Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Too busy to catch Inception this weekend (Mrs. EoDS and I have penciled it in for next Sunday afternoon), but I can concur that 2012 is a much better movie than you expect it to be. You just need the right mindset (think Mystery Science Theater), and you'll enjoy the crap out of it.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

We watched "Rachel Getting Married" last night. It was pretty good if you enjoy dysfunctional families. The camera work reminded me of a documentary or some sort of reality TV show. Anne Hathaway is amazing.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Re-watched "Doubt" tonight with my parents (who have never seen it). It was interesting to get their takes on it, as my dad is more or less against the Catholic church's ways, and my mom is pretty devout (although not blindly).

Dad had Hoffman convicted within minutes (even uttering something I found amazingly close-minded: "Circumstantial 'evidence' is often the best evidence." )

Mom truly didn't know what she thought was the truth, one way or the other.

Both really enjoyed the movie and thought it was VERY powerful. That made it worth it for me.

I caught more of how things were said, like specific phrasings of sentences. For example, when Streep says to Hoffman "You talk to [the boy] like you are the same." Spoiler: The boy is gay, and it's possible that Hoffman is, too.

Really adds depth to the movie.

Saw a bunch of posters in Boston this weekend for "Step Up 3-D". Who's excited?? Oh, right *ing NOBODY.

Inception was outstanding. I'll fight anyone saying they hated it.
I hated it.

Ok, not really, I haven't seen it yet (in the same boat as EoDS - have plans to see it next Sunday afternoon w/ 'Ewe), I just think I could take you in a fight (I know your weaknesses... muahahaaa :p ).

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

and (RotS) was somehow PG-13 (given the lava battle scene with Anakin, I thought that deserved an R using the MPAA's ratings guidelines).

Eh, very, very, very few movies get an R strictly for violence. It's probably the chief criticism of the MPAA's ratings system.

one boobie = R
one unobscured F-bomb = R.
Rip a guy's heart out = PG (well, today would be PG-13; since that scene from Temple of Doom forced the creation of the PG-13 rating).

Generally speaking, the only way to get an R for violence is to make a horror movie. And at that point, there's probably going to be cursing and/or boobies in it anyway which would make it an R anyway.

I'm pretty sure I've seen boobs in a PG-13, but I can't remember what the movie was...

If it was an older movie, it's certainly possible. There are things in Airplane! that would never make it past the censors these days.

Also, I was exaggerating for effect, somewhat. The point is that extreme violence is generally ok so long as we don't see any sex or hear any cursing. And then we wonder why today's kids are f'ed up.

Yup. Wal*Mart refuses to sell Maxim (or any of the other similar mags), but you can buy a variety of magazines about guns. (Not that gun magazines promote violence, just that the message is "guns >> boobs").

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Saw three this weekend:

Toy Story 3: What can you say, another great Pixar movie.

Young Frankenstein: Somehow had never seen it before, but now probably my favorite Mel Brooks movie. Really good.

Up in the Air: I was ready to turn it off about an hour in when George was about to learn his lesson and become a human being or whatever, but the little twist with his relationship at the end was really unexpected, for me at least. Made the whole of the movie much better.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I saw 3 movies this weekend.

Despite hearing many times that it was really bad, I watched The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I read the book, and I was just curious about how bad they made the movie after reading the book. Surprisingly, the story from the book wasn't completely distorted to make it a movie. There were some changes, but that is understandable. The thing that made me think that this was so terrible was the brutal acting and they just did a poor job of directing and producing it. I really think that if they did this movie, with the same script with a better director/producer/actors, it wouldn't be that bad.

The next one was She's Out of Your Leauge. It was entertaining. I laughed alot and Alice Eve is very yummy. The girl from Breaking Bad was in it and I thought she was hilarious.

Lastly, Law Abiding Citzen. Not really great, but entertaining enough. I think they could have done alot more with this movie, after looking back at the plot. In other words, a movie about a guy that can kill people while he's locked away had the potential to be quite a bit better. IMO.

I agree...it was entertaining and better than I thought, but it could have gone a few steps farther and been a fantastic flick.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I saw Inception Saturday. Just great. One problem, and it is minor:

When the van flipped over down the hill - why wasn't that a "kick?" Didn't that make the sleeping folks feel like they were falling? Was the flipped van necessary? I mean, at that point, all I could think of was my first question... It was kind of distracting.

Other than that, I loved it.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I think they still needed to be hearing the music for them to come out of it on the first kick...or something.

I could maybe see that, but did they play music for Leo at the beginning of the movie before sending him backwards into the tub? I'm planning to see it again so I'll be sure to pay attention to that (my wife didn't see it and I want to take her).

I know it's arguing a minute detail, but it stuck in my head at the time...
