Lead up to Sochi

Re: Lead up to Sochi

I think Stack got robbed...should have been her second goal.

She was robbed, I had only a slightly worse view of it than the official did, and the replay from the scoreboard showed it should have been a goal. She was not in the crease, that's for sure. And it wasn't a premature whistle.

I wondered at first whether she had knocked it in with her hand. I didn't think the replay in the building was entirely definitive about that.

Yeah, I agree, except the officials like to use the "it isn't when the whistle blows, but when the motion to bring the whistle to the lips starts" to rationalize/justify waving off a goal.

so was that the official ruling?

if so, it is even more puzzling, it appeared to me the US player shot/passed the puck at the goal hoping something good would happen
it did, Stack who was outside the crease on the backside banged the puck, which was loose a yard from everything else but her, into the wide open net

why she would blow the whistle makes no sense, there wasn't enough time elapsed for anyone to do anything except react
I thought she waved it off because of a player in the crease, the only possibility I thought possible, but Stack was clearly outside it and nobody else was in

oh well, normally I think of a shootout win as winning Miss Congeniality, in this case justice was served, it was a US win

The term they use is "dead in the head" as soon as they intend to blow the whistle the play is considered dead. I've had many dealing with this ref and she is terrible. Always trying to inject herself into the game. Not surprised at the way she officiated this game.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

Vetter played a rock solid game, she looked better than Schauss did the other day.

The Ref totally blew that Stack goal, and unevenly called penalties, but at least she tried to make calls.

Have to agree with A.J. - they need to go to a two-ref system at that level of play.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

I couldn't tell for sure from where I was sitting and I have not been able to find a box score.

Was it Blair? It looked like Blair.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

Yeah, that call didn't make any sense at all.

I was lucky enough to be credentialed, so I was actually standing behind the net taking pictures (think where the zambonis come in and out) for this goal. I and every ice cleaner, zamboni driver and med guy have no idea what the call was. It wasn't well explained. Coach Stone didn't have an answer in post-game interviews, either. The puck was clearly across the line, though it took a second to make it there. She was not in the crease. I have no explanation for it.

I'm hoping to have my recap up in the morning, but in the meantime I have a slideshow of the pictures I took up for your viewing pleasure.

A few limited takes on what I saw:
*Kendall Coyne is even quicker than you think she is. Her wheels are kind of nuts.
*The whole team was slow, slogging and had a bit of a hangover. Despite the win, I feel less confident following this game. The energy just wasn't there.
*Near the end all the Twitter commentary was about how great the Canada goalie was doing - and she was great in those final 10 minutes - but prior to that Labonte was giving up juicy rebounds and open back posts all night long. Vetter was solid the entire game and when US was even softer in the third, it was Vetter that kept them in it.
*US wants to play a run and gun and use their speed. The only way Canada keeps them controlled is by trying to slow the whole game down. *They did a better job of that yesterday - they controlled between the blue lines and kept the long passes springing the faster offensive breaks to a minimum.
*The Lams-Duggan line was almost a non-factor last night after being the stars in Grand Forks. It speaks well for the team that even without them making an impact, US scored and made plays and crashed the net.
*I feel like I have 100 pictures of Hilary Knight - that's not because I have a girl crush, but because she was consistently in front of the net and on the glass in front of me. It felt like that line was on the ice three times longer than any other.

Here's my recap - it comes with a decided Wisconsin bent based on my blogging affiliation.

USA WINS! 3-2 is the final score in Toronto, and they take the series, 4 games to 2.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

Good third period. Canada had no chemistry for the first two periods and generally for the last four games...maybe some of that can be chalked up to the coaching situation, maybe not. A lack of chemistry certainly is not an issue for the US.

Very impressed with Lacasse...she had no chance on the first two goals (terrible defensive breakdown) and made several tough saves tonight. Anyone check out her wheels in the last couple of minutes when she went off for the extra attacker? Man, she can move...she could give some of the forwards a few tips.

I said this a few years ago and have not changed my mind since...Knight would be my first draft pick. She was everywhere tonight. And have always been extremely impressed with Spooner's goal scoring ability especially one on one...another one tonight.

Irwin played an impressive game...took a few pucks for the team...the last one where there is no padding which looked quite serious for a while...won the final face off with seven seconds left in an effort to tie the game but no one there to claim it before the buzzer sounded.

Duggan seems to be in the middle of the contentious circumstances more often than not...since Grand Forks from what I noticed. Don't recall her being this aggressive at UW. And the Lams were eerily quiet tonight...M-Lam was busier but only noticed J-Lam twice.

Stone was none too happy about the too many men call.

And Wickenheiser looked like she needed an ambulance after the handshakes. Seriously.

All in all it looks like Canada has the US right where they want them.

(Forgot to mention...apparently 17,000+ seats occupied tonight).

Official attendance 17,227. Not bad for a women's hockey exhibition game--actually surprisingly high, given that the game was televised live on TSN (Canadian equivalent of ESPN) and the cheapest ticket prices were above that of NHL tickets in many cities.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

The US fans are quieter than the Lams were last night. I take it that the game was not televised in the US?

Re: Lead up to Sochi

The game was televised in the US on Universal Sports Network. I believe it is part of the NBC network. I happened to have it as part of my Direc TV sports package. It was a very exciting game to watch. Canada came back strong in the 3rd period. However, Team USA was the better team in the first two periods, and IMO was the better team overall. Too much speed for Canada to deal with -- especially in Sochi on the big ice. Hilary Knight is a beast!! Best player on EITHER team...

Re: Lead up to Sochi

The game was televised on NBC Universal. I have the expanded sports package with FIOS so I have seen most of the games. The broadcast had a Canadian spin so I think it may have been the TSN feed. ESPNBA doesn't cover hockey here in the states like it's counterpart does in Canada.
I agree with the assessments about the game. Canada came out flying and took it to the US in the first. TC was very undisciplined in the second period and the game almost got away from them. 2 power goals turns out to be the difference. Very strong push by TC in the third. Although I felt many of the call (both ways) were ticky tacky calls I get why the ref called it so closely. I don't expect TC to play that way in Sochi. US looks solid up front but I have real questions on D with this team. Both goals were scored as a result of defensive breakdowns.
