Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

I completely agree. I think I have a decent argument to think the Badgers are the better team when they outshot their opponent 79-46 on a weekend. Count your blessings, Goofers. We need 4 points from UAA now this weekend.

You don't have a decent argument. Scoring chances are way more important than shots on net ever will be. The fact of the matter is the BADgers split.

You know, after reading this thread, it made me realize that no matter how much I hate Sue more than Becky, at least I actually enjoy reading some of their fans' posts on here. Badger fans on the other hand...not so much. Glad you guys completely outclassed us this weekend and got a split at home w/the Defense of the Ages and your clearly superior goaltending. We could have put a cardboard cutout in there on Saturday night and still won 5-2, right? We can take away that ENG at the end of Saturday night's game...but we can also take away the first Badger goal Friday night after a non-call on the obvious interference penalty by a Badger on Fairchild that led to the McDonagh goal. In other words, I believe that would make 6 > 5. That's fun to use the other way.

For the last time, a St Cloud fan called it a defense for the ages. Are you people really that dense? Oh yeah, paint thinner, deer, blahhhhh...

Come up with some new material, for the love of GOD! Please?

And yes, in our analysis we should discount every goal that there was an uncalled penalty on as well as any where the puck didn't go where the shooter intended, and any that the goalie meant to save and finally any that the goalie would normally save, but didn't.

Most reasonable people who don't have an ulterior motive don't count ENGs when discussing outcomes.

Face it we buzzed you all weekend except for stretches of the third on Friday. You got the split. Well done and if you're happy with where your team is right now, GREAT!

All I know is that two short weeks ago, it was hard to get a spot on that ledge that most of you were about to jump off.

If you hate the sioux or is it custers?, more than UW, and enjoy reading their posts more than UW fans, why are you wasting your time here?

This weekend proved a lot to me about UW and MN, and Eaves' attitude after the game in the interview further cemented it. He was completely unconcerned with the loss and focused on a great effort that produced 47 some odd shots on goal.

forget the rats, they're yesterday's news:D

Well a) Gopher fans aren't reasonable and b) they have ulterior motives. End of thread. Crap to you, Minnesota.

Stay classy.

You beat us pretty good on Fri, and we returned the favor on Sat. End of story. :p

I find it pretty funny that he was unconcerned that they gave up 4 goals to a team that can't score. I can guarantee you Lucia was concerned after Friday's game.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

The badgers outshot the Gophers Saturday but saying they outplayed them could be a little misleading. When the Gophers buried their chances better, and got better goaltending, did they really get outplayed? Debatable if you ask me. However, I see the badgers point too. There is something to be said for carrying the majority of the play.

So who is the better team? There isn't a lot to go on for sure, but I would give a slight edge to wisconsin. The scoring ability for both teams looks too close to call. The goaltending is pretty close too, but I think Minnesota appears a little bit better here. The difference is the wisconsin defense. They appear to hold a significant edge over Minnesota. While it may not be the "Defense of the ages", the badger defense looks to be one of the best in the conference this year. Very impressive. I don't think there is a component of the Gophers game that is this strong.

McDonaugh, Gardiner, Geoffrion, and Grotting. I thought all looked very good this weekend, I'm including Friday in this weekend. Sorry Brent! :p

The play of Bennett between the pipes wasn't terribly great if you ask me. He looked good in spurts but I don't see him as very dominant. However, he doesn't appear to be much of a liability either. With the badgers defense, his play should be good enough. If he can get hot at the right time, wisconsin could go far in a one and done format.

Lucia, Budish, Fairchild, and White looked the best for the Gophers. When Budish catches up to WCHA speed, he could be a really big contributor this year. This weekend it almost looked like he has caught up to some degree.

Oh if only Schroeder could shake off his mediocre play. He looked better this weekend, but not to what he showed all last year. I wonder what happened over the summer? I wasn't concerned at first, but we're 8 games in now. He has to improve though, he's got too much talent to be down for too much longer.

As good as Kangas was on Saturday, he was just as bad on Friday. If the Gophers are going to do anything this year, the goaltending has to be more like Saturday and less like Friday. Since it has been mostly good this year, I'm hoping we'll see that more often. Unfortunately, the Gophers will not win many games if they give up 3 or more goals. That's quite a bit of pressure on the shoulders of Kangas and Patterson. How they handle it could determine how far they go. It would help if we saw some players up their game a little bit. All are capable, but will any step up?

Pretty entertaining pair of games. The Friday game was nip and tuck right up until Street buried the back breaker. Average (better than displayed) goaltending by Kangas may have made a difference in Minnesota's favor. On Saturday, the Gophers benefited from 2 first period goals while getting badly outshot. The badgers couldn't come back from that with the Gophers narrowing the shot margin considerably the last 2 periods. Average (worse than displayed) goaltending by Kangas could have made a difference in wisconsin's favor.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

This thread sucks.
I agree; I've got nothing to add.

Wait.

After the Friday night game Gopher TV (FSNorth) thought we might see Patterson on Saturday night. Badger radio thought we might see Gudmandson on Saturday night.

Maybe we should have.

We can argue this all day and nobody would be right. The Badgers had more sustained pressure and I'd argue had a noticeable edge in quality scoring chances (I can't find any box scores that track the stat) but the Gophers finished better, and the Phenom was the better goaltender, end of story. The Saturday game actually reminded me of some games the Badgers have won against the Gophers the past few years when they were outplayed. Also, it freaked me out to see the Gophers play the trap, especially on Friday.

Budish will be up to speed after the WJC.

He admitted Bennett didn't play well and Bennett admitted he wasn't focussed.

If I was Eaves, I'd be concerned that my pp is aweful and couldn't close the deal Saturday.

I thought the refs were calling the game to improve the odds of a split on saturday. They seemed to let a couple WI penalties go early and called them on MN. Given how each teams PP looked, they must have figured that the shorthanded team had the advantage.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

Neither game a sell out with football out of town, once again, pathedic, this team needs a big year because I am starting to see attendance fall off in recent years. i can remember 2-3 years ago saturdays where a sellout with UMD or St Cloud in town, now we can't even sell out a saturday game against the biggest rival... I knew something wasn't right when i saw the crowds for the UNH series....
