That was actually a prep school course. ;)

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Watched Tron the other day. Pretty psyched about the sequel. :)

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I saw Unstoppable...I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Man, ok, I saw the trailer (twice), and saw cheese factor. Not the "okay, this is cheesy but it's still fun" but straight out "cliche, not fun, gee, Iwonderwhat'sgonnahappennext" cheese.

Am I mistaken? Is it worth a view?

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

It is pretty cliche, but it is still fun to watch and well made. It isnt going to win any Oscars but it is worth 5 bucks at the AMC.

The trailers are great.

There should be awards for trailers. One category could be "trailer least representative of movie." My winner would be Sham-a-lang-a-ding-dong's "The Village."

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

So, what are everybody's thoughts about the new Harry Potter flick coming out this week. I was looking online here, and one of the theatres in Ann Arbor has 8 regular theaters showing it at Midnight, along with IMAX showing of it at Midnight and at like 3 AM. Just seems crazy to me, but there are a lot of fans out there.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Never read or watched one, not about to start now :D

The only reason I was interested is that they are showing the first Green Lantern teaser that night...but they released it last night in HD on the intertubes. Not the best teaser ever, but as a Green Lantern freak I liked a lot of it.

Probably will see it once it hits netflix; maybe in the 2nd run theater. Haven't read the books, though my wife has all of them. Only saw one of the movies in the theater, the rest just on TV at one point or another, but at this point I might as well watch the last go 'round to finish it off. Not sure I like splitting the final book into 2 movies - if you could fit LotR: Return of the King into one long 3.5 hour movie (albeit by eliminating the scouring of the shire), you can fit harry potter into a single "long" movie, too. Strikes me as your typical hollywood money grab which, unfortunately, will work.

Well they have cut out a lot from the books for every movie and they have all been well past 2 hours long. The main audience is also younger, expecting them to sit through 3.5 hours of movie is going to cause problems. Especially if it becomes like the last LOTR and the last 45 minutes are boring as hell.

I do think they could have made one long movie for this last movie, the last book no matter how long doesn't have much going on. Then again a lot of what they probably put in the two are things that the book simply glossed over as if they weren't important. Or like in the last one they created scenes.

Hrm.... Seems to be a lot more "Sci-fi" than I would have figured for a comic book movie... Not really familiar with Green Lantern comics though, so I have no clue if liberties have been taken...

Also, speaking of comic book movies... Finally got Iron Man 2 through Netflix... This is turning out to be one of my favorite overall movie franchises out there right now and definately the top superhero one... I do think that although the action is cliche, the Iron Man series is having a lot of fun with the characters... I love Tony Stark... He's kinda like James Bond, but a lot more fun...

Green Lantern deals with basically space police with their super powers coming from the rings. There are other groups who use different colored rings that stand for different things. Some of which are not so good.

Personally I thought the DCAU movie for him was really good and they appear to be very similar. But I haven't read the comics so I can't comment on how close either of them are. And like all DC and Marvel super heroes there are a lot of origins and realities to pick and chose from.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

XM Radio Classics plays 1940's Green Lantern serials based on the Golden Age character. Very entertaining if you like that sort of thing.

Pretty good. :D

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Huh. I had no idea there was both a Green Lantern and a Green Hornet. Whoever dreamed up the second really went out of their creative way with that one.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Harry Potter, was pretty good, obviously it was a setup for a second movie, and I think they could have trimmed it down. I was happy that they finally had Ron be some of the ***** he was in the books.

But Dobby.... oh Dobby, you kick so much *** in this movie compared to every other character that it's a crime that you were cut from the others.

Spoilers
Who actually knew him from the movie continuity? He shows up and they all act like he's an old buddy, they all hung out together, had fish and chips. Then he dies after doing something awesome. And there really isn't much from the movies that emotionally ties you to the character if you don't remember the books.

I just got done watching Men With Brooms, which is certainly one of the three or four best curling movies of the last ten years. Stars Paul Gross of the TV series "Due South" (he also wrote and directed it), Molly Parker from "Deadwood", and Leslie Nielsen. Definitely a fun watch if you enjoy all things Canada (like Curling and beavers and the Tragically Hip), or if you need a curling fix when there isn't any on TV.

(It's also the basis of a current CBC series of the same title, though I think Paul Gross may be the only one from the movie who's involved.)

Green hornet was a radio serial in the 30s, Green Lantern started in the 40s and they are nothing alike minus the color.

As for the sci-fi...Green Lantern is space based and is sci fi to the hilt. First Flight is a great introduction to the character. There are 3600 sectors to the universe and each Green Lantern patrols one and reports to the Planet Oa (at the center of the universe) and the Guardians of the Universe. The upcoming movie tweaks the story they are using (Parallax) a bit but it actually seems to work quite well. I have every issue since the relaunch
