOVED Anderson Valley's Summer Solstice which is a cream ale. Can't say I heard of it before. Tasted good to me.

I'm a fan of cream ales, even if it is just the ale brewers' answer to a standard lager. It's a nice, light beer for summer or heavier drinking, and a versatile base for experimentation for homebrewers.

In celebration of the start of the NFL season, my holy season, I cracked a Fulton Blonde. It's tasty.

Anyone from the Michigan area familiar with Kuhnhenn Brewing? I was out at a bar that specializes in craft beers watching some crappy sporting event last night, and after a Kuhnhenn event earlier in the week they had 11 of their beers on tap; between three of us I think we tried six of them, and they were all excellent. I definitely recommend them if you have a chance (and also recommend Rattle N Hum if you're in NYC and looking for a place to try some good beers).

Never heard of it, probably because Warren is basically Heroin Central in metro Detroit these days. But it sounds like it's worth checking out.

Interesting, so you have half (4/8) of the Islay distilleries represented and a quarter (1/4) the Lowland distilleries but none of the 40 from Speyside and only 1 of the 30 highland distilleries.

I don't like Speyside Whisky very much, and Highland is OK, but I very much prefer Islay. Speyside is way too commercialized, for the most part, those are the Macallan's, Glenlivet's and Glenfiddich's that are so prevalent over here. They're distilled in factories instead of the smaller distilleries like other regions. Its a similar comparison to craft beer and InBev.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Islay scotch just tastes better, period. I love the ultra smoky taste that comes from the peat fire, and I don't even smoke.

That said, the less commercial Speyside scotches are still very good. Brent's beloved Balvenie, for instance - even the baseline 12Y is exceptionally tasty, especially compared to something like Glenlivet or Glenfiddich. (*snob mode*) It's a sweeter whisky, but not lacking in flavor or complexity.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

$50 is a lot, but it might pay for itself in short order if you get it refilled regularly.

There's also the matter that some breweries will only refill their own growlers, either for legal reasons or marketing reasons, so you have that to consider.

Balvenie is about the only non-Islay scotch I drink now, thanks to bbdl letting me sample all his scotches. It was an eye-opener.

And the Power whiskey will be finished tomorrow night. I promise. ;)
