Northeastern 2021-22: Our Doggie Dish Runneth Over?

Have to commend Levi. Like seeing a kid like him do well because he's listed as 6' tall and that might be generous. Refreshing to see a goalie that size excelling in today's day of behemoths in net.

Had a buddy take his 10 year old to the game and said it was a great crowd but was shocked at some of the profanity and cheers from the student section. He didn't elaborate but found that interesting. How bad could it have been? I assume FUBU...etc?

Pretty standard stuff, no complaints from the die hards that I am aware of, this is pretty much college hockey today and it was actually much worse in the 80s and 90s. Much worse outside of HE too. Some rinks worse than others Maine for example. NU chants especially against BU and BC are remnants from an age where NU was a blue collar school and the rivalry on the ice was much more lopsided. Today when they chant BU sucks or safety school..it's fairly true. LOL. Remember that outside of NCAA most evey major league condones fighting to some extent. This isn't tennis.

Same casualty list as last week, from what I'm hearing, i.e., Colangelo/RHughes/Jacksonx2. So, another round or two of circle the wagons, let Levi be Levi, and wait for a break. And WRT the casual profanity, I can recall reading comments along the same lines on both the BC and BU threads earlier this year. Also noted that although the Doghouse had impressive numbers, the intensity and creativity were less so.

10 wins before the break.. I'll take it. Still not really scoring enough goals but we only need to score 1 more than Levi gives up and that's not much. Tonight's attendance 38.

Just bought ticket online tonight for Sunday’s RPI at Northeastern game. Matthews Arena will be lifetime rink #114 for me (after taking in Saturday’s Colgate at UConn game and overnighting in Woburn). Should handicapped parking near arena be readily available on a Sunday afternoon? Thanks.

Yes. Handicap spaces are available in the outdoor lot at the end of St Boltoph street behind the student entrance. The attendant at the booth, will direct you to a spot.

NU had some puckluck last night. The Novak GWG looked like it was of the seeing-eye variety while RPI fanned on what looked like an open-net shot late in the game. I get it that four forwards are on the casualty list but still surprised that the offense doesn't seem to include players not named McDonough or Novak.

Add Struble and Agriogianis to the casualty list. That puts NU down six regulars going into today's game vs RPI. The hockey gods must be angry.

Another gutsy win...they really could have lost both of these games this weekend, but they didn't! It was a cold walk back to.my car in the Columbus lot..but a W makes it alot shorter. 11 wins before 12/1. That's only happened 3x since we joined HE in 1984.

Looked like the injuries were taking their toll, especially late in second period when the Huskies looked gassed. Somehow, they found an extra gear in the third and took the game to RPI. The 6-on-4 PK at the end was one big-time gut check.

So, 11 wins before the end of November. I'll take it, warts and all.

First time at Matthews Arena for me (#114) and what an enjoyable experience. Got there at 10 ayem and parked in handicapped spot before anyone got there (thanks again RossiRules). Walked around the block, then people-watched (at least four scouts in attendance, including one from New Jersey Devils org). Pep band and national anthem singer were worth the price of admission. Chicken fingers and coffee were good. After witnessing UConn’s drubbing of Colgate, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon in Hartford, it was great to watch a game whose outcome was in doubt ‘til the final buzzer. I definitely will be back as the old barn immediately became one of my college faves.

Glad everything worked out. Just too bad you hit it on a weekend when most of the students were still working off tryptophan (or other) hangovers. The place is unreal when the big crowds show up. So y'all come back anytime.

BREAKING: The World University Winter Games in Switzerland, where NU was scheduled to represent the USA, have been cancelled because of Omicron and the generally rising COVID rate in Europe. NU now looking at having no games between Dec 4 and Jan 7.

That's ok..we could use the rest..I suspect there soon won't be any fans allowed at games within perhaps 4 to 6 weeks.

comments from an RPI fan who watched the game on the internet. Congrats to NU on the 2 victories. I hope that we play you again soon. I wonder when the last time was that RPI got only 1 minor penalty in a weekend.

I was impressed that your announcers had read the pronunciation guide and correctly said the names of RPI players. Many announcers don't do that or just don't name the opponent's players. OTOH, they did not do other homework. They continually harped on NU's injuries. They do have a lot, but all teams including RPI are missing key players at this time of year. They also mentioned on numerous occasions that NU has a young team while RPI has an experienced team. RPI did not play at all last season, and because of our beloved ;-) school president were not even allowed to practice. A few players still had junior eligibility and played there, but even that is the same as your new players, and those who did not play at all are in a worse situation, although there is continual improvement. We had 5 sophs in our lineup and more on the roster who are the equivalent of freshmen and one junior who also missed all of the season 2 years ago due to injury (Helsen). We had 5 transfers in our lineup (including one from NU) who are only now learning the team's system. One Sellar hasn't played since 2019-20.

FWIW, the announcers never mentioned that Gunnarwolfe Fontaine was originally an RPI recruit. Then again, ours didn't either on Friday.

Rob Rudnick is something of an institution at NU and certifiably one of the world's standout good guys. But OMG, his delivery is positively sleep-inducing. Sidekick and former player Adam Reid seems to have learned the droning delivery style from the master. Still, I'll take Rob and Adam over many others who spend more time cheerleading than reporting/analyzing.

So far as RPI goes, I thought it was the best looking seven-loss team I've seen in a long time. Gave NU everything it could handle. I think your guys will be OK going forward.

Also found myself silently rooting for TJ Walsh.

I have mixed feelings about the players who transferred out of RPI. Most claimed to have left because they could not play last season. These include Owen Savory (UML), Cory Babichuk (UVM), and Billy Jerry (LIU) whom you have or will see this year. Also Brady Ferner (North Dakota) and Tristan Ashbrook (MTU). And then there is Danny DiGrande who went to Canisius and got a penalty and a disqualification two minutes into the first game of a 2-game series against RPI, so we did not see him again after one shift. :-D

RPI's announcers are Perry Laskaris (a non-hockey RPI grad https://rpiathletics.com/staff-direc...askaris-07/137) and new for this year Dan Fridgen who used to coach RPI and was an All-American at Colgate. Perry is biased in favor of anyone on any team whose hometown is in Minnesota, but otherwise the broadcasters are unbiased. A matter of fact, years ago I was admonished by former RPI hockey broadcaster,, who now does football, for using "we" to refer to RPI here in USCHO. He stated that the WRPI broadcasters were instructed to not be homers. (This was before streaming video on RPI-TV.)

I thought he was one of the best players on the ice both games, save maybe Levi. He definitely had more hustle than the Huskies. It looks like he found a good home. I'm happy for him.

I remember Fridgen from his Colgate days. Hope he does well by RPI. But almost any pxp guy at any level is way, way better than the Bruins Jack Edwards. Every time I have to listen to him my senses quickly feel like they're being sandpapered and I end up turning the sound off. I guess he has his fans, though, since he's managed to hold on to his job.

BTW, NU's non-hockey grad answer to Perry Laskaris is Alex Faust '12, who has been the pxp voice of the LA Kings for the last couple of years and seems to be highly regarded. The anti-Jack Edwards.
