Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I loved Body of Lies. The ending was predictable but that didn't take away from it at all. It was still ****ing awesome.

I kinda thought (spoiler): that Crowe would off DiCaprio, as he could become a liability now.

Otherwise, yeah the ending was about what I figured. It just depended on if you wanted the movie to be an upper or a downer.

Yeah ---> I'm an optimist at heart so I went with the good ending.

Yeah --->

I thought it woulda been more predictable with the other ending, and more entertaining, but as it was, it wasn't horrible to go with the ending they used, and there were still questions left unanswered, which I generally like.

Rented The Runaways. Entertaining, when taken as your straightforward "story of a rock band" film.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I liked Terminator Salvation, but even so it had no chance to be as good as I and II, those movies are classics...and I thought Body of Lies was kinda lame. Not as bad as State of Play, but the second half of the movie was just kinda dumb. They needed to spend some more money on the script and less on the really cool tech.

Went to Salt yesterday. It was fairly good. Not to much over the top..unless you don't believe that Angelina Jolie can continuously beat the crap out of secret service agents...i for one think she can. Definitely sets up for a run of movies. The action was fairly good, decent story, twist i didn't see comin

Inception - what a mouthful of a film. Elaborate plot, all the jumping from one dreamscape to the next and back again, on-the-fly MacGyverisms, etc.

It was decent though...I think?

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Add me to the list of people blown away by Inception. Great movie. Best new movie I've seen in a while, and pretty easily Nolan's best film (though, I thought he wrote it with his brother, but not according to IMDB).

In Ebert's review he stated that he could easily tell you the way it ended and it wouldnt spoil anything because its more about the journey you take to get to that ending than anything else. And that journey will be a little bit different for everyone that watches it. Which is what makes it so great. Just my opinions.

This.

A truly great movie will be great whether you know all of the plot-twists or not. I do try to avoid spoilers, but if the story is good enough, it shouldn't matter.

Truth.

And you can also "train" yourself to watch a movie "through child's eyes." That meaning, watching it like you've never seen it before. You can catch a bunch of things in the more complex movies, and still be impressed with basic things of the movie.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

As with any Chris Nolan film, you're in love with it when you see it, but wait about 24 hours and you'll think of stuff that bothers you about it.

In this case, it's actually rather mild complaints that don't really hurt the film all that much.

1. The expository dialogue is actually not that bad for a film as mentally challenging as this one. But even with that in mind, every time I hear a lot of exposition in a film (particularly films that are already strong visually), I'm always left wondering "why couldn't this just be shown to me" or "telling this stuff verbally sort of feels like the easy way out". Again, it's not like they go through large soliloquies (most of the exposition takes place in quick lines of dialogue), but it's something that sticks out after you digest the movie a bit.

2. As such, a lot of the cool visuals here end up being just that: cool visuals. They look great, but don't really tell us much. How many shots in this movie really actually told us something instead of just being cool special effects? Of course, that's not a huge complaint either: the fight in the hotel hallway was freakin' awesome.

3. Is there a theme here? It seems like the movie is mostly a heist film that only hints at something deeper (losing your grip on reality, letting go after tragedy, living in dreams instead of in life, etc.).

I wouldn't say that all of this on its own would ever knock the film down below a B or a B+ (in fact, the rest of the film is so strong, that it's still an A- or an A in my book), but it's there.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I'll join you. Easily the best movie of the year. I would not be surprised to see it in some top 10 of the decade (2010-2019) lists...probably Ebert's...who I actually respect as a critic...

Agree with Terrierbyassociation too. I will definetly be buying the DVD and watching it again to try and see any little things I missed. May even see it again in the theaters in a few weeks. Try to hit a show that will likley be empty so I can really focus on it.
Yes to both of these. I'd definitely put it on my Top list.
We will also be getting the DVD to not only watch the movie again (and again...), but to watch some of the Behind the Scenes stuff.

Loved it. Truly. Nolan is one of the greats.
