Friars Hockey 22-23: Everybody Gets A Thread

More fact/logic free criticism from our famously negative poster.

Included in the "massive" slide is a season with 22 wins and an average % that is higher than any other coach Providence has had in the modern era, (except Lamoriello whose career average % is about a half point higher than these last three years). I wonder if how each school responded to Covid concerns during this period was a factor, I would not be surprised if to their credit PC was more cautious than most. Last year the only reason they didn't get into the NCAA Tournament was that Michigan, (if I remember correctly) bowed out due to a Covid outbreak a day too late for them to put PC in to replace them.

As to "playing better in the pros than ever in college", that is just a ludicrous comment. I assume that slipped in there to defend the merciless smearing of players by Zlax, players that turned out to be very good as they progressed through the program. According to NHL research I have seen, the peak performance years for NHL players is mid to late 20's after which age tends to cause declines in this physically grueling sport. I would think it is rare indeed for a college player that makes the NHL to not be better in the pros than they were in college since they are playing against older, stronger and better caliber players.

Every time I see a post by Zlax I know it will be a negative, nasty and biased blast. How lucky we are that the general poster is more fair and self aware. Still waiting for a positive post to celebrate a good performance, decision or event - something, anything not negative.

Odd you didn’t include 2019-2020 in there with the 16-12-6 record with a sub .500 hockey East record at 10-11-3. Stop making excuses for him as they have not qualified or been in position to qualify for the ncaa tournament since 2018-2019.

Would Cooley get off easy with missing the postseason for three straight years? Absolutely not.

It is difficult to reason with someone who is so determined to prove themselves right regardless of the fact that their position is not supported by facts. Since you mentioned Ed Cooley, here is another chart that demonstrates the close similarity between the success of Coach Leaman and Coach Cooley over their careers at PC if appearances in NCAA Tournaments is what you want to use;

I think the PC administration is justifiably pleased with the coaches they hired in 2011 for the two premier sports programs. As you probably realize, the coach represents the College in many ways, not only by developing the young men on the team, but also by representing the principles of the College in general. Both of these coaches do a fine job in all of these respects.

There is no single standard, such as the one you have harped on recently, that requires that a team be selected to compete in the NCAA Tournament in consecutive years. If there was, even the best coaches in College Hockey would be fired frequently. There is some irrational tick that keeps you on this negative track and won't let you off. Any chance that you can find another thread to "contribute" to.

Facts are facts. Leaman brought the Friars back to national prominence (remember the Tim Army years?). PC got some lucky breaks in 2015, making it to the tournament as the 16th seed (thanks Minnesota), being seeded at the regional in Providence, and then winning it all in Boston (thanks to Matt O'Connor's flub and Jack Eichel losing a key face-off). Then they ran into the UMD gauntlet in 2019. However with success comes higher expectations and criticism. Leaman was busy with the World Juniors. The NCAA screwed the Friars in 2021 by selecting an inferior and eventually Covid-stricken Notre Dame team over them. 2021-2022 had a winning record, but much like this year losses to unranked and less talented teams have killed them in the PW. Now they have to win the HE title (which Leaman has never done) or they once again are through. Are they on the downward trend? Perhaps, but a HE title would certainly quiet the naysayers.

According to Divver, looks like Austen May will be on the shelf for awhile with injury suffered related to hit from Nick's brother on the weekend.

Good luck getting the board Karen to have any other thought. He's not a quality poster like PK! It's a very unhealthy obsession he (?) has with Leaman.

I wonder if UMASS fans are clamoring for Carvel's head as they sit in next to the last place in HE right now, 2 years after winning the National Championship.

Zlax has been a negative nancy with whomever the coach is at PC....

True....but one win since Jan 1st with a group the head coach said "I really like this group and we should be going places in March" isn't good after a 3-2 loss to the second to last place team. After Friday, they have two losses to the 8th place team, one to ninth place UMass and one to 11th place New Hampshire since Jan. 1. Can they pull off the loss to 10th place Vermont too?

Carvel won with players he didn’t even recruit….his true colors showing now

Carvel and the Minutemen are going to be fine. Love the hot takes though, mildly amusing. You guys should call in to talk show radio.

And congratulations on the loss.

This isn't true at all...as 18 players in Carvel's second season were either sophomores or freshmen. There was a transfer from Providence that isn't included in that number.

A few bad streaks broken with yesterday's win at Vermont. Not that they played tremendous, but they got the win. Moynihan and Valente sat out, coach decision, Monds and Citarra were in. Ruikka out due to illness, the older Schimek in. So 2 brother combos played for the Friars yesterday. Younger Schimek with his 8th goal of the year. Englebert and Crozier (his on the PP to break an 0 for 21 streak) the other 2 goals. 5 game losing streak broken and 7 game streak giving up 3 or more goals broken. Bus ride home must have been better than the bus ride up.

It was good to get the win. I was a little concerned because after watching a couple of their recent games on ESPN+ Vermont has been playing pretty well lately. Thank goodness PC came back after another overturned early goal following an offsides challenge. Unfortunately ESPN+ did not have a replay so I couldn't see for myself what happened, but when the same thing happened Friday vs. U. Mass I thought the NESN+ replay was inconclusive. I believe overturning the original call is supposed to require conclusive evidence and since that review took so long you wonder how that could be conclusive enough to change the original onside decision and overturn a crucial goal. It must be a real challenge to get back up mentally in a game where goals are few and far between to begin with. Like 73 said, the bus ride home must have been a better one. Long way to go for a one game set.

Thought for a while that we had a new fan when Hockey Ref posted here. Was willing to trade a generally positive poster in exchange for our perpetual ExLax critic. I guess that trade didn't work out as the Hockey Ref posts have disappeared.

PC finally got some puck luck in this game, especially after what they experienced against UMass. Yes I too thought conclusive evidence was required; perhaps the refs saw angles we were not shown on the replays. I know from watching the games all season that PC has had at least 6 goals overturned for various reasons, and most of them were BS calls IMHO. Hopefully the Friars can build some momentum going into the HE playoffs, because they'll need everything they can get there too as well. A HE title is their only hope of getting into the NCAAs.

Oh I was so embarrassed that I had been posting on your thread the other night! I thought I had the UNH forum open....that said I was lurking on your thread...I was going to come over today to apologize! I deleted them...Good luck the rest of the way!!!

You're welcome to continue posting your unrelated-to-Friars-Hockey comments in this thread. It confused me at first if I clicked a wrong thread but was a welcome addition.

Going by your username, if you are indeed a hockey ref, hey, at least you could admit you got the call wrong unlike the gems of Hockey East!

Refs never admit wrong doing! That's 101 of officiating lol. Actually I am a retired field hockey/lacrosse official (high school/college) and started using this username years ago even before I got hooked into ice hockey. I am sure it raises a few eyebrows and then leads to disappointment when my profile is read lol. It took me awhile but I learned the 'rules' and I am very loud at UNH games when I believe they got it wrong :-)

Hopefully I won't wander again with that stuff it had to be 'what is going on here'...but I do enjoy reading the Providence board (the drama ya know-as if UNH doesn't have enough drama). Have always admired the Friars and its been awhile since I've been to Schneider. And of course beating them is also a thrill; still hanging onto the 2014/2015 HE wins but you guys have a banner and we...do not. Still I think we tend to match up well with them; better than most HE teams esp now.

Like I said, good luck going forward. I think its going to be interesting down the stretch...

Thanks for the positive vibes. I still think about the HE quarter final loss to UNH in 2015 as well. The third game overtime thriller was awesome, but I particularly remember the final OT play when Brett Pesce got the puck between the dots and instead of flicking off a wrister immediately he had the poise to take a few steps closer to Gilles to take an even better shot. That was the winner, (although I checked on-line and saw that the goal was credited to another player on a deflection). He was an awesome player and has developed into a high caliber NHL star.

Max Crozier did something similar to that for the insurance goal at the end of the UVM game this past Sunday. He had the composure to stick handle the puck around the defender then take a closer shot that appeared to go exactly where he was aiming. Keep looking for players to take that extra split second, that seems to define elite players.
