Lead up to Sochi

Re: Lead up to Sochi

In a way it is unfortunate, but as I was just catching up on posts in this thread, with Good Morning America in the background, what do you think happened?

Yup, the brawl made the news with video, note of the final score, and the fact that they play again in St Paul next weekend. While I would prefer that highlights of goals and big saves had been sufficient to warrant air time, it seems that scraps like that at games end are what get the publicity. As they say "the only bad publicity is no publicity."

The Sochi marketing guys at NBC must love this stuff:

So maybe this is all a big conspiracy theory hatched at the highest levels of USA & Canada Hockey. The Woman's game needs buzz, attendance and a story line going into the Olympics. The IOC has already issued a few comments about the sport continuing. You have to admit "the fights" have generated great coverage and community discussion. We were at a Boys MN HS Hockey Game last night (Eastridge at Woodbury) and kids Pee Wees to HS students, College Kids home to watch, Parents, Friends and Grandparents were all talking about "the fight". More buzz about Olympic Women's Hockey than I can remember at a Boys Game ever.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

Wet blanket here...still the wrong way, or wrong reason to draw attention to the sport me thinks. No doubt those standing to benefit from the buzz and resulting potential increased viewer interest and numbers will exploit the melee.

From comments of national team players I've heard and read over the years regarding the rivalry I've concluded the dust-ups are initiated genuinely and not staged for purely promotional purposes. ;)

I was a little surprised to see a member of TC actually speaking with Darwitz between periods. ;)

Can't help but wonder what affect the officiating ya get in the Sochi games might have on a USA vs. Canada match-up...while recalling some extremely strict enforcement in previous Olympic tournaments where the slightest contact was whistled.

Found a list of officials for the Sochi games...in case you're interested:

Re: Lead up to Sochi

I also thought the refs handled the whole thing really poorly.
They called the delayed penalty on the JLam hit and then kind of ignored the ongoing pushing/shoving happening after it and let the game play on. They seemed unprepared for the obviously boiling pot and totally oblivious. The game had gotten chippier throughout the third period and it was clear this was where it was headed and the refs seemed to be the only ones not to know that. By the time whistles were blown and the refs intervened, it was too little, too late.

It's their job to keep that stuff managed and they just really failed in all aspects of it here.

Obviously that's just one aspect of it, but it's certainly part of the story/problem.

I was really surprised to see how much Decker was mixing it up. Another Badger fan said I was wrong, but I don't remember her getting in the middle so much. I see her more of show then tell, but again with this rivalry and the passions on both sides, she was chirping and getting physical in ways I don't remember when she was a Badger.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

By the way both Lam's are of 1/2 origin from Canada. They're Dad's side originates from a small community call Lamoureux north east of Edmontonn (45 mins away from Edm). There dad Jean-Pierre attended UND (79 - 83) back some time ago. I don't know if they have dual citizenship, but is this a case of Canadians beating up Canadians? haha

This is an old article, but still worth a read: http://si.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1165306/2/index.htm

They do. They were named to the U30 Select team in 2006 so they would be "carded" as US players.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

We both looked at each other immediately afterward and were in total agreement that slow moving Pucci (at the time) just stepped in front of a speeding truck and the consequences were what you would expect...inertia and the laws of physics take over.

the same thing could be said of the incident in Burlingame. the goalie was moving to her right in Lamoureux's path, the Canucks reaction to it, grabbing a person from behind was dirty, and chicken-poo

and their is a lot of contact with goalies in the WCHA, rarely does anything come of it, I understand what the rule in Canada is, and that's the problem, if the Canucks want to play that way, as Stone said, Team USA will play any way the Canucks want to

it is a bit ironic that you Canucks are crying about playing dirty, you are the ones that invented it, promote it, and make sure it lives on

As a non-Canuck, I encourage all Canucks to please consider the source of this post before making the decision to respond to it.

My take on that incident is that Szabados deserved an Oscar for her performance in the best supporting role...(but I could be wrong).

On the rest of your ridiculous assumption, as a self respecting pirate I'm necessarily a sovereign citizen and owe no allegiance to any country.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

I just watched the game last night, really poor officiating. I felt like I was watching a wcha game. Knight got CFB'ed in the 3rd period, no call. I think that set the stage at the end for some revenge for her and she took it at the end of the game, though when the US player crushed the Canuck at the end it set the whole thing off.

I like the purity of the women's game and it's getting too bogged down with physical play at the college level and now that's contaminating the Olympic play. There needs to be a lot more strict enforcement of the rules from here on out.

Funny, seeing as how Hanrahan -- the referee last Friday night -- is a WCHA linesman, not a regular referee. She's going to Sochi, but as a linesman.

I agree the ref obviously let a lot go (both ways which is all I usually ask of a ref). Lots of clutches and grabs and physcial play was allowed. That kind of game favors which team? Final score 4-1 USA.

I think the Canadians will be the last to compalin about the official letting things go.

As for JLam's hit, it was clearly deliberate and for a purpose. It wasn't the ref's fault. It was because of the lack of supplemental discipline rules (or failure to enforce them if they have them). These players are smart. If you don't have supplemental rules, both teams are going to have to live with it.

A question for anyone who might know... What are the rules for supplemental discipline in international football (soccer) friendlies (i.e. non-tournament games)? Those type of games are played a lot more often than in ice hockey, but that would seem to me to be a good guideline.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

USA leads 1-0 after one. If not for a premature whistle  it would be 2-0....puck was never frozen and was clearly in. I know, it's only an exhibition, but you still want to see legitimate goals count. The U.S. did a nice job killing an extended 5 on 3 Canadian power play, but they got a half-dozen gifts as Canada cleared the zone for them on missed wide-angle shots that went around the boards.
