Lead up to Sochi

Re: Lead up to Sochi

GF crowd should have enjoyed this game.

They did...they were really into it. The atmosphere was great. Although, I was surprised at how many empty seats there were for this game and at this venue. I would guess that the lower two bowls were 80-90% full...upper bowl obviously wasn't necessary.

Anyone know what the attendance was?

Re: Lead up to Sochi

None of these games count because they're exhibitions. Four Nations counts just a little more, because at least someone makes an effort to remember who wins that from year to year, and we finished third. So people can say the USA is gold-medal favorites or bronze-medal favorites, but it all comes down to how the team does in a few key games in February. The rest of these contests are scrimmages with people watching.

This is unadulterated reality. No bragging rights...just entertainment with some temporary highs/lows depending on the result of each game. It sure would make it more interesting if Sweden or Finland or Cameroon...anybody! was consistently competitive with these two teams. Two more consistently competitive teams would add a lot of complexity/interest.

Geez ARM lighten up will ya?
Tony, if I get any lighter, I'll float away.

Cameroon is actually better than the US and Canada combined, and only had North American conspiracy has kept them out of the games.

A crowd in the five thousands is actually very good for women's hockey in the U.S., especially when there isn't a concerted marketing effort, it's right before Christmas and likely conflicting with parties, and the game is on TV. The number of people that will plan a weekend around women's hockey is pretty small. Plus, given they are playing in St. Paul in a week, there is little incentive for people from this area to drive to Grand Forks.

Yeah, I thought the crowd looked really good on TV. For a meaningless exhibition in the middle of nowhere (no disrespect) and the other reasons you pointed out, that's quite a nice crowd.

I knew my hunch about Cameroon was right.

And I was going to mention this in a separate post but since you kind of touched on it here, I'll mention it here. Just noticed that I received an email from The Ralph last night about half an hour after the game-turned dust up ended. Good graphics with flags and the teams lined up on their respective blue lines (from another game)...thanking me for attending the game and their facility. And asking "What did you think?"...inviting the recipient to complete a survey!

The Ralph is on its game!

Re: Lead up to Sochi

Wow, big surprise, the Lamaroo's are really hacks. Debatable if the team really needs them.

Anyway, are these the same teams that will play in the Olympics? Is that in February? And they're playing consecutive games in December and January? That takes a lot of the starch out of it for me. Ya ya, I remember the Soviets playing the Americans.

Also, just heard they're playing at the X next week and my family will be in the cities. I looked up tickets and saw they were something like $27. Holy chit!!? For a women's, exhibition hockey game? Just wow. I also saw that under twelve years of age was half price. I guess that's the punchline.

Well...I know which side of the debate I'd be on. Especially vs. TC and their...uh...style of play.

We could use Schou in the lineup in my opinion.

LOL.

You think they're going to cut them and bring, what... 9 forwards to Sochi?

The attendance last night at the Ralph was actually a North Dakota record for a women's/girls hockey game in the state.

Did you hear the post-game comments from Team USA players and COACH about the fight that btw was incited by a clean body check, by no means was it cheap? (like the elbow to the head that caused the body check retaliation) And even if they were hacks, theres no way you cut either Lam. They no longer play for UND, they are American athletes that defended their American teammate.

You have no idea what you're talking about, the check and fight was response to an elbow by Jenner who actually caused a concussion to a USA player, two season ago. There's a history there. If you actually knew what you were talking about you might know this.

This blog post has the Jenner elbow in question. [click to view] Maybe you should think twice before spouting off. These two women you refer to as hacks are world class players.

I am not a proponent of fighting in hockey,” Katey Stone said. “I am proponent of standing up for yourself. If players are going to take cheap shots at our players, there’s going to be answer for that. We will not get pushed around. At the end of the day, we’ll prepare to play any game that we have to play. We’ll go hard, we’ll go clean, if the game gets out of hand, we’ll manage that as well.”

Re: Lead up to Sochi

a clean body check,

Context of the game people!!! There is no such thing in women's hockey. Sure, there's incidental contact all of the time in girl's hockey but that was purely malicious with an intent to injure.

Oh brother. <a href='http://www.easyfreesmileys.com/skype-emoticons.html' title='Skype Emoticons'><img src='http://www.easyfreesmileys.com/smileys/lol-049.gif' alt='Skype Emoticons' border='0'></a> When they're all washed up they can join the Marines I guess.

Yep the hit by Jenner on Pucci was dirty.

??
I don't think you've watched the Jenner elbow yet or......

BTW, body checking is a 2 minute penalty. It still WAS a clean check. Not a check from behind or boarding or charging....nothing malicious about it. Retaliatoryand on purpose, yes. What is malicious is that elbow!!!!!
