Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Shutter Island - I believe this one wasn't well liked. I paused it once he found the chick in the cave so I don't know the outcome, but so far I'm intrigued.

Would have liked it more had my wife and I not figured it out. I was hoping I would be wrong because if they were going to throw a twist that was a pretty likely outcome.

Sanjuro:

Sequel to Yojimbo (although watching Yojimbo isn't really necessary to see this movie; you just understand the main character quite a bit more; they are separate stories). Loved it. Great action, plot development, and foreshadowing. The latter, the movie gives you clues that SOMEthing's coming, but you are left to wonder exactly what it is, rather than make it obvious, like in so many of today's movies.

Seriously, if you want to see some great classic movies, Akira Kurosawa's movies are top notch.

Just watched the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland.

It was very average. Visually it was great, but I wasn't all that enthralled by the story.

You mean there was a tim burton movie starring depp that had an incredibly bland story but the visuals were great? I'm shocked I tell you. SHOCKED! ;)

I thought Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was good, and even though I hate horror thought Sweeney Todd was really well done.

Depp was great in A Nightmare on Elm Street.

I also enjoyed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Edward Scissors Hands, etc.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Not big on Burton except for Pee Wee's Big Adventure, but Depp is awesome. I really liked him in Donnie Brasco, for movies not mentioned yet.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I haven't liked tim burton since nightmare before chirstmas and I've never really liked depp, ever.

Burton didn't direct Nightmare before Christmas.

So you've never liked Burton, and you've never liked Depp, so your original post should be "I hate those guys, and I hate it when they work together."

He produced it and wrote it. THat's pretty much the trifecta. I'd say his influence was pretty deep.

This is sacrilege but I just saw House of Flying Daggers and I was bored to tears. It's gorgeous and the first ten minutes were amazing, but the atmosphere:action ratio was stratospheric.

Watched that one last night. I enjoyed it, definitely wasn't a waste of time, but like you, I had pretty **** good idea what was going on about half way through and I kept waiting for one last twist to prove me wrong. I liked the last sequence in the movie, when he is sitting on the steps talking to Chuck.

Call me a soft touch...maybe its because I'm only 22 I don't know but I really enjoyed Bandslam.

If you're thinking it's like High School Musical...(even though I havent seen HSM, I can't imagine they are anything alike given the awesome storyline of Bandslam), it's not.

Just finished In Bruges. I only understood 2 out of every 3 words, but was entertained.

Sunday must have been Shutter Island night... We watched it too, and while it wasn't quite what I expected, it was enjoyable, and a bit predictable. And I agree about that ending sequence.

My initial thoughts on Shutter Island:

Now that I've had time to digest it (still haven't seen it the second time, though), I'll stand by most of that. Particularly the fact that it is a film that builds tension throughout the picture, and doesn't waste time with pointless shocks or action sequences that would kill the dread that hovers in the background.

I'm not as worried about how "predictable" the narrative of the film is as much as others- I just want the story to be told in an interesting manner. Lots of great films have predictable endings. Shoot, Citizen Kane even spends most of its first reel telling you everything that will happen in the film. Even with mystery and suspense films, I don't quite understand the need to turn the whole experience into a guessing game: where you win when you guess the ending and the film wins when it surprises you.

"Bruges is a real shiathole!" ;) Excellent movie, IMHO.

We watched LA Confidential last weekend. One of my favorite Russell Crowe flicks.

Also got dragged to Karate Kid by virtue of free passes given to the GF and her friends. Hmm. Yeah, it sucked. I was embarrassed for Jackie Chan ...
