Friars Hockey 22-23: Everybody Gets A Thread

Friars take a big hit to the PWR losing to Brown 3-2 on Saturday. Not a good second period for Roden or the team. Going to take a lot of work to make up for this loss.

That loss goes squarely on Nate.

PC was flat against St. Lawrence but snuck out the win while Svedback was outstanding in both games. Pathetic coaching by Nate for giving Roden a game for no reason at all. He did the same thing last year with Cain against Brown but they were able to win.

Friars have played in 8 OT games out of 17 games played. Reminds me of the soccer team this past season. Other than Denver, they have not lost in the 3 on 3 OT, only in shootouts.

1 game left before the break against a good Merrimack team (might be the oldest team in the conference). Merrimack is ahead on them in PWR and just behind them in HE standings. so a big game to end the first half. Friars have to play Merrimack twice in No. Andover on back-to-back nights in January. 6 straight HE games on the road after opening up with UNH at home in January. Friars in Dartmouth Christmas tourney (where they could face Merrimack as well) at end of December, play Yale the first night. Dartmouth plays Merrimack.

Hearing Brett B. is out for Saturday, should be back for the Dartmouth tourney.

Friars are back on the ice tomorrow afternoon against Yale at the Dartmouth Ledyard Tourney. Game on ESPN+.

Needless to say a must win situation as they return to the hockey wars.

Win tomorrow probably play Merrimack again Saturday (unless Dartmouth pulls off a big upset).

Friars beat Yale 3-0 then come back on Saturday to beat Merrimack 6-1. Big weekend for frosh Schimek, named MVP of the tourney.

Two Friars hurt, Richard in Yale game and Duran in Merrimack game. Hopefully nothing serious and back on the ice against UNH this Friday.

Well that sucked last night. UNH could have put a early fork in PCs NCAA chances (of course many games left) after the dud the Friars put up last night. 9 goals last week then come home and get shutout. UNH first HE win too. UGH! Friars were without 3 of their better players, Richard, Duran and Chemlar. Now they are on the road for the rest of January, 2 OOC games starting with Army tomorrow and a game at Princeton on 17th. 2 at Merrimack next weekend and 2 at Maine the end of the month.

Another weak performance losing the lead 3 times in this one. Last one was tough as Ruicka called for a penalty with 2:30 to go in the game. Second power play goal for Army to tie it up. No scoring in OT. Game ends up 3-3 tie. (Army did win the shootout gut it doesn't mean anything).

Friars are now behind the 8 ball. 5 more games on the road this month. Looking more like another non NCAA year unless they can get hot and win HE Tourney, something Leaman teams have yet to do.

Doesn't help that all of HE have struggled since the break, PWR rankings for HE have gone in the wrong direction.

PC now #20 in the PW. Only 3 HE teams remain above 16. Svedeback has yet to steal a game. If PC does not surge during the rest of the season (or even if they do), they may need to win HE to get a bid. That probably is not happening with this team.

Steal a game? I would say he stole the St. Lawrence game. He is FAR from the problem on this team. Blaming the goaltender when you lose 2-0 against the worst team in the conference is tough.

The blame needs to lay right at the feet of Nate Leaman who is on his way to four straight years (the COVID year they were not going to make it) of missing the NCAA Tournament. This was inexcusable under Pooley, Army, McShane, etc....so there should be some major heat on him as he is one of the top paid coaches in the entire nation.

I don't blame Svedeback totally, but being part of this team he is also is part of the problem. I suppose as a freshman he should be cut more slack, but he's given up some pretty weak goals and his sub-par performance on 12/10 vs. Merrimack cost PC the game. I agree with your take on Leaman; he helped bring the program back to national prominence, but perhaps his time at PC should come to an end sooner than later.

Well here we go again, you can count on no peep from Zlax after good results like the Dartmouth Holiday Tourney Championship, but pouncing when the chance arises. Obvious negative bias year after year, if not the coach then a player. Nice to see the tweet yesterday from Kris Mayotte congratulating Vinny Desharnais after being called up to the Edmonton Oilers. "This is absolutely incredible. From only dressing half the games his freshman year at PC to the captain of a frozen four team. Now NHL... What a story." To Zlax it was always a jab for being a "traffic cone" but Vinny got better and better so he had to find a new target.

Continuous positive results for Nate despite his two year term as head coach of the USA World Junior Team. Didn't notice the congratulatory post on the gold medal win over Canada in the 20-21 WJC. That Canadian team had 18 1st round draft NHL picks and the US was a big underdog. The coaches for the USA program get a very nominal stipend so I assume there is a significant patriotic component and pride in being selected by USA Hockey to participate. It is also a great way to popularize NCAA hockey and the Providence program. Savy people would notice the priceless value of that I would think. Nate and Providence were mentioned continuously during the national telecasts, including the current tournament that just ended. I assume that Jaroslav Chmelar might be a Friar now because of how well Nate represented the value of the NCAA route for hockey player development. He is a true Freshman and played extremely well for Czechia in the entire tournament, if you watched you may have noticed that he came very close to having the winning goal in the final against Canada for his team in OT. Not sure if the same connection might apply to freshmen Philip Svedeback and Liam Valente but since they are both from Sweden it might well be the case. I recently saw a tweet about a European player who just committed to North Dakota where he mentioned that the performance of the USA gold medal team was the reason he selected the NCAA route.

I posted this chart last year and have updated now for the partial season. [TABLE="width: 501"]

Hopefully Duran and Richard will be back from injury soon and Chmelar might have really benefited from his nice tournament. Also wanted to recognize the great start Bennet Schimek has had, could be a major contributor to the program over time. Lots to look forward to the rest of this season and into the future. It is not an accident that BC wanted to hire Nate. Personally glad he stayed.

The last eight games this season Providence is 2-3-3. One of those wins is against Yale which is currently 56th in the PWR with a 2-10-3 record. And include the fact PC was likely going to miss the tourney in 2020 with a 16-12-3 and a 10-11-3 record in Hockey East.

I'm back after being away for years on the boards and i see Exlax is still whining. I guess winning a NC isn't good enough.Exlax to the feminine product aisle.lol

This will be the eighth season since the national title. They will have missed the NCAA Tournament in four straight seasons. Is that good or bad?

You would be the only poster in the country to pound on its coach for not making a tournament that wasn’t held, (in any sport), especially if there was still a chance using regular criteria to be a participant if it were held. All this does is further highlight why you are not a fan, but rather some sort of negative nellie who relishes a chance to put people down. PC has had some very good hockey coaches over the years, but statistically Nate is the best, that is just a fact. Odd to have such a fan who only chips in to contribute negative observations and is silent when there is good news to report. At least try a little more balance so to be fair.

So seven tournaments held since the national championship and they will have missed the last three straight. Is that a good trend or bad? It is a very bad trend from a program that less than ten years ago won a national championship.

Is this for real? 2019 was the sixth straight year making the NCAA tournament, do you know how rare that is even at schools that have all the traditional advantages? Providence has not done that ever before, only a handful of teams ever have. It may never happen again at PC but it looks like the team is rebuilding nicely and moving in the right direction. New problems, like having your best players leaving earlier than ever, will make this challenge more difficult than before. Look around, we have a great coach and it’s a process. A mid-season mini slump exacerbated by key injuries is not the basis for alarm. BC wanted to solve the new college hockey environment challenges by hiring Nate. My sense is they were on to something. I think what you are doing isn’t fair and doesn’t reflect a high character so as I said before try to be more balanced and even handed.
