Lead up to Sochi

Re: Lead up to Sochi

Apparently the referee is from the Brad Shepherd school of officiating, where you just throw everybody into the box instead of trying to spend any time figuring out what actually happened.
Hanrahan? I think I heard the broadcast team say. She certainly looks familiar.

Is that our WCHA Hanrahan? Considering the opinions that most of us viewing games through western bias tinted glasses have about some of the people wearing the orange armbands at WCHA games it is interesting to me to note that the Greg Shepherd supervised WCHA officials only accept her as an AR.

Can we all agree the game was out of control at the end?

Ain't that the truth! I was watching Gigi closely and she did everything possible to stay out of the fray, yet they give her a major? A.J. and the play-by-play guy were pining for a change to add an extra referee when these two teams meet, and based on what's transpired in the last couple of games I would have to agree. But if they do make a change it should apply to all of the upcoming Olympic games, not just USA vs. Canada.

One and the same, and yes -- definitely out of control.

Also, I think the WCHA list is a little out of date. I know Reinen and Spivey have been wearing orange armbands this season.

As far as the referee was concerned, I thought it was out of control all the way. Earlier in the game, the players were more concerned about things like scoring/preventing goals, and once that became less of a priority, they started taking runs at each other.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

Before this conversation boils down to hockey I just want to throw in my appreciation for seeing this game on my big screen HD LCD. I pay and watch every time for the video streams of college (Gopher) games. It was just marvelous to see women's hockey with visual clarity generally reserved for the NHL and the Gopher men.

Agree 100%! It was a pleasure to watch in glorious high def! My only reservation is the upcoming 12/29 rematch at the X - how much will this affect attendance?

Quality of the video for the Canadian feed was nowhere near NHL caliber. Also interesting to note that they use the American broadcaster (Darwitz) to do the interviews with the players. The Canadian commentators (Black, Pounder and Botterill) were in a studio, most likely in Toronto.

I agree. Early in the game the whistle was non-existent. Several clear infractions were let go (both ways). That may have contributed to the players taking more liberties as the game went along.

You must have missed all the games that were played prior to December.
I agree. For some reason, fans of both sides in this series tend to have very short memories. There have been quite a few times where one side looks dominant -- until the next game, when the result is different. Side X is doing everything right, and side Y consists of complete bafoons. Then 60 minutes of hockey can reverse the perspective.

In the end, these are just games, played by two sides that are fairly evenly matched, as much as we tend to want to conclude more than that. In the short term, I'd imagine that Canada will start improving rapidly once its new coach learns more than the names of all of his players.

Stated earlier that IMHO the new coach with all his experience will be very good at managing his bench. There was a lot of camera time viewing the canuck bench on the TSN feed, and just by the visual you could tell the coach was very active in coaching and talking to his players. My take is the same as yours, next game could be very different. Not saying it will be, but it could be. Having said that, the US was showing it's superior speed last night, and as per my previous takes, that would make them the favorites in Sochi on the bigger ice surface.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

I missed the very end and am eagerly awaiting video, which will definitely come out, and will definitely go viral because people love to watch women's hockey players fight for some reason.

#America

EDIT: And here you go http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJmJcHOrwGs

That was fun to watch :) However, could someone please teach them how to fight? Like drop your sticks. The Lam twins are in every fight :roll eyes:

Just watched it again and thought Stone was smart to have her fighting line on the ice with 16 seconds to go.

Hehehe....we've got you right where we want you America!! :)

That might be the case although having watched a couple of these "tuneup matches" now it's very obvious that the US has a speed advantage. If and when Kessel is back the US would have the option to put her back on a line with Coyne and Decker which would really pose problems for Canada.

Those games don't count because we lost :D
None of these games count because they're exhibitions. Four Nations counts just a little more, because at least someone makes an effort to remember who wins that from year to year, and we finished third. So people can say the USA is gold-medal favorites or bronze-medal favorites, but it all comes down to how the team does in a few key games in February. The rest of these contests are scrimmages with people watching.
