Night Watch/Day Watch

Seconded. These movies are amazing. IINM, there is a third in pre-production. They are the biggest budget Russian-made movies of all time, BTW.

The books they are based on are supposed to be outstanding.

I wish there was a director's / writer's commentary, because supposedly the symbolism goes about five levels deep and includes everything you'd ever want to know about Russian history, literature, and Russian Orthodox religious rituals. But they also work as just kick-ass action flicks.

Brent, I recommend you check out "The Abandoned." Much quieter and more of a psychological thriller, but it also has that dark, cold Russian winter feel to it, and in the right mood (late at night, alone in a dark house) it's actually very scary. Another movie that has a similar feeling is "Let the Right One In," the Norwegian (or maybe Swedish) original that was remade as the POS "Let Me in."

I was wondering about that, since I knew it was a trilogy. IIRC, "Mongol" was supposed to be a trilogy but they condensed (or are condensing) the 2nd and 3rd parts into one movie. Didn't know if that was the case with the Watch series.
