Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

There were 5-10 chances that on normal nights usually find the net. I don't give much credit to Kengas because he didn't make any great saves, but he used the pipes and crossbar to his advantage greatly.

47 shots and you don't give him much credit? I am guessing you were the one arguing before the series how much better your goalies are. He was in perfect position for most of the saves, making them look easier than they were. On several occasions, the play changed directions and he had to respond and was there waiting before the shot came. And posts and crossbars don't count as shots on goal, so "using them to his advantage" is a ridiculous statement. When has a goalie not "taken advantage of pipes and crossbars". If anything, a lot of pipes often result from a goalie positioning himself so little net is showing, so the shooters have to try to put the puck just inside the post. Just because he doesn't play for your team doesn't mean you can't give the guy credit for a great game.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

It was a rather odd series. UW played better tonight than they did last night but they ended up losing with 47 shots and no puck luck at all. There were 5-10 chances that on normal nights usually find the net. I don't give much credit to Kengas because he didn't make any great saves, but he used the pipes and crossbar to his advantage greatly. A split isn't bad, but UW was the better team in this series and hopefully they can build on this going into the coming weeks.

I thought Bennett was awful tonight. The first goal was one of the biggest softies I've ever seen and the next 3 were mostly the defense's fault, but a good goalie has to make an amazing save on some of them. I really admired the 4th Gopher goal though. It was a pretty shot to the upper left that Patrick Roy couldn't have stopped.

Overall it was a great birthday weekend for me and I got a chance to see some good hockey. I even got wished a happy birthday by a Gopher fan at the Nitty Gritty with my balloon sticking out of my beer mug. Good times.

By the way, what was with the Kohl Center not being sold out for the Gophers game? It looked like they had more people for the CC series. I'm sure they'll be more people at the games after the new year when hockey picks up in this state, but a rather embarrassing performance by our below par hockey fan base. Hey Minnesota fans, any ideas on how to get people interested in hockey down here? Good luck until we meet again.

so, letting your biggest rival come into your own building, and outscoring you for the weekend shows Wisconsin is the better team. Even though MN was missing it's two top scorers. Better go stock up on some extra paint thinner, bud.

You get out shot like that and you'll lose more of those games than you'll win. We dominated large stretches of last night's game, but you out executed us in converting shots. It can be argued which of those proves superiority, but like I said, it's a dangerous way to live.

The question is would you always out execute? If not, then you are not the better team and just had a fortunate night. Kangas played well, but had a LOT of puck luck were we missed on very open opportunities and by missed I mean either hit him, flubbed the puck or hit the pipe.

You were fortunate to win that game and I would admit that if the roles were reversed. We've certainly stolen games before.

I don't think that this weekend proved anything as to who the better team is, and even though we've got some work to do, I'd rather have our foundation on which to build upon at this point. And judging from how most Gopher fans have been posting so far this season, so would most of you.

Oh, and Bariball's out for the year, so he's really not on the team any more. I hope you guys aren't gonna use that for an excuse all season.

Yeah, yeah I know... SCOREBOARD. And I don't completely disagree with that, but scoreboard doesn't always indicate the better team, just the team that won.

See you guys at the end of the road...

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

Gopher teams in recent past have had a history of huge shot advantages in games they eventually lost. Location of the shooter and quality of the shots are more important than mere numbers.

Attributing the win to bad puck luck by the BADgers is a cop-out and fails to give credit where it is due - to Kangas. As was said before, when pucks hit a lot of pipes, it's often because the goalie has the angles covered and the shooter is forced to aim for that tiny crack they think they see.

So no credit should be given to Bennett on Friday night then when Sacchetti had one or two easy put backs on open nets that I made when I was a squirt and he missed them completely. Yeah, that makes sense. And as another Badger fan posted, lots of our goals were "softies". Did either of you watch Friday night's games? Two to three of the goals Kangas gave up were softies. The only goal he didn't have a chance on was the last goal because of a beautiful pass and lack of defense by Sacchetti. Are the Gophers supposed to stop shooting "softies" on net? Christ, give credit where credit is due.

I agree. On any given day or night in any sport, it's very common for discussions to be colored by counterfactual thinking or the tendency to imagine different outcomes that might have occurred based upon imaginary situational events. Close events like "Hitting the pipe" intensifies it and there's often a tendency to overestimate personal factors and underestimate situational factors, a fundamental attribution error. And then there's the base rate fallacy of the UW "Defense for the Ages" argument, however I am simply unworthy to discuss such an ineffable topic.

a team with a defense for the ages, doesn't get outscored at home. so, maybe you guys aren't as good as you think.

I love how the Minnesota fans keep pointing to outscoring us this week when it was 7-6 them, and one of them was an empty netter. Nice job getting that empty netter!

We don't have the "Defense for the Ages". You do.

Well, when a team has a "defense for the ages", and you used to be known for good goalies and playing the trap to perfection, letting a team that is missing a lot of it's scoring fire power walk all over you must be humiliating.

Speaking of hyperbole - it was A Minnesota fan who said it once. :D

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

You can take your blue line and we'll take ours. Keep dwelling on that "Defense for the Ages" statement. It's still better than yours.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

Wow this thread is lame. Sconnie splits in their house but they are, obviously, the much better team. What a bunch of dolts.

On to the next thread. I'd much rather talk with Bemidji fans.

After watching Bennett flail around, you'll need to remind me which one was the empty netter

I feel Wisconsin is the better team, and by a nice margin (*this* season). Yeah, they lost last night but it was evident to me throughout the weekend that UW was better. They outchanced the rats so badly that it was fun to watch even when they lost on saturday. Not once during this series did I have the old 1997 or 1998 feeling that Minnesota was going to come in pass all over the place and score 15 goals.

Craig Smith looked great, Stepan, the entire D, although once again B. Smith made a mistake or 2, and Ramage looked hesitant once or twice.

yeah, I know rat fans will pile and say the got a nice split on the road. I'm perfectly happy with where UW is right now and where they will be by season's end if they put forth the effort of the last 2 weekends from here forward.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

I completely agree. I think I have a decent argument to think the Badgers are the better team when they outshot their opponent 79-46 on a weekend. Count your blessings, Goofers. We need 4 points from UAA now this weekend.
