Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

As long as we're talking about the MPAA, if you haven't seen This Film is Not Yet Rated, I highly recommend it. Its a pretty good documentary on the rating system, and exposes how ridiculous the MPAA is.

This.

Or just watch South Park: BLC. It exposes how ridiculous the MPAA is as well.

And the movie was made funnier because the backlash against the cussing in the movie happened in real life. :D

And you can have one F-bomb in a PG/PG-13 movie. No more than that, though. See: Be Cool and Spaceballs.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I could maybe see that, but did they play music for Leo at the beginning of the movie before sending him backwards into the tub? I'm planning to see it again so I'll be sure to pay attention to that (my wife didn't see it and I want to take her).

I know it's arguing a minute detail, but it stuck in my head at the time...

I think it had to be a major sudden fall. Perhaps that flip was not just enough. More (whited to avoid spoilers): The van fell quite far, the elevator and bunker place also had major falls. Ellen Page's character jumped from that building in that final dream level. My guess is that the flip wasn't enough of a kick especially with the sedation. The same thing went through my head too though, but I soon forgot about it. Too much other awesome going on.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I think they still needed to be hearing the music for them to come out of it on the first kick...or something.

I think the music was to let them know that they were about to be pulled out of it. The music was more of a marker for the people in the dream that something was about to happen.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I finally saw Wedding Crashers. The "fun first half" is fantastic, the "serious second half" is cliche but I liked all the characters so it worked. A-.

I would vote to confirm Christopher Walken as Secretary of State. Nobody would mess with us.

Saw Boogie Man, documentary about Lee Atwater (if you don't know, look him up). A bit irritating in the "look at me, I'm a filmmaker" department, but some great information and some really interesting interview footage, particularly with the man himself. To this day I think about this guy whenever I eat at Red, Hot and Blue, which isn't ever often enough. B+.

Took the kids to Karate Kid today and I don't care what anyone says - I liked it. They didn't bastardize a super-classic by remaking somehting aking to Casablanca, the Smith kid is actually twice the actor Macchio was, Chan took a different take on the mentor as a twsit, and I thought it was very well done. It perhaps ran just a bit long and therefore became somewhat self-indulgent, and it's certainly nothing I'll run right out to rent once available, but it's not nearly as bad as reviews led me to believe.

Joy Division on Hulu. It's a documentary on the band, told mostly by the band members and a few of the people around them. 2 things I never knew that I learned from watching: 1) New Order was just Joy Division minus Ian Curtis (really, that fact somehow escaped me for all these years), and 2) Joy Division saved Manchester, UK.

A nice little (though understandably a little sad) movie on what was a pretty revolutionary band. Lots of great live footage.

Inception was awesome. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Best movie of the summer by far.

The ending was perfect.

Yeah, I know, its just one of those movies where you have to watch again, just to get everything that was going on in all of the dreams.

Great movie! The other two things it confirmed were (1) Ian Curtis was a prat, and (2) the Music of Manchester was, for a brief and shining moment, as amazing a scene as any in rock-punk history (see also: 24 Hour Party People).

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Inception.

Wow.

****ing WOW.

Spoiilers in white: Mrs. EoDS and I are still wrapping our heads around it, but I think I've got a good idea. I agree with p2b, the sedation is probably what solves the "van flipping over" issue. I also agree with go jackets: the music is to serve as a signal.

What amazed me was the fact that the climax took place in 4 levels of dreaming (the van, the hotel, the mountain and the crazy self-made dream world) and that Nolan kept everything moving very simply and logically from one dream to another. That is masterful film-making and excellent editing. It made the ending of the film much more straightforward than it has any right to be.

Now, the ending... one thing that is frustrating me about it is that we never see Cobb or Saito waking up. We've seen Saito die, so he's in limbo. We can probably safely assume Cobb dies after he's stabbed, so he's in limbo. The meeting between Cobb and old Saito (has he lived a full life in limbo, before Cobb arrives? Time does behave exponentially in this case, right?) must take place in limbo. But we don't really know the rules of limbo, do we? Presumably, Saito and/or Cobb use the gun in limbo to kill themselves and wake up, but we don't see any of that, so how do we know?

Furthermore, we learn that being in limbo makes you question whether you are in a dream or in reality. My final answer to what I think the movie means is this: because Saito and Cobb are in limbo, their brains are now fried a bit, and they no longer know whether they are awake or dreaming. As a result, we don't see them wake up because they probably aren't 100% sure of that themselves. Therefore, since Cobb doesn't know if he's awake or dreaming anymore, neither do we. And that's why we don't get to see if the top falls over.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

A very good read that probably gives the best explaination of Inception that I can think of:

http://www.salon.com/entertainment/movies/film_salon/2010/07/19/inception_explainer/index.html

In freakin' Salon of all places. (Heard about it via AVClub.com)

Put in white to avoid potential spoilers: I agree with what they wrote there at the very end. It was what I decided after I walked out of the theater and drove home too. Nolan left the ending ambiguous on purpose. Its really up to us to decide. I feel like the clues that are in the movie about whether or not its all in Cobb's head can be interpreted as such that one person will say the end is still a dream and another will say its not. Which is really the beauty of the whole thing. In Ebert's review he stated that he could easily tell you the way it ended and it wouldnt spoil anything because its more about the journey you take to get to that ending than anything else. And that journey will be a little bit different for everyone that watches it. Which is what makes it so great. Just my opinions.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I'm gonna go see Inception a second time this afternoon. I went last weekend, and my wife didn't get to go, so it's a good excuse to see it again myself :D

I think I'm going to see it again...one because it will be in IMax this time, and second, for that very reason you listed.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Watching Terminator Salvation right now. It's......kind of ridiculous. And not nearly as good as I or II.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Watched "The Losers" on PPV. Check reality at the door and enjoy some funny bits and action. :)

Good, but it looks like RED is going to be much better:

Black Gold

Doc on the coffee industry. Meh. It could have been made in a more interesting way (like King Of Kong, or What Would Jesus Buy?) but it was made in a PBS style. Yawn. The subject/interesting stuff was there, but the directors failed.

Body Of Lies

Pretty good. Crowe impresses me more with each movie I see him in. He's such a condescending arsehole (yet you kinda like him) in this one. Great job. DiCaprio is good, as usual, and Mark Strong (first time seeing this guy) is excellent. Call this movie a sort of "Enemy Of The State" for the current age, only in relation to the technology and such that they show. That part of it is kind of eye-opening, as you suspect/"know" they have it, and they show you this much, which leads to the question: what AREN'T they showing you? Worth a watch, for sure.

I loved Body of Lies. The ending was predictable but that didn't take away from it at all. It was still ****ing awesome.
