Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

They were reviewing a possible gopher goal.

Really? This was the penalty that ocurred along the boards 1/2 way into the zone? The gopher got a shot off? Boy, nobody around us had a clue what was going on.

Yeah, they were reviewing the Gopher shot that went off the far-side post and out about 2-3 minutes before the penalty call. The penalty was the next possible stoppage in play for them to review.

Ah. Thanks.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

I agree. The third period was scary, and the guy who scared me the most was Ramage (so much so, I didn't even notice Smith). He was running around frantically and making bad passes. Everytime he was out there, I was counting the seconds until he got back off.

Agreed on Ramage. I really liked the way he looked in the games against UNH last week, but he made a few pretty bad moves last night. I was especially unhappy with his play on the breakaway that led to the Gophers' first (?) goal - Bennett was committed to the guy with the puck, and Ramage should've done more to break up the pass or block the shot from the other side.

I think he'll improve - it's still early in his first college season. We just need to see him play like he did against UNH every night.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

During Bennett's days as a BU Terrier, he was known to almost flop down on the ice routinely, and was given nicknames by BU fans such as "Sir Flopsalot." My question for Badger fans is how does he look thus far? Are you guys happy with his play thus far, and also is he still "flopping'?
He looks pretty good to me. He goes into the butterfly more than we're used to around here, but at 6'3" a buck 90, big goaltenders can do that. With his size, he still looks good down low, in my opinion. When Shane Connelly dropped (5'7" ?) there was enough room to install a drop ceiling between his head & the crossbar. Scared the **** out of me every time.

He moves the puck, and leaves the net more than any UW goalie I can remember. That said, I don't think he wasn't recruited by UW; it wasn't the preferred style. I really haven't seen him "flopping". Flopping to me is what Dominator Hasek did in his day.

Friday game was entertaining but that **** 3 period almost us cost again. However, I'll take a win anytime.

One question; I think it was the 1st MN goal, what was Ramage doing? The goofs came down 2-1 and Ramage kind of stayed between them. Shouldn't he commit to the man with the puck and let Bennett make the save if he passes it? Bennett was kind of left out to dry. Nice play by MN to recognize that.

That kind of mistake is how you let teams back in games.

EDIT: sorry Dan, we must have posted almost at the same time.

I think the issue was that it was basically a 4 on 1. Obviously Ramage didn't play it perfectly, but even if he did, in that situation so long as the attacking team executes it's a goal every time.

No, you're always taught to let the goale have the shooter(since he's already squared up) and try to block the passing lane. The best thing Ramage could've probably done there is go down on his belly forcing Schroeder to shoot or make a perfect saucer pass to Hoeffel. Even if he did that there was still another Gopher trailing the play all alone.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

MN has even a bigger problem, they can't pass.

I don't know what the deal is, but I can't remember so many passes into peoples skates instead of tape-to-tape. It is especially evident on the PP. And is almost like they lack confidence to make those passes, as a lot of them on the PP seem soft, giving the PK team time to react.

As for the game, I think it could have gone either way. In the other games Kangas played this year, only two of those would have been goals. And if the refs had decided that there was interference before the first goal, it is a totally different game. If the Gophs can get a better PK going and just a couple players pick it up, they can compete with anybody in the league (and Kangas doesn't allow ones in he should stop).

Of course it didn't help not having Bariball. Sacchetti had a couple golden opportunities that might have gone differently had Barriball been in the same position.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

All Minnesota can do now is win tonight and then they're at about the same place they've been all year. Nothing special, nothing so devastating it can't be overcome. Get swept again and I suppose the "road" or "Barriball, Leddy" excuse will flow from the echo chamber, but I ain't buying.

We'll take the split. Wasn't too impressed with Wisconsin's defense tonight though, I guess they're overrated or something. ;)

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

I don't want to blame Bennet for the loss, he was hung out to dry on some of those....but I didn't like Eaves decision to start him.

I thought we had a good rotation going.

Your excuse last night doesn't work:

From http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/weekend:

Main Entry: 1week·end
Pronunciation: \ˈwēk-ˌend\
Function: noun
Date: 1638

: the end of the week; specifically : the period between the close of one work or school week and the start of the next

For what he saw last night, he looked good.

Anywhichway, good series, hard fought wins for both teams.

Friday is a weekday. Friday is not called a weekend. Therefore, you are incorrect. If MN-WI played after midnight Friday night, then it would have been a weekend. :p

MNS adds: people do work until midnight Fri nights, so the work week is still going on. BOX.

I am not incorrect. That was directly from Merriam Webster. You can take it up with them. (I thought the link made that pretty clear?)

Yes, I know. They said "work week." And as MNS pointed out, people are still working on Friday nights. Therefore, the work has not ended. Pretty clear, if you ask me. :p

Good to see a win despite the number of shots given up.

btw - I'm sure several names will get tossed around for their play (Lucia, Fairchild, Budish) but I've seen a lot of effort from White so far that I think was missing last season. If Schroeder could find a way to do the same it could go a long way to help this team win.
