Northeastern 2021-22: Our Doggie Dish Runneth Over?

...Perhaps moving the puck through the middle, and hunting it there, would disrupt the defense a bit and yield more of the precious grade A opportunities that lead to goals...

You mean like the lone goal of the night? NU played brilliant defense and when something got through, Levi was there. Other than that, best I can say is that the Throwback Reds rocked.

While I have been impressed with Hryckowian and choupani, I haven’t been impressed with the rest of the team. And only McDonough has been truly prolific. Fontaine had a great freshman campaign and was exciting to watch last year when we’re were a theoretically less offensively stacked team, but he has consistently been one of the worst players on the ice most games this year. On occasion he pulls a big goal out of the hat, but beyond those instances his play on and off the puck has been hard to watch.

Colangelo has never been what I’d call prolific. Injury may be part of this, but he’s played in enough games over the last two years to remind me that skill doesn’t translate into playing hockey that wins games. I’d put jack Hughes in this camp for now too. For how highly touted he was and continues to be his game impact has been minor. He has a few very skillful looking playmaking opportunities per game but the conversion rate on them is terrible. More often than not no one is with him and there’s a turnover. You may say well that’s not his fault, but it is if he is never on the same page as the rest of the team.

Start of this year we weren’t playing the dump and chase but we seemed to start to when the injury bug hit. We may have the worst zone entry in HE, and it gets worse on the power play!

Wow they must have been listening to me or maybe their coach chewed their ass out after Fridays game. Boys this could be our year. Also noteworthy SO number 8. Now NCAA leader in .GAA.

Wasn't expecting Levi to see any serious rubber but he did (had to stand on his head a couple of times) and that's not an entirely bad thing.

Where were the fans at tonight's game? Covid restrictions?

Exactly. The university went to a no spectators policy in early December as COVID was spiking. Classroom instruction remains in-person. Hoping things get back to something resembling normal--including spectators at Matthews--now that the holidays are in the rear-view mirror. Attendance had been fairly strong until this setback.

As to the game, credit where its due. Your guys administered a beatdown, pure and simple. Maybe just what NU needed. Looking forward to traveling to the desert and adding to my venues visited list for the inevitable payback game. Maybe as soon as next season?

Crazy year in many regards. I was surprised at the score, and that BU swept us, we swept Cornell, Cornell swept UND.... Crazy.
The new arena should be open next season. Would be great to see you there!

Difficult to overstate just how important this weekend's series with UMA plus next weekend's single with UML are. Sweep all three and NU gets some distance from UMA and while knocking on UML's door for first place. Two out of three isn't bad, provided one of the two is UML. Lose all three and it's back to the pack.

Well I drove out to UMASS tonight and really thought we could have won this game. We carried the play for 55% of the time and had many quality opportunities. Hopefully we can grab a split in the barn. The good news is BU and BC kind of suck. The bad news is will we lose Levi to Team Canada for the Olympics?

Nu ain’t that great either. Really soft schedule leads to overrated expectations.

We will be fine suspect our goalies hurt but at least we still have a chance in the NCAA, you guys are toast. It must be hard for BU and BC types to understand that the best teams in Hockey East are likely state schools in MA.

If you think NU has any shot at a national championship you are on crack. As I stated this team isn’t very good either - easy schedule so far and now they have to play the better teams.

Maybe, maybe not, but it's really all about the Pairwise. Remember, NU had Albie and realized he wasn't the guy you put on the rudder. With many college players bolting for Olympic glory anything is possible. I've seen the Olympics change the face of college hockey before, played thru it in the 80s and I suspect you are too young to understand that February is now a crapshoot, this is now a unique year. One that hasn't existed since before pro players suited up for the Gold. Good luck.

You do realize that the Olympic players will be back to their college teams around February 20th right? NU has played a very soft schedule and did what they had to but they arent close to a national contender as this weekend proved. Pairwise means nothing if you don’t have a chance at winning it all.

Have to call it like I see it: Probably the worst team effort in an important series that I've seen in years. If the continued lack of scoring isn't concerning enough, the seeming lethargic play and lack of fire puts it over the top. The Friday game may have been close on the scoreboard but not on the stat sheet. Time for this team to start playing like its hair is on fire--because it is.
