Lead up to Sochi

Re: Lead up to Sochi

I just watched the game last night, really poor officiating. I felt like I was watching a wcha game. Knight got CFB'ed in the 3rd period, no call. I think that set the stage at the end for some revenge for her and she took it at the end of the game, though when the US player crushed the Canuck at the end it set the whole thing off.

I like the purity of the women's game and it's getting too bogged down with physical play at the college level and now that's contaminating the Olympic play. There needs to be a lot more strict enforcement of the rules from here on out.

No sense repeating it. I concur with what Timothy said

Re: Lead up to Sochi

As a non-Canuck, I encourage all Canucks to please consider the source of this post before making the decision to respond to it.

Not going there. Defending the canuck position on this board and subject is a losing proposition from the get go, so why start.
(Those who tried in the past had to bow out eventually, some more gracefully than others)

I see that Watchorn is not playing, and Birchard is in the lineup, and got an assist. I thought Birchard was cut, did Watchorn get injured?

Cdn announcers said she has a concussion. Dineen is using Birchard in all situations. She has looked pretty good.

Nice third period recovery by Canada. Man does Wick look old.

I've seen and heard enough about Kevin Dineen to last a lifetime. Stay tuned for a special hour long special on you got it - Kevin Dineen....geez enough already.

So I assume Birchard is on the team until Watchorn returns? How severe was the concussion, any word from commentators?

They gave the impression that she was being used as an alternate only and that she must have mixed emotions about playing.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

Not a great effort today by the USA. Their decision-making was not as good as it was in Grand Forks, and their passing was not as consistently sharp. Credit Canada's game plan for some of that. They did a much better job of clogging up the neutral zone, making it much tougher for the USA to connect on multiple tape-to-tape passes to open players that we got to see a lot of in the last game. It was good to see the Americans finally take control at the very end, and they got the better of the play in the overtime, but overall it seemed that the U.S. did not have much jump in their skates for long stretches in the second and third periods. Hopefully they can sustain a higher energy level for the entire 60 minutes in their final tuneup on Monday, and carry that over when they go to Sochi.

This is one of those you never know situations. Clearly she is the first alternate on D, so if someone does get hurt, she might get the chance to go. Not sure what the deadline is to replace injured players on your roster, but fairly sure it is fairly close to the start of the main event. At any rate if you are in her shoes, you take every opportunity you get to show what you can do. You just never know if it can pays off. Four years ago Wakefield was the first alternate. She never made it to the main event back then, but is now a regular on the squad.

Read that attendance in St. Paul was a shade over 9000 today.

What is the capacity of the Excel? I imagine the upper bowl was unused...maybe upper two bowls?

The glimpses I got of it...it looked jammed.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

USA leads 1-0 after one. If not for a premature whistle  it would be 2-0....puck was never frozen and was clearly in. I know, it's only an exhibition, but you still want to see legitimate goals count.

I think Stack got robbed...should have been her second goal.

The lower bowl was mostly full, though there were empty patches at the ends. There were some people in the club level but the upper levels weren't opened at all.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

Capacity is little over 18,500

From Wikipedia:

"March 9, 2012 : The Minnesota State High School League Boys hockey tournament again set a new attendance record during the 2012 AA semifinal session. Hill-Murray and Moorhead played in the first game followed by Benilde St-Margaret's and Lakeville South in front of a crowd of 19,893."

Previous that the all-time attendance record for a hockey game at the X was:

"March 8, 2008 : The Minnesota State High School League Boys hockey tournament set a new attendance record during the AA semifinal session. Edina and Benilde-St. Margaret's played in the first game followed by Roseau and Hill-Murray in front of a crowd of 19,559."

Not sure how the HSL does it in hockey, but in other sports the announced attendance is for the day. I'm guessing the Lakeville South and BSM fans showed up as the first game was ending and some of the HM and Moorhead fans left before the second game started. I doubt there was 19,893 fans in the building at the same time, except maybe between games.

Not sure how they do it exactly, but that's what they are reporting as the all-time attendance records. They've also hosted many college tournaments there, like the WCHA Final Five and NCAA Regionals where you had one game after another that were officially "sold out" but did not set records.

Re: Lead up to Sochi

On the official website Xcel Energy Center reports seating capacity for hockey as 18,300.

Xcel Energy Center drew 19,327 fans for the Frozen Four final in 2002 MN vs. Maine
paid attendance was 4 additional fans from 2 nights previous when MN played Michigan

the seating capacity may be 18,300 but there are designated and numbered standing room locations around the perimeter
which BTW, most were occupied Saturday, although I believe those fans simply preferred to stand rather than take their seat
because the view of the entire ice surface is very good from them
