Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

We watched "Edge of Darkness" on HBO this weekend. Meh. Disjointed and disappointing. Wouldn't even bother putting on my Netflix for a second look.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Green hornet was a radio serial in the 30s, Green Lantern started in the 40s and they are nothing alike minus the color.

Little known fact: the Green Hornet is the great-nephew of the Lone Ranger.

Comics, regular books and all sorts of other cross-marketing geegaws spun off from those original radio serials.

And if you're wondering who Hop Harrigan is, one of the great forgotten war comics.

The 2 weeks in December that will be the Jeff Bridges celebration (Tron Legacy on Dec 17th then True Grit Dec 24th) should be awesome. Im stokked for both movies. And just because I watched it again this morning and I get a little more excited about seeing it every time here is the trailer for True Grit again...even though I know its already been posted:

Black Snake Moan

Great story about salvation. A little odd and quirky, but very good. Samuel L is great as a retired bluesman fighting his demons, and Christina Ricci is excellent as the object of salvation. After reading back on it, apparently how it was marketed was not well-received by Ricci as she thought it pandered to the collegeboy crowd (most notable the posters/dvd cover).

It's quite deeper than that. Definitely worth taking a chance on. I fully enjoyed it.

I don't recall what I thought of the movie, but I do recall enjoying Ms. Ricci. :D :D

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Today's trivia at the coffee shop was "Name the star of the movie White Christmas".

I named 3 of the 4 main's but the young gal at the register who clearly hasn't seen it was like, "we just wanted Bing Crosby". I thought to myself, do you even know who he is? :D

I can never remember the 2nd gals name (not Clooney).

Honestly, other than Crosby I couldn't name the others. Danny Kaye, maybe?

I can name everybody in "Holiday Inn," though. :)

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Harry Potter, was pretty good, obviously it was a setup for a second movie, and I think they could have trimmed it down. I was happy that they finally had Ron be some of the ***** he was in the books.

But Dobby.... oh Dobby, you kick so much *** in this movie compared to every other character that it's a crime that you were cut from the others.

They did an all right adaptation of the book. I liked this one better than HP6. The two things I didn't like in the movie was how they had to introduce come characters for the first time ever who were supposed to be risking their lives for Harry - i.e. Mundungus and Bill Weasley, and there were some bits in the movie where they switched lines between characters within a scene, but all the characters from the book were in that scene in the movie - the bit where Ron and Harry return to the tent with locket & sword and hand.

Also, given that a movie is more likely to cut characters than to add, it makes me think that the guy playing Fenrir Greyback must be horrible at delivering lines since they added the Head Snatcher.

I so hope I am wrong about the final outcome, but the True Grit previews I've seen look really, really, really bad.

[edit] Brent, I liked BSM regardless of the Ricci skin.

That movie is un-remakeable. Not only was it perfect, but Kim Darby's performance is among the top 100 in movie history.

When I saw they were making a cash dive for it I wanted to blow up the studio.

I liked it, too. I didn't know what to expect going into it, and was very happy with the outcome.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I just got done watching Men With Brooms, which is certainly one of the three or four best curling movies of the last ten years. Stars Paul Gross of the TV series "Due South" (he also wrote and directed it), Molly Parker from "Deadwood", and Leslie Nielsen. Definitely a fun watch if you enjoy all things Canada (like Curling and beavers and the Tragically Hip), or if you need a curling fix when there isn't any on TV.

(It's also the basis of a current CBC series of the same title, though I think Paul Gross may be the only one from the movie who's involved.)

I loved that movie. There's a TV show? And it has Paul Gross???? **** you CBC for not being available here.

Why does Dish/DirecTV have BBC (America) but not CBC? It's a real crime...

Kepler, despite your movie snobbery, I truly hope you have the hap-hap-happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap danced with Danny ****in' Kaye.

That is all. :D

Apparently there is a TV show; I think it was new this fall.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Saw Love and Other Drugs this weekend. Not a very good movie at all. But there was a lot of Anne Hathaway undressed, so it was still very enjoyable to watch.:D

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I've seen a few movies the last few weeks, all of which I enjoyed at least to some extent.
Unstoppable was pretty well done, nothing surprising, but Denzel's good, and it was filmed really well with good tense action.
Due Date was entertaining though I can't see it being a movie I want to watch over and over like I did with the Hangover.
The Next Three Days was better than I expected. Nothing surprising, but I enjoyed it.
saw 127 Days today and really liked it. I liked the cinematography. Franco was really good. It was hard to have too much sympathy for the character for some of his stupidity, but it gets you right in there really nicely.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Night Watch/Day Watch

The first and its sequel about guardians of the dark and light. Kind of like a Russian Matrix-type movie, but instead of computer programs and real people, it's people with certain powers guarding an uneasy truce between light and dark.

These are some *ed up movies, that's for sure. Lots of symbolism and metaphors and such, along with some bizarre cinematography. Really liked both movies, although the second one is a bit more bizarre than the original. A little more out there, and a little more action.

Very much worth taking a chance, even if you aren't into foreign movies, for whatever reason.
