Friars Hockey 22-23: Everybody Gets A Thread

Is this for real? 2019 was the sixth straight year making the NCAA tournament, do you know how rare that is even at schools that have all the traditional advantages? Providence has not done that ever before, only a handful of teams ever have. It may never happen again at PC but it looks like the team is rebuilding nicely and moving in the right direction. New problems, like having your best players leaving earlier than ever, will make this challenge more difficult than before. Look around, we have a great coach and it’s a process. A mid-season mini slump exacerbated by key injuries is not the basis for alarm. BC wanted to solve the new college hockey environment challenges by hiring Nate. My sense is they were on to something. I think what you are doing isn’t fair and doesn’t reflect a high character so as I said before try to be more balanced and even handed.

I see a coach that is one of the highest paid in the ENTIRE country that has a team right now on the outside of the NCAA Tournament for the THIRD straight season. (I consider it four).

Look at BU and what happened when they missed the tournament in two out of three years? We are looking at a worse streak right now.

I think you are a lost soul on your own island. Good luck.

Here is another chart showing just Frozen Four participation since Nate Leaman has been the PC head coach starting in 2012. Since he was the coach at Union in their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2011, I thought it would be good to list them right after Providence as Nate recruited many of the Union players that played key roles in the following three years of their success in the NCAA's, (including Matt Bodie and Shayne Gostisbehere among others who played big roles in their 2014 National Championship). If Union and Providence are added together to see the impact of Nate's work, look at what you have. Only 2 college coaches in the entire country have equaled this level of success in the Frozen Four.

I didn't have time to research the additional 12 schools that participated in the NCAA Tournament each year during this period, but Providence made a total of 6 out of 10 of the NCAA Ice Hockey Tournaments since Nate started at Providence and Union was in 4 straight from 2011-2014.

I am not giving up on 2023 just yet, would love to see them pull this off too!

I'd say the Friars look pretty decent tonight at Lawlor...

Let's see if they can follow it up with another good one on the road in North Andover...Got to believe Merrimack will come out guns a blazing after having been blown out 3 out of the last 4 games they have played and the fourth was a 3-3 come from behind tie game against Yale. Last 2 games 6-2 loss to Brown and 8-3 to PC, were at home, let's continue the home loss streak for them tonight. Go Friars!

I don't get excited with Mr. Zlax comments anymore, he is what he is.

Yikes! That was reminiscent of the type of beating that the Friars would lay down on my Warriors back in the mid '70's when the Wilson brothers were there and Merrimack was DII (yes, I'm that old). 4-6 on the PP, and 5 out of 5 on the PK is a good recipe for winning games. Hope MC can turn it around tonight.

They followed that up with getting shutout by Merrimack and losing in overtime to a very average Princeton team. This looks to be another lost season for the Friars.

Hockey East now has 1 team in the top 15 of PWR, BU at 6. UCONN is next at 16. Pretty sad especially after the good early season start in the OOC schedules for the league. Going to be hard to make up ground in PWR with in-league games left and only one team worth much in PWR as of now.

Friars are up in the winter wonderland of Maine for 2 this weekend, 2 more or less must wins and a tough get in their band box. Leaman this week said team is healthy, should have Richard and Kelly back on the blueline for the weekend. I though Scheimek the defenseman played pretty well in replacing them especially using his size and strength and getting his first games in as a Friar. 9 games left all in the league, a potential of 27 points. Losses or ties this weekend could (will) close out any potential at-large opportunity (meaning HET or bust last hope). Now if they can only get the PP going back to what it was at the start of the year.

Thanks for keeping the thread going 73. Will S. came in mid-season last year and had a few appearances, thought he looked good then too. Tough to crack the D Corp lineup, bet we see Richard in the NHL in the future, will be good to have him back in the Friars lineup, hope he is 100%. Looking for an end of season push and now is when that should start.

Lost Game 1 at Maine....Leaman is one of the highest paid coaches in the entire nation and the results on the ice are not showing that at all.

Now it's win the HE title (something Leaman has never done) or it's another year of missing the NCAA tournament. Right now this team is just not that good, and perhaps their early season success was an anomaly.

I wonder how many of your posts have LEAMAN in them. Do you have pictures and articles of him taped all over the walls of your home?

The guy gets far too much credit and gets zero criticism on here besides myself. He is responsible for this team taking a massive slide over the last four seasons. The players are not living up to their drafted position, playing better in the pros than ever in college, etc.

Well you can count another loss in Maine, 3-0 tonight. Friars with 52 shots on net and can't get one of them by the Maine goalie. Give up 2 PP goals by Maine, so even the PK has been bad since the break. 1-5-1 in January. Oh and 0 for their last 18 Power Plays.

I doubt we see any of this senior class back next year for their COVID year.

:(

You might not see the head coach back either with him always trying to get NHL jobs...

More fact/logic free criticism from our famously negative poster.

Included in the "massive" slide is a season with 22 wins and an average % that is higher than any other coach Providence has had in the modern era, (except Lamoriello whose career average % is about a half point higher than these last three years). I wonder if how each school responded to Covid concerns during this period was a factor, I would not be surprised if to their credit PC was more cautious than most. Last year the only reason they didn't get into the NCAA Tournament was that Michigan, (if I remember correctly) bowed out due to a Covid outbreak a day too late for them to put PC in to replace them.

As to "playing better in the pros than ever in college", that is just a ludicrous comment. I assume that slipped in there to defend the merciless smearing of players by Zlax, players that turned out to be very good as they progressed through the program. According to NHL research I have seen, the peak performance years for NHL players is mid to late 20's after which age tends to cause declines in this physically grueling sport. I would think it is rare indeed for a college player that makes the NHL to not be better in the pros than they were in college since they are playing against older, stronger and better caliber players.

Every time I see a post by Zlax I know it will be a negative, nasty and biased blast. How lucky we are that the general poster is more fair and self aware. Still waiting for a positive post to celebrate a good performance, decision or event - something, anything not negative.

I wonder how many of your posts have LEAMAN in them. Do you have pictures and articles of him taped all over the walls of your home?

lol yeah the forum complainer does give off a creepy old man vibe. Good for him for being good at something, I guess.
