Friars Hockey 22-23: Everybody Gets A Thread

Friars get a hot NU Huskies team coming into Schneider tonight. NU just beat BU in opening round of Beanpot and it looks like their AA goalie is in good form. Doubt they will be looking past the Friars to Monday night Beanpot final.

NU and UCONN both on the precipice of the PWR, so big game for NU tonight to not slip back. They are also still chasing BU for HE first place. Believe they are pretty much fully healthy now which they weren't when PC played them to open HE schedule a number of months ago now. It will be a challenge for the Friars tonight.

Be interesting to see if Moynihan and Valente are sat again.

Agree with this post. Hope PC can pull off the same upset that the US team achieved against Canada in the gold medal game in the 2021 WJC final. Levi was the goalie for Canada in that game and had played flawless hockey prior to that. Of course they only scored 2 goals against him but the US goalie got the shutout. So PC will need a great effort by their goalie and D corp tonight! As my German born colleague years ago said, “could be happened”

You score three goals against the best goalie in the conference in the last 10 years or so but your senior captain decides to get himself thrown out of the game, you get what happened on Friday. This loss is squarely on the players and the coaches deserve blame for letting their "star" players continue to act like they do.

PC has played now 11 overtime games in 30 games played. They have been living on the edge all season and finally some of the luck they were getting earlier in the year has turned since the start of the calendar year.

But remember, Nate "likes this team."

Old man yells at clouds, tune in at 11 for more.

This is the Providence College Hockey thread on the Fan Forum.

Meriam-Webster Definition of a Fan
an enthusiastic devotee (as of a sport) usually as a spectator. : an ardent admirer or enthusiast

These are the Zlax rules for being an enthusiastic admirer of Providence College Hockey;
  • Only post after a loss, a bad play or an adverse turn of events
  • Seek someone to blame in almost every post
  • Exaggerate the negative, ignore the positive
  • Misstate results, leave out context
  • Hope that readers agree with him/her, act surprised when nobody does.
I went to the game with my wife on Friday and was very impressed with the energy and skill of the PC team against a very good Northeastern squad - Devon Levi in particular. After Chmelars scored goal 3 early in the third period I expected that would be an insurance goal at best. The first Northeastern goal midway in the 3rd was a kind of a fluke as the puck flittered in the air after a deflection and came down softly behind the goalie. Then the major on Crozier after a review. It looked like Crozier was hurt and needed to get off the ice just before the review, so it may have been getting called on a retaliation which is often the case. Then the refs did not call a flagrant tripping penalty against Northeastern with about a minute left in the 3 on 3 OT. Both refs were looking at the play and my interpretation was that each was waiting for the other to call it. It seemed players on both teams expected to hear the whistle too, but that never came. If I knew the game would end as an official tie before it started I would have been OK with that, but after a commanding 3-0 lead with a half period to go I was very disappointed, one of those ties that feels like a loss. Just knew that Zlax would be the first poster so that was salt in the wound. Had they won instead, one of the best benefits would have been that there would not be a post by Zlax.

There's really not much more to be said about our resident complainer. I kinda feel bad, but he's sucking up all the attention he's probably not getting at home and using this thread for it instead. Sad human.

Missed the game Friday and could only get it on radio instead. I've watched a game for every conference team's home broadcast on ESPN+ over the course of the season. Varying quality, either the announcing or the camera work, but think that Mike Logan is definitely top 3 in the conference. He gets it. You call the game, you can show enthusiasm for the home team but some are so over the top, acting like the home players got shot crashing into the boards and all use of physicality should result in an automatic ejection. I'm not naming any particular one as any invaders of the thread will probably just pounce on me and say PK is biased. Nope. He does a great job calling the game, as a couple others are really enjoyable for other schools as well. I think the Maine broadcast was crappy quality at times, not necessarily the announcing but the broadcast of it, gonna say more the first game than the second one really.

Well another tie last night after regulation but this time the Friars come thru on the 3on3 to gain the extra point (and NCAA recognized win, not that we are thinking much about that right now).

PC had the lead twice in this game only to give it up less than a minute later both times, the second on a PP with 55 seconds left and UML having their goalie pulled. The penalty came on a pass down the middle by UML from their defensive zone to the PC blue line that was not covered well by PC, Friars scramble to keep the UML player from going in alone on Svedeback but I think Crozier ended up with the penalty hook or hold as he caught up with the UML player, 2:14 to go. UML also tried to get a 5min major called on PC in the scramble after the save similar to what happened last week against NU but this time the refs would not call it.

Both goalies made some big stops in this game. One of the few games where PC was actually outshot by their opponent.

Friars come up with 2 points and move on to TSongas arena tonight for the rematch.

It was another good game to watch, great rush in OT by Yoder who has been really good when he has the puck with some space, (just a little in this case), in front of the net. Good luck tonight.

Friars can't keep it going losing 2-1 at UML.

Other than a few games this year, scoring continues to be a problem for this team. Also, second night in a row UML had more shots on net than the Friars, something that hasn't happened much this year.

So 2 games left against BU in 2 weeks. Time off to reflect on their play and see if they can turn things around in the last 2 an then HE playoffs. Right now Friars are looking at a 6, 7, or 8th place finish depending on what happens next week when other teams with games in hand on them play and what they do. I don't think they can get by UML or UCONN and both have tie breakers over them. BC and Maine could push them from the current 6th spot down which makes the BU weekend key for getting points. So next 2 weekends will shake out what the HE tourney will look like.

Four straight years of not being in position for a NCAA bid with the one of the highest paid coaches in the country....No other program would accept this.

And Zlax still has that psycho fantasy about Nate Leaman. You might want to get counseling for this. I know a couple good ones.

Was getting really worried that we wouldn’t outshoot another team the rest of the season. Phew! Good job of coaching tonight, Nate!

That loss goes squarely on Nate.

Pathetic coaching by Nate for giving Roden a game for no reason at all. He did the same thing last year with Cain against Brown but they were able to win.

This just illustrates the incredible dishonesty of Zlax. This post was from Thanksgiving weekend and posted after PC's first home loss of the year. Finally giving Zlax his opening to post more nonsense. PC's record prior to this Brown game was 9-2-3 with the only two losses away against Denver. Additional missing context was that Svedeback was sick the prior weekend and Roden played his 1st two games as his replacement, he won both games and had a shutout in one. Giving Roden another start the next weekend against a pretty weak opponent while giving his starting goalie more rest is something most smart coaches would do.

Zlax is in his glory now because of an out of the ordinary poor second half of the season for Providence. I am surprised by these recent results myself, but I am confident it is not a reflection of bad coaching. He cynically states "sign me up for more losing Leaman".

Here is a some context;

Nate Leaman's number of seasons coaching PC Hockey = 12. Seasons with a winning record 11. That is a stunning amount of non-losing, so yes sign me up too!
