Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

During Bennett's days as a BU Terrier, he was known to almost flop down on the ice routinely, and was given nicknames by BU fans such as "Sir Flopsalot." My question for Badger fans is how does he look thus far? Are you guys happy with his play thus far, and also is he still "flopping'?

He's looked fine and I haven't noticed any excessive flopping. He has given up a few juicy rebounds including a couple tonight, but overall he looks okay.

The problem is that neither of our goalies has had to stand on their head yet this year as we generally seem to outshoot our opponents. Tonight for instance, the Gophers had less than 20 shots(if I remember correctly). They attempted a whole lot more but our defense for the ages( ;) ) blocked almost 30 shots.

We'll see what we've got in him when someone gets 35+ shots on him. we'll see if he can steal a game for us.

No open flames around here with all the paint thinner. We'll send you a can if the Badgers sweep. :D

:p Different meaning for "burned." I like my whiskey/Cokes or 7&7's with a little bite to 'em. Many (actually probably most) bars don't "burn" them. The DT in Houghton does. So did (and maybe they still do) First Ave in Mpls, and of course, your local dive bars. The best bars burn 'em and then pour a "floater."*

*Floater: mix drink, pour a little more whiskey on top without mixing drink.

Edit: Gurt: I bet we attempted 30+ shots. The blocked shots are a strength of the traditional Badger team.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

Minnesota will have to be a desperate team tomorrow, but somehow I doubt they will be.

To be honest, the Badgers will also need a better effort tomorrow. We were not very crisp tonight and made a number of ill advised passes and flubbed on a few also. Just looked out of synch and at times, more than a little tired.

The first two periods were somewhat back in forth with each team dominating in the offensive zone at times. In the third, we employed the Eaves Duck and Cover shell strategy and Minnesota had it in our end for most of that.

Man I hate it when we go into the shell.

Because its just about best bar ever.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

Gotta love when people nitpick about typos. Great game last night. I wasn't very happy with the 3rd period, though. I don't like when Eaves sits on it and lets the other team control play when he has a lead, but luckily we got a nice rush with a perfect pass from Davies to Street to put the Goofers away.

I was also dissatisfied with the number of Badger penalties. We aren't going to win tonight if we commit that many, but luckily our PK was pretty good. It's to the point now, where I prefer 5 on 5 hockey over a power play for us, though. Our Power Play is that bad.

As great as Kengas was advertised to be, I thought Bennett was the better goalie. We'll see if he gets the nod tonight. My guess is that they'll give Gudmanson the start tonight because Bennett wasn't overwhelmingly good enough to reward him with another night between the pipes. We will see, though. A Gopher fan in front of me kept arguing with me about Minnesota and Wisconsin sports and then I politely reminded him who has more NCAA Hockey championships. That kept him quiet for a while. I can't wait to get back to the arena tonight.

I don't know that they intended to go into the shell. To me it looked more like the Badgers were dead on their feet.

I doubt it. Tons of blocked shots and solid goaltending will beat the Gophers every time. They can't score and there's too much evidence to support that to ignore it anymore.

MN has even a bigger problem, they can't pass.

I would agree with Gurtholfin regarding the Badgers, they played just well enough to win IMO. UW always seems, at least against MN, to have a knack of scoring shortly after their opponent to kill any momentum MN be gaining.

They can't chip the puck and get it down low and forecheck either.

We weren't lying about our defense. I'm not sure that it is a "defense for the ages" and I'm also not sure who said that, but our defense is as good as anyone's in the WCHA. Unfortunately, though, we haven't been as good on Saturday's so tonight's game should be a barn burner.

Past evidence would have me believe that some sort of defensive shell was employed, but I agree that it was made to look even worse because they looked completely gassed. Lots of sticks on knees between faceoffs and guys a half step behind on plays in that period.

Maybe Eaves had them run Elver on Friday just to remind them of the mountain they are trying to climb.

We were fortunate to win that game. Not because we aren't the better team, coz I think we are right now, but because of the third period.

On the bright side it shows some growth because I think we lose that game last season.

Better effort tonight = sweep.

We took 4 penalties to their 3. That may be the all time least amount of penalties ever in a game between these two schools. I would bet my lefty that there will be more than that for each team tonight.

To your point about our power play, YES, we should decline. Just kidding, one of them looked putrid, but the other two generated some decent chances. A couple of times Brendan moved down to the top of the circle and was wide open for a blast. Very similar to where they used to have Skille camp out, except he was at the left circle. That play has some potential. Just need to establish control in the zone. To me, that is where they really struggle.

I agree. The third period was scary, and the guy who scared me the most was Ramage (so much so, I didn't even notice Smith). He was running around frantically and making bad passes. Everytime he was out there, I was counting the seconds until he got back off.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

Wanna trade power plays? Last night MN was able to kill off most of theirs. ;)

Didn't you guys DOUBLE your production for the season last night. :D

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin.. the greatest rivalry in college hockey.

Michael Davies... when did he learn to backcheck? The yearly benchings may have finally sunk in.

And that assist in the third? Beautiful.

Yes, it was a fast game.

Did anyone else notice (3rd period, I think) one of the refs calling a penalty on the Badgers, and then go and look at the replay monitor. The announcer even announced it as "the play is under review". What was that????? Can they review whether or not they got a penalty call right? I don't think I've ever seen that before.

They were reviewing a possible gopher goal.
